Samedi 19 juin, au bout de l’effort…

La journée commence avec une fatigue bien présente et une chaleur qui augmente et montera au fil de la journée. Heureusement que la setlist du jour donne envie, enfin j’espère…

Commençons par LOCOMUERTE. Ces Parisiens aux influences bien prononcées comme Anthrax ou Suicidal Tendencies ont démontré qu’avec un air latino mélangé à du hard rock bien sympa, on peut obtenir un mix incroyable qui a mis le feu à la fosse Mainstage déjà bien remplie. Avec 3 albums, ils savent déjà donner un spectacle dingue. Vivement la sortie d’un nouvel album qui sera, de notre côté, scrupuleusement scruté.

VIGLJOS, hommes en blanc empaillés, peuvent étonner aux premiers abords. Mais musicalement, c’est du très haut de gamme, une vraie claque auditive. Passant du synthé aux guitares brutales du black metal, le groupe français de 3 ans d’âge n’a pas fini de faire parler de lui sur la scène hard rock.

SLAY SQUAD, groupe totalement dingue mélangeant rap et hard rock, a su totalement prendre toute la scène, et vraiment toute à son avantage. Hyper sympa à suivre et à revoir.

On continue avec le groupe DVRK pour lequel je n’ai pas totalement accroché à sa musique, mais surtout à ses paroles, très sombres, voire déprimantes. Même si le potentiel artistique est bien présent musicalement, c’est vraiment dans la composition que je pense que l’effort doit être fait. À revoir prochainement sur scène.

Du côté de l’Altar, il fallait être attiré par le doux bruit gras et sombre du groupe PROFANATION. Déjà attiré par celui-ci sur le papier, il fallait absolument aller l’écouter, comme une attirance évidente. 5 albums et ce groupe de death metal a tout simplement retourné la salle et les quelques photographes présents tant on frôle la perfection artistique.
D’un style varié, puissant avec des paroles graves, le style agressif et rapide de ce groupe a mis une claque à ce style musical qui me dit et redemande à les revoir le plus vite possible sur une scène. Prestation totalement réussie.

À la Valley, le groupe BRUIT< porte terriblement son nom. Peut-être trop porté par un hard rock dur, ce groupe, en effet, ne fait que du bruit. Je ne comprends pas et ne suis pas du tout attiré par leur concept musical qui, certes, a le mérite d’exister, mais ils ont eu surtout le mérite d’avoir été le groupe où j’ai passé le moins de temps à regarder.

Le groupe HULDER, porté en lead par une femme, a de quoi attirer le regard musical. Après 2 albums à son actif, cette femme a porté haut le black metal pourtant dominé par les hommes barbus et tatoués. Très mélancolique mais sensuelle, la musique de Hulder nous attire inlassablement au point de rester l’écouter un peu plus que les autres artistes précédents.

Parti pour le groupe KING 810 avec David Gunn à sa main et sa voix hypnotique. Même si j’ai plutôt apprécié leur prestation, ce concert m’a décontenancé, voire laissé sans voix. Des styles musicaux très différents, sans une ligne musicale directrice définie. Je ne savais pas où ils voulaient nous emmener. Malgré tout, leur musique s’écoute avec envie et une vraie volonté de découvrir en profondeur ce groupe.

Ahhh ce temple, je l’attendais ce groupe NON EST DEUS, rien qu’en montant sur scène a évoqué de l’envie. Scénographie totalement réussie, j’attendais la prestation musicale. Examen réussi haut la main avec mention très bien. Entre blasphème démoniaque et messages portés sur les problèmes mondiaux, leur hymne au black metal a mis une baffe sans retour à l’ensemble du public présent. Alors s’il n’y a pas de dieu comme ils le prétendent, les dieux du metal étaient présents.

Parti pour GATECREEPER, où ce groupe n’y va pas par demi-mesure, c’est rentrer dans le lard et écoutez-moi ça. Alors les puristes vont dire que c’est du déjà-vu et entendu, mais c’est tellement exécuté à la perfection qu’on en redemande. Bravo pour cette prestation très réussie.

Les Belges de PSYCHONAUT se présentent à nous comme un ovni du metal progressif. Pas franchement emballé mais une prestation plutôt sympa à voir, le trio belge restera pour moi comme un concert passé parmi tant d’autres sans m’avoir laissé sans voix. Merci pour votre venue malgré tout.

