Vendredi 18 juin, l’enfer commence….
La journée commence sous une chaleur qui commence à se faire sentir. Et pourtant, l’affiche de la journée se promet d’être exceptionnelle avec pour final Iron Maiden et Sabaton, deux groupes sacrés de la scène métal.
Commençons notre journée marathon par URAVENA, groupe polynésien de thrash groove métal. Mais quel groupe détonnant !! Des riffs de dingue, une énergie folle pour un résultat de folie, percutant et efficace. Hâte de les voir en fin de journée devant un plus large public.
Changement de Mainstage pour BLACKRAIN, groupe français de glam métal. Ne connaissant pas ce groupe, la découverte ne fut que plus belle. Vu la réaction du public déchaîné, ils ont totalement réussi leur venue au Hellfest. Digne représentation française de ce genre de métal. À découvrir également en fin de soirée.
Direction la Temple pour découvrir également le groupe français de black métal, MOURIR. Rien que le nom du groupe, il fallait s’attendre à un univers très sombre avec des riffs bien gras. Et bien en effet, les Toulousains ont un univers très sombre et violent dans leur musique. 30 minutes de folie pure pour une représentation juste.
De l’autre côté des nombreux hectares séparant la Temple pour aller à la Warzone sous cette chaleur, il fallait absolument aller à la rencontre des Français de WAKE THE DEAD. Mention très bien pour les Marseillais avec leur hardcore très bien mené pourvu de l’énergie folle de leur chanteuse. Pour le public, ce groupe est allé droit au but et a marqué le but de la victoire finale.
On repart de l’autre côté sur la Valley pour voir le groupe français, YAROSTAN. Ce coup-ci, les Marseillais ont eu un peu de mal à me convaincre à les écouter, je n’ai pas réussi à entrer dans leur monde musical. Pourtant, musicalement, c’est propre et bien joué avec un métal dense mais à revoir…
Et voici mon coup de cœur de la journée, voire un des plus gros coups de cœur du festival. Le groupe espagnol KILLUS a mis un coup de poing uppercut dont jamais on a réussi à se relever. Malgré ses 25 ans de carrière, la mise en scène est exceptionnelle, une musique avec de multiples influences. Un métal puissant qui a mis l’ensemble du public présent KO. Sur le podium du Hellfest 2026.
Après cette claque où il sera difficile de faire mieux aujourd’hui, direction une Mainstage pour voir les Suédois de BROTHERS OF METAL. Riffs léchés, puissance vocale des Vikings, la prestation reste convaincante sans rester dans les annales de la journée. À noter l’excellente prestation de la chanteuse avec une voix incroyable.
Continuons sur la Mainstage avec le groupe français SORTILÈGE. Les influences de Judas Priest se voient immédiatement. Juste après le décès d’un des leurs (Bruno Ramos), le groupe s’est bien relancé avec des albums très bien ficelés présentés ce vendredi. Le heavy métal à la française se porte bien.
Sur l’Altar, les Norvégiens de BLOOD RED THRONE arrivent sur scène avec leur death métal ultra brutal. Que dire de plus à part excellente prestation au point de péter les tympans et autre organe utile au métal. Une prestation de dingue qui laissera sur le cul les festivaliers présents pour cette prestation. Un vrai conseil, faites tout pour les voir dès que vous pouvez sur une plus grande scène.
Sur la Warzone, c’est le groupe parisien POINT MORT que je retrouve. Après une prestation remarquée en 2022 sur la plus petite scène Valley, j’attendais une prestation de folie sur cette scène. Grosse déception, j’ai rien ressenti, une prestation loupée pour moi. Fort dommage après avoir tant donné il y a 4 ans, j’espère les revoir et me faire changer d’avis tant cette prestation était fade.
Ohh que j’attendais les Allemands de ACCEPT. Des décennies à nous engloutir leur heavy métal riche en musicalité et paroles très fortes. Même si ce groupe ne fera pas encore de vieux os sur scène, le groupe ACCEPT a été accepté par l’ensemble du public du Hellfest 2026 sans équivoque.
