En prévision du passage de Cryptopsy au Théâtre Fairmount le 28 mai prochain dans le cadre du Decibel Magazine Tour 2026 présenté par Extensive Enterprise, Evans Brouillette de MetalUniverse.net s’est entretenu avec l’intense Matt McGachy. Réalisée quelques heures avant un concert à Berkeley, en Californie, cette entrevue aborde la tournée actuelle, les célébrations entourant le 30e anniversaire de None So Vile, le récent album An Insatiable Violence, ainsi que les projets futurs du groupe montréalais.

MU: Hey! Allô Matt! Tu me sembles détendu, comment se passe la tournée jusqu’à présent? As-tu des moments forts?
McGachy: Salut! Oh! C’est malade! On a du fun! Il y a deux jours, nous étions à LA (Los Angeles). Nous avions plus de 800 personnes et c’était insane! Juste avant, c’était à Austin, TX. Les gens étaient contents de nous voir. Ça me fait toujours chaud au coeur de voir les gens enjoués de nous voir jouer.
MU: À quoi devons-nous nous attendre, pour cette édition du Decibel Tour 2026?
McGachy: De l’extrême.
Blood Monolith, qui « est un supergroupe », c’est une chance de les avoir en première partie. Ils sont brutaux et réchauffent vraiment bien le terrain.
Malheureusement, nous avons su que Fulci ne pourra pas être présent (le classique visa). Ils sont remplacés par Spirit Adrift. Spirit Adrift est un groupe de doom/sludge/stoner. Le guitariste de Fulci est également dans ce band. Ils étaient contents de recevoir l’appel pour le remplacement. Ils allaient faire l’annonce de la fin du groupe dans 7 jours. Participer à cette tournée leur permet de s’adresser aux fans une dernière fois.
Necrot est un band de death metal, ils sont très bons et nous connaissons leurs capacités.
Pour Cryptopsy, nous sommes très enchantés d’être une tête d’affiche. Pour la première fois, nous avons des geysers, des écrans LCD et beaucoup d’éléments visuels. C’est le 30e anniversaire de None So Vile, un album important pour Cryptopsy, nous en sommes conscients et il est primordial de continuer de jouer des pistes de celui-ci. Nous allons jouer beaucoup de chansons de cet album, mais plusieurs de An Insatiable Violence aussi. Nous voulons que notre band ne soit pas seulement associé à None So Vile et Whisper Supremacy.
MU: Parlant de An Insatiable Violence, quelles en étaient les inspirations? L’album est plutôt différent de None So Vile.
McGachy: J’ai fait un rêve en août 2023. Un homme partait le matin travailler sur une machine toute la journée. Quand il arrivait la nuit, il se faisait torturer par cette machine. À chaque matin qu’il se réveillait, il repensait à sa nuit et se questionnait sur comment il pouvait augmenter le niveau de torture qu’il pourrait subir, de fois en fois. J’analyse ce rêve comme un combat entre l’homme et la machine. Dans notre société moderne, cette machine, ce sont les réseaux sociaux. Tout le monde est constamment sur son téléphone. Même en ce moment, je regarde autour de moi, je vois ce gars assis devant sa bière et son cellulaire, même chose pour ces deux femmes et cet autre gars. An Insatiable Violence est une observation de l’impact qu’ont les réseaux sociaux sur les interactions entre humains et comment ils prennent de la place. Nous voulons aussi montrer que Cryptopsy est plus que None So Vile.
MU: Parlons un peu de Blasphemy Made Fresh (un medley de Blasphemy Made Flesh de 1994). Qu’est-ce qui vous a poussés à penser à refaire cet album?
McGachy: J’écoutais un podcast avec un des membres d’In Flames, où il parlait de refaire The Jester Race en formule medley. C’est de là que provient l’idée de faire ça. C’est un medley que je suis content que nous ayons fait. Nous avons eu la chance d’avoir plusieurs invités, comme Billy Strings. Ce qui a été un choc pour moi, c’est de savoir que Strings est un énorme fan de Cryptopsy. Il demeure encore en contact avec nous, mais je ne peux rien dire de plus pour l’instant.
MU: Est-ce voulu de terminer la tournée avec Montréal? Qu’est-ce que vous ressentez quand vous y jouez? Y aura-t-il des éléments différents du reste des concerts?
McGachy: Nous ressentons toujours une pression quand nous jouons à Montréal. Nous savons que nos connaissances, amis et familles y seront. Ce sont les promoteurs qui ont décidé de finir la tournée là, puisque les headliners (nous) venons de ce coin. C’est pour nous avantager. Il n’y aura pas vraiment de différences dans ce concert. Mais, maintenant que tu me poses la question, ça serait bien d’avoir Lord Worm avec nous.
MU: L’avez-vous contacté?
McGachy: Non. Je viens d’y penser. Je vais en parler avec les autres, pour savoir ce qu’ils en pensent.