Parti pour un groupe en Mainstage qui m’a été fortement conseillé, ENHANCER. Malgré l’invité de marque, Joey Starr, qui a su mettre le feu pendant les titres interprétés ensemble, je dénonce très fortement le manque de respect total du groupe envers notre travail après des heures d’attente. Resté en fond de scène sur la chanson que nous pouvions photographier, en cercle autour de la batterie, j’aurais préféré aller voir autre chose que de perdre mon temps à prendre des artistes de dos sans respect. Merci pour votre invité malgré tout.

CANCER BATS, un hardcore canadien avec des riffs puissants et une basse ultra présente. Énorme présence scénique maîtrisée, ces 5 loufoques ont réalisé une prestation remarquée et remarquable. Une présence en Mainstage pourrait être envisageable sur les futures éditions. Fort de leurs 8 albums studio, je suis persuadé qu’on entendra parler de ce groupe plus souvent.

1914… guerre, Ukraine, le metal nationaliste ne pouvait pas en être autrement. Metal très dur, drapeau porté très haut, les Ukrainiens se sont montrés très dignes de leur musique mais surtout du message passé. Vivement les revoir sur une plus grande scène, une adoration incontestable.

CRISIX en Mainstage, que dire de mieux !! Ce groupe de thrash metal espagnol né en 2008 a montré un metal dangereux et fantastique. Déjà présent en 2022 sur une Mainstage (avec un batteur malade), ils avaient déjà impressionné le public au point d’obtenir le graal de revenir sur une Mainstage. Des rythmes rapides mais percutants sonnant, voire détruisant nos oreilles, on dénonce juste leurs années de silence pour les encourager à vite revenir avec un nouveau projet.

Des légendes… The Big Four… ANTHRAX, groupe légendaire de hard rock sur scène, nous ne pouvions pas rêver mieux. Arrivé sur « Among the Living », le groupe a fait une prestation de folie mais, comme d’habitude, on n’est jamais déçu avec Anthrax. Spectacle garanti et ambiance musicale au point que le public a répondu sur le dernier titre à une war dance bien méritée. À revoir et revoir autant que possible.

Place au groupe tant attendu par le public, A PERFECT CIRCLE. Nous étions interdits de photos et tant mieux !!! Sieste garantie, aucun respect du chanteur qui reste en fond de scène (il paraît qu’on a déjà de la chance). Si déjà la musique était bonne, mais même pas, c’est d’un ennui à mourir. Seul problème, cela a duré bien trop longtemps.

Une légende en retraite annoncée, une légende qui montre la souffrance physique d’une main qui fait mal, une voix qui a du mal mais une légende sur scène, on la respecte. Dave Mustaine et son groupe iconique MEGADETH ont certes donné un spectacle à la mesure de ce qui est dit juste avant, mais quel bonheur incroyable de les avoir vus sûrement une dernière fois sur la scène principale du Hellfest. Mémorable et surtout, une véritable séquence émotion.

ENGLISH version

Saturday, June 19 – At the End of the Effort…

The day begins with a very noticeable fatigue and a heat that keeps rising as the hours go by. Fortunately, the day’s setlist is something to look forward to… or at least, I hope so.

Let’s start with LOCOMUERTE. These Parisians, clearly influenced by bands such as Anthrax and Suicidal Tendencies, proved that blending a Latin vibe with solid hard rock can create an incredible mix that set the already packed Mainstage pit on fire. With only three albums under their belt, they already know how to deliver a crazy live show. I can’t wait for their next album, which we’ll definitely be keeping a close eye on.

VIGLJOS, dressed in white and covered in straw, may seem surprising at first glance. Musically, however, it’s top-tier quality, a real sonic slap in the face. Moving from synthesizers to brutal black metal guitars, this three-year-old French band hasn’t finished making a name for itself on the hard rock scene.

SLAY SQUAD, a completely insane band blending rap and hard rock, totally owned the stage from beginning to end. A highly entertaining performance that I’d gladly watch again.

Next came DVRK, a band whose music I didn’t completely connect with, but especially their lyrics, which were extremely dark, even depressing. While the musical potential is definitely there, I think the songwriting still needs work. Worth seeing again in the future.

Over at the Altar stage, I couldn’t resist the thick, dark sound of PROFANATION. They had already caught my attention on paper, and I absolutely had to see them live. With five albums to their name, this death metal band completely tore the venue apart and even impressed the photographers in attendance. They came incredibly close to artistic perfection.