Que dire de ces légendes brésiliennes de thrash métal, sûrement un de leurs derniers concerts. Et pourtant, SEPULTURA a encore été exceptionnel, dur, brutal avec la voix de Derreck Green à un niveau incroyable. Leur dernier album « The Cloud of Unknowing », d’un niveau incroyable, est à écouter sans modération. L’avoir entendu en partie sur scène était génial.
Incroyable, exceptionnel, ahurissant !! Les Allemands d’HELLOWEEN ont tout explosé au Hellfest. Malgré leurs 40 ans de carrière, l’œuvre musicale exposée au public fut d’un niveau inégalable depuis cette matinée. Que ce soit les envolées lyriques ou les riffs de dingue des zikos, les atouts présentés par ce groupe ainsi que le jeu de scène (merci les citrouilles sous forme de ballons) ont mis tout le monde d’accord pour cette fin de journée.
Alors même si les photos étaient interdites pour notre média, il était impossible de ne pas parler de la prestation XXL des Anglais d’Iron Maiden. Après plus de 50 ans de carrière, être à un tel niveau de haute voltige avec un Bruce Dickinson au sommet de sa forme vocale, on ne pouvait qu’assister à un concert de 2 h 15 à un niveau rarement égalé au Hellfest. Concentré sur leurs 9 premiers albums et l’album « Fear of the Dark », la tournée Run For Your Lives Tour restera comme une des plus belles tournées du groupe de heavy métal d’outre-Manche. Grâce à un français parfaitement maîtrisé, Bruce a bien lancé quelques messages bien pensés. Énergie débordante, show varié et hyper précis, Maiden a trouvé les aliments incontournables à un concert parfaitement réussi qui les mettra 1er ex æquo des concerts de ce Hellfest 2026.
Pour terminer cette soirée, le groupe SABATON se poste devant la scène. Les Suédois, reconnus mondialement dans le power métal. Après plus de 20 ans de carrière, Sabaton, qui accumule les récompenses, offre à ses très nombreux fans une approche artistique et scénique hors du commun. Je pensais voir un concert monstrueux, j’ai vu un concert monstrueux. Je pensais entendre une musique de dingue avec des riffs puissants, cela a surpassé mes espoirs. Seul hic pour ce groupe indépendamment de leur volonté, cette scène très très haute qui ne permettait pas de mettre totalement en valeur l’expression scénique du groupe.

Friday, June 18 – Hell Begins…
The day began under a heat that was already making itself felt. Yet the day’s lineup promised to be exceptional, with Iron Maiden and Sabaton, two legendary names of the metal scene, closing out the night.
Let’s begin our marathon day with URAVENA, a Polynesian thrash groove metal band. What an explosive group!! Insane riffs, incredible energy, and a crushingly effective performance. I can’t wait to see them later in the day in front of an even larger audience.
Next stop, the Mainstage for BLACKRAIN, a French glam metal band. Since I wasn’t familiar with them, the discovery was all the more enjoyable. Judging by the crowd’s wild reaction, they completely nailed their Hellfest appearance. A worthy French representative of this style of metal. Definitely worth catching again later that evening.
Then it was off to the Temple stage to discover another French band, black metallers MOURIR. Just from the band’s name, you could expect a very dark atmosphere with crushing riffs. And indeed, the Toulouse-based musicians delivered a dark and violent musical universe. Thirty minutes of pure madness for a truly solid performance.
Crossing the many hectares that separate the Temple from the Warzone under the blazing sun, I absolutely had to catch fellow French band WAKE THE DEAD. High marks for the Marseille hardcore outfit, whose performance was driven by the incredible energy of their vocalist. For the audience, they went straight for the goal and scored the winning point.
