August Burns Red – Comment enflammer un stage sans les flammes
C’est le 12 mai dernier qu’August Burns Red foulait les planches, accompagné de Heavensgate, Boundaries et The Amity Affliction.
C’est Heavensgate qui ouvrait le bal avec une brutalité sans pareil. Les breakdowns étaient lourds et les fans plus que contents de pouvoir commencer cette soirée en force… et dans le pit. Les chansons s’enchaînaient aussi brutalement les unes que les autres; nous n’avions aucun répit. Ce n’était pas une surprise de voir des crowdsurfers dès cette première apparition : ils étaient attendus. Et que dire de leur présence sur scène? Leur connexion avec la musique et leur public est sans pareil. C’était toute une ouverture.
HEAVENSGATE
La suite était tout aussi féroce avec Boundaries, un autre groupe très attendu qui savait comment faire banger les têtes comme nul autre. Ils étaient lourds et la foule plus que réceptive. Personnellement, je ne connaissais pas le band et je n’ai pas été déçue. Ils étaient forts, bruyants et complètement assumés dans leur chaos. Une belle découverte pour moi.
BOUNDARIES
On a ensuite ralenti la cadence un peu avec l’arrivée de The Amity Affliction. Ce groupe à la vulnérabilité pure était là pour faire passer son cri du cœur, mais aussi pour nous faire découvrir certains morceaux de leur nouvel album, House Of Cards, l’un de leurs plus chaotiques selon moi. Encore et toujours partagé entre brutalité et émotion, le groupe attirait une foule bien à lui. C’est le genre de band qui amène un public extrêmement fidèle : tu aimes ou tu n’aimes pas. Moi, j’adore.
L’arrière-plan de la scène était composé d’un immense écran au milieu duquel se trouvait le drummer. Le groupe jouait avec ce décor en plaçant leur musicien au centre d’illusions d’optique et de décors aux couleurs bleutées rappelant parfaitement l’album Let The Ocean Take Me. En fait, les couleurs étaient toujours en parfaite harmonie avec l’album duquel provenait la chanson jouée; on assistait donc à un véritable voyage dans le temps. Il y avait également des effets visuels grâce à des lasers qui passaient au-dessus de la foule. Suis-je la seule à adorer ce genre d’effet? Je trouve ça complètement magique.
THE AMITY AFFLICTION
Finalement, August Burns Red arrivait avec force. En commençant leur set avec Meddler, on savait immédiatement que la fin de cette soirée s’annonçait complètement folle. Passant à travers de vieux classiques, le groupe s’aventurait également dans de nouveaux hits qui figureront sur leur nouvel album, Season Of Surrender. La chanson Nameless, sortie le mois dernier, a d’ailleurs frappé très fort : le public était réceptif et le décor à l’arrière, montrant le design de cet album à venir autour du drummer, était parfaitement agencé.
Marianas Trench était sans surprise l’un des classiques les plus attendus, permettant à la foule de complètement lâcher son fou. Et que dire du solo de Matt Greiner? Cet homme sait comment frapper avec une précision absurde tout en gardant un rythme complètement clair sans même avoir l’air d’y penser.
La fin, légendaire, était marquée par White Washed. Chaque fois que j’entends l’introduction de cette chanson, je sais que je vais me faire brasser. Elle me donne des frissons et me donne envie de lâcher toute ma colère.
C’était une soirée brutale, mais teintée d’une goutte d’émotion venue chercher plus d’une personne dans la foule.

August Burns Red – How to Set a Stage on Fire Without the Flames
On May 12, August Burns Red hit the stage alongside Heavensgate, Boundaries, and The Amity Affliction.
It was Heavensgate who kicked things off with unmatched brutality. The breakdowns were heavy, and the fans were more than ready to start the night strong… and in the pit. Song after song came crashing down with relentless intensity; there was absolutely no time to breathe. It came as no surprise to see crowdsurfers during this very first set: they were expected. And what can be said about their stage presence? Their connection with both the music and the crowd is truly something special. What an opening performance.
Things stayed just as fierce with Boundaries, another highly anticipated band that knew exactly how to get heads banging like no other. They were heavy, and the crowd was more than receptive. Personally, I wasn’t familiar with the band beforehand, and I definitely wasn’t disappointed. They were loud, aggressive, and fully embraced their chaos. A great discovery for me.
The pace slowed down slightly with the arrival of The Amity Affliction. This band, filled with raw vulnerability, came not only to deliver their emotional outcry but also to introduce some songs from their new album, House Of Cards, which is, in my opinion, one of their most chaotic releases yet. Constantly balancing brutality and emotion, the band attracts a very specific kind of audience. It’s the kind of band you either love or don’t connect with at all. Personally, I love them.
The stage backdrop featured a massive screen with the drummer positioned right in the middle. The band played with the visual setup by surrounding their musician with optical illusions and blue-toned scenery that perfectly echoed the atmosphere of the album Let The Ocean Take Me. In fact, the visuals were always perfectly aligned with the album each song came from, turning the entire performance into a true journey through time. There were also laser effects passing over the crowd. Am I the only one who absolutely loves that kind of effect? I find it completely magical.
Finally, August Burns Red arrived with full force. Opening their set with Meddler, it immediately became clear that the end of the night would be absolute chaos. Moving through old classics while also diving into newer songs that will appear on their upcoming album Season Of Surrender, the band kept the energy at an all-time high. The song Nameless, released just last month, hit especially hard: the crowd reacted instantly, and the backdrop displaying the artwork for the upcoming album around the drummer was perfectly arranged.
Marianas Trench was, unsurprisingly, one of the most anticipated classics of the night, giving the crowd the perfect excuse to completely lose their minds. And what can be said about the solo from Matt Greiner? That man knows exactly how to hit with absurd precision while maintaining a perfectly clear rhythm without even looking like he’s trying.
The legendary ending came with White Washed. Every single time I hear the intro to that song, I know I’m about to get completely wrecked. It gives me chills and makes me want to let out every ounce of anger inside me.
It was a brutal night, but one touched by a layer of emotion that reached more than a few people in the crowd.