Their varied yet powerful style, combined with dark lyrical themes, delivers aggressive, fast-paced death metal that completely won me over. I can’t wait to see them on stage again. A flawless performance.

At the Valley stage, BRUIT< certainly lives up to its name. Maybe it’s simply too focused on harsh hard rock, but to me, it was nothing but noise. I just couldn’t connect with their musical concept. It certainly deserves to exist, but it ended up being the band I spent the least amount of time watching.

HULDER, fronted by a woman, immediately grabs your attention. With two albums already released, she proudly carries the black metal banner in a genre often dominated by tattooed, bearded men. Melancholic yet sensual, Hulder‘s music pulled me in enough to stay longer than I had planned.

Then came KING 810, led by David Gunn and his hypnotic voice. Although I generally enjoyed the performance, I was left somewhat confused. The band constantly shifted between very different musical styles without any clear direction. I wasn’t sure where they wanted to take us. Still, their music definitely makes me want to explore them further.

Ahhh… this was one of the bands I had been waiting for: NON EST DEUS. Just seeing them walk on stage was enough to build excitement. Their stage production was outstanding, and thankfully, the music fully lived up to it. They passed the test with flying colors. Between blasphemous imagery and songs addressing global issues, their black metal assault absolutely crushed the audience. If, as they claim, there is no god, then the gods of metal were definitely present that evening.

Next up was GATECREEPER, a band that doesn’t hold back for a single second. They come out swinging from start to finish. Purists may call it familiar territory, but everything is executed so perfectly that you simply want more. An excellent performance.

The Belgian trio PSYCHONAUT appeared as a true progressive metal UFO. I wasn’t completely blown away, but it was still an enjoyable show. In the end, it remained a good concert among many others without leaving a lasting impression. Still, thanks for coming.

Then it was time for ENHANCER, a Mainstage act that had been highly recommended to me. Despite the appearance of special guest Joey Starr, who set the crowd on fire during the songs they performed together, I have to criticize the band’s complete lack of respect toward photographers. After hours of waiting, they spent the entire song we were allowed to photograph standing in a circle around the drummer at the back of the stage. Honestly, I would have preferred seeing another band instead of wasting my time photographing musicians from behind. Thanks for bringing Joey Starr, though.

CANCER BATS delivered Canadian hardcore packed with powerful riffs and a thunderous bass sound. Their commanding stage presence made a huge impact, and these five wild musicians delivered a memorable performance. A future Mainstage appearance would certainly be deserved. With eight studio albums already behind them, I’m convinced we’ll be hearing much more from this band.

1914… war, Ukraine, nationalist metal—it couldn’t really be anything else. Their music is extremely heavy, their flag proudly raised, and the Ukrainian musicians remained true not only to their sound but also to the message they carried. I can’t wait to see them again on a bigger stage. An undeniable favorite.

CRISIX on the Mainstage… what more can I say? This Spanish thrash metal band, formed in 2008, unleashed dangerous and fantastic metal. Already present on a Mainstage in 2022 (despite having a sick drummer), they had impressed audiences enough to earn another invitation. Their fast, crushing rhythms practically destroyed our ears in the best possible way. The only complaint? They’ve been quiet for too long. Hopefully a new project is coming soon.

Legends… The Big Four… ANTHRAX. We couldn’t have asked for more. Opening with « Among the Living, » the legendary band delivered yet another incredible performance. As always, Anthrax never disappoints. The atmosphere was electric, and the audience fully embraced the final song with a well-deserved war dance. I’ll gladly see them again and again.

Then came the much-anticipated A PERFECT CIRCLE. Photography was prohibited—and honestly, that was probably for the best. Sleep guaranteed. The singer spent the show standing at the back of the stage (apparently we’re lucky he even came out). If only the music had compensated for it—but it didn’t. It was painfully boring, and unfortunately, it lasted far too long.

Finally, a legend approaching retirement. A legend visibly struggling with an injured hand and a voice that no longer has the same strength, but still a legend deserving of nothing but respect. Dave Mustaine and his iconic band MEGADETH certainly delivered exactly what one would expect under those circumstances. It was an incredible privilege to see them, likely for the final time, on the Hellfest Mainstage. A memorable performance and, above all, a deeply emotional moment.