Back across to the Valley stage to see another French band, YAROSTAN. This time, however, the Marseille-based musicians had a harder time convincing me. I simply couldn’t immerse myself in their musical world. Musically, everything was clean and well played, with dense metal throughout, but it’s something I’ll have to revisit.
And here comes my favorite performance of the day, perhaps even one of my biggest highlights of the entire festival. Spanish band KILLUS landed an uppercut that I never recovered from. Despite celebrating 25 years as a band, their stage production is outstanding, and their music blends countless influences. Powerful metal that completely knocked out everyone in attendance. Easily on the podium of Hellfest 2026.
After that crushing performance, which would be difficult to top today, it was back to the Mainstage to see Swedish warriors BROTHERS OF METAL. Tight riffs, powerful Viking vocals, and an overall convincing performance, even if it won’t go down as one of the day’s absolute highlights. Special mention goes to the female vocalist, whose incredible voice truly stood out.
We stayed on the Mainstage for French heavy metal veterans SORTILÈGE. The influence of Judas Priest is immediately apparent. Following the passing of one of their own (Bruno Ramos), the band has successfully reinvented itself with a series of well-crafted albums, several of which were showcased this Friday. French heavy metal is alive and well.
Over at the Altar stage, Norwegian death metal masters BLOOD RED THRONE took over with their ultra-brutal assault. What more can be said other than an outstanding performance capable of blowing out your eardrums—and just about every other organ essential to metal. A truly insane set that left everyone in attendance completely stunned. One piece of advice: do everything you can to catch them on a bigger stage whenever the opportunity arises.
Back at the Warzone, I reunited with Parisian band POINT MORT. After a remarkable performance in 2022 on the smaller Valley stage, I had high expectations for this set. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a major disappointment. I simply felt nothing. A missed performance in my eyes. A real shame after what they delivered four years ago. I sincerely hope to see them again and have my opinion changed, because this performance felt flat.
Oh, how I had been waiting for Germany’s ACCEPT. Decades of delivering heavy metal filled with memorable melodies and powerful lyrics. Even if the band may not have many years left on stage, ACCEPT was unquestionably embraced by the entire Hellfest 2026 audience.
What can be said about these Brazilian thrash metal legends? This may well have been one of their final concerts. Yet SEPULTURA once again proved exceptional—raw, brutal, with Derreck Green delivering vocals at an astonishing level. Their latest album, The Cloud of Unknowing, is absolutely phenomenal and deserves repeated listening. Hearing part of it performed live was a real treat.
Incredible, exceptional, unbelievable!! Germany’s HELLOWEEN completely stole the show at Hellfest. Even after 40 years of existence, the musical performance they delivered was unmatched throughout the entire day. Whether it was the soaring vocals or the jaw-dropping riffs from the musicians, every aspect of the show—including the stage production (special thanks to the giant pumpkin balloons!)—won over the crowd and provided a spectacular end to the day.
Although photography was prohibited for our media outlet, it would have been impossible not to mention the XXL performance delivered by England’s Iron Maiden. After more than 50 years together, performing at such an extraordinary level—with Bruce Dickinson in phenomenal vocal form—resulted in a breathtaking 2-hour-and-15-minute concert unlike almost anything Hellfest has ever witnessed. Focusing on their first nine albums along with Fear of the Dark, the Run For Your Lives Tour will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the band’s finest tours. Thanks to his flawless French, Bruce delivered several thoughtful messages to the audience. Overflowing energy, a varied and incredibly precise show—Maiden found every ingredient needed for a perfect concert, earning a well-deserved tie for the best performance of Hellfest 2026.
To close out the evening, SABATON took the stage. The Swedish power metal giants, internationally renowned after more than 20 years of success, continue to accumulate accolades while offering their fans an artistic and theatrical experience unlike any other. I expected a monstrous concert—I got a monstrous concert. I expected incredible music with crushing riffs—it surpassed all my expectations. The only downside, beyond the band’s control, was the extremely high stage, which prevented the audience from fully appreciating the group’s stage performance.