MU: Quels sont les projets pour Cryptopsy, après la tournée du Decibel Tour?
McGachy: Nous partons en tournée en Europe. Après, nous retournons en écriture et espérons sortir l’album en 2028.
MU: Merci énormément Matt, pour ton temps alloué. As-tu un mot de la fin ou des trucs à ajouter?
McGachy: Achetez vos billets maintenant. Il n’en reste pas beaucoup de disponibles pour le concert à Montréal. Nous avons très hâte de vous voir!
Le Decibel Tour 2026 se produira au Théâtre Fairmount le 28 mai 2026 avec Blood Monolith, Spirit Adrift (tournée d’adieu, en remplacement de Fulci), Necrot et Cryptopsy (pour le 30e anniversaire de None So Vile).

Ahead of Cryptopsy’s upcoming performance at the Théâtre Fairmount on May 28 as part of the Decibel Magazine Tour 2026 presented by Extensive Enterprise, Evans Brouillette of MetalUniverse.net spoke with the intense Matt McGachy. Conducted a few hours before a concert in Berkeley, California, this interview touches on the current tour, the celebration surrounding the 30th anniversary of None So Vile, the recent album An Insatiable Violence, as well as the band’s future plans.
MU: Hey! Hi Matt! You seem relaxed, how’s the tour going so far? Any highlights?
McGachy: Hey! Oh! It’s awesome! We’re having fun! Two days ago, we were in LA (Los Angeles). We had over 800 people and it was insane! Right before that, we were in Austin, TX. People were happy to see us. It always warms my heart to see people excited to watch us play.
MU: What should we expect from this edition of the Decibel Tour 2026?
McGachy: Extreme.
Blood Monolith, which “is a supergroup,” it’s a privilege to have them opening the shows. They’re brutal and they really warm up the crowd well.
Unfortunately, we found out that Fulci won’t be able to make it (the classic visa issue). They are being replaced by Spirit Adrift. Spirit Adrift is a doom/sludge/stoner band. The guitarist from Fulci is also in that band. They were happy to get the call for the replacement. They were supposed to announce the end of the band in 7 days. Taking part in this tour gives them the opportunity to address their fans one last time.
Necrot is a death metal band, they’re very good and we know what they’re capable of.
For Cryptopsy, we’re very excited to be headlining. For the first time, we have geysers, LCD screens and a lot of visual elements. It’s the 30th anniversary of None So Vile, an important album for Cryptopsy, we’re aware of that and it’s essential to keep playing songs from it. We’re going to play a lot of songs from that album, but also several from An Insatiable Violence. We want our band to be known for more than just None So Vile and Whisper Supremacy.
MU: Speaking of An Insatiable Violence, what were the inspirations behind it? The album is quite different from None So Vile.
McGachy: I had a dream in August 2023. A man would go to work every morning on a machine all day long. When he came home at night, he would get tortured by that machine. Every morning when he woke up, he would think back to the previous night and wonder how he could increase the level of torture he could endure, over and over again. I see this dream as a battle between man and machine. In modern society, that machine is social media. Everyone is constantly on their phone. Even right now, I’m looking around me, I see this guy sitting there with his beer and his cellphone, same thing with these two women and that other guy. An Insatiable Violence is an observation of the impact social media has on human interactions and how much space it takes up. We also want to show that Cryptopsy is more than None So Vile.
MU: Let’s talk a little about Blasphemy Made Fresh (a medley of 1994’s Blasphemy Made Flesh). What made you want to revisit that album?
McGachy: I was listening to a podcast with one of the members of In Flames, where he talked about redoing The Jester Race as a medley. That’s where the idea came from. It’s a medley that I’m really happy we did. We had the chance to feature several guests, like Billy Strings. What shocked me was finding out that Strings is a huge Cryptopsy fan. He’s still in contact with us, but I can’t say anything more for now.
MU: Was it intentional to end the tour in Montreal? What do you feel when you play there? Will there be any differences compared to the other shows?
McGachy: We always feel pressure when we play in Montreal. We know our friends, family and people we know will be there. The promoters decided to end the tour there because the headliners (us) come from that area. It’s meant to benefit us. There won’t really be major differences for that show. But now that you ask the question, it would be cool to have Lord Worm with us.
MU: Have you contacted him?
McGachy: No. I just thought about it. I’m going to talk to the others and see what they think about it.
MU: What are the plans for Cryptopsy after the Decibel Tour?
McGachy: We’re heading to Europe for a tour. After that, we’re going back to writing and hopefully releasing an album in 2028.
MU: Thank you so much Matt, for your time. Any final words or anything else you’d like to add?
McGachy: Buy your tickets now. There aren’t many left for the Montreal show. We can’t wait to see you!
The Decibel Tour 2026 will stop at the Théâtre Fairmount on May 28, 2026 with Blood Monolith, Spirit Adrift (farewell tour, replacing Fulci), Necrot and Cryptopsy (celebrating the 30th anniversary of None So Vile).
