Encore une superbe édition signée Decibel Magazine. Au menu de cette dernière soirée de tournée : métal extrême, convivialité et émotions étaient au rendez-vous. Plusieurs éléments marquants pour les artistes présents, je vous en parle.

Directement Blood Monolith. Abrupte comme approche, vous me direz. Mais c’est exactement ce qui s’est passé. Ouvrez vos oreilles, car notre métal est là pour vous mettre dans l’agressivité de la suite. Aucune salutation, ils vont directement dans l’efficacité. Je fus étonné de l’efficacité de la drummeuse, Nadia Tydings-Lynch. Je n’étais pas prêt à son rythme exact et sa vigueur. Je vous le dis, une batterie qui n’est pas sur le temps, ça change tout. Mais ce n’était pas le cas. Deuxième chanson, déjà le premier mosh pit (ouf que demain ne m’aimera pas, je m’en viens vieux). Ce n’est qu’à la 3e chanson qu’on s’adresse à la foule. Première fois à Montréal et ils veulent décaper les planchers. Ils savent vraiment comment ouvrir un concert.

Fin du set : ah non. Je suis déjà mort. Trois autres groupes qui viennent. On sort rapidement dehors et on rentre!

BLOOD MONOLITH

Malheureusement, Fulci ne pouvait être présent, faute de visa. Ils furent remplacés par Spirit Adrift. Incroyable surprise, car avant d’avoir la demande pour le Decibel Tour, ils annonçaient leur fin, sept jours plus tard. Ceci était donc, par intérim, leur tournée d’adieu. Après une chanson, nous comprenons pourquoi. Le chanteur-guitariste texan nous explique qu’il a quitté son foyer pour la tournée alors que sa femme est atteinte d’un cancer. Dès son annonce, nous pouvions entendre la foule scander « Fuck cancer! » à répétition. Un moment émouvant où l’artiste a su garder son sang-froid. Malgré le style hétéroclite du band, avec le reste des groupes invités, ils suscitèrent l’intérêt et l’énergie du public. Oh! Malgré tout, on nous annonce un nouvel album. Restez à l’affût!

SPIRIT ADRIFT

Vient le tour de Necrot. Vous ne connaissez pas le band de death extrême de Californie? Eh bien, eux, ils semblent vous connaître. Précision et violence musicale sans pitié sont au rendez-vous. Ouf! Je n’étais pas prêt à cette brutalité. La foule en feu, les pits qui s’enchaînent. Ils ont livré un set comme nous l’espérions : plein d’agressivité, vigoureux et totalement dément. Le four est plus que chaud, c’est le temps d’y enfourner le mets principal.

NECROT

For Whom the Bell Tolls de Metallica accueille graduellement les musiciens, en finissant avec le chanteur (Matt McGachy, allez voir notre entrevue sur MU). Retour au bercail! Cryptopsy termine la tournée du Decibel Tour à la maison. La foule est déjà plus que prête, le band la salue amicalement avec de grands sourires. On s’adresse à nous cordialement… Si vous êtes familier avec la chanson Phobophile, vous savez que le calme est toujours présent avant la tempête. Non, ils n’ont pas ouvert avec cette piste. Mais! C’était le 30e anniversaire de None So Vile (1996). Pour la troisième chanson, God’s Replacement nous est indiquée comme une nouvelle composition. L’ambiance déjà électrisante, ils enchaînèrent succès après succès. Je vous laisse imaginer l’aspect de l’auditoire. Nous étions tous suintants et fringants aux sons de None So Vile et de certaines chansons issues de An Insatiable Violence. Accentués par les écrans de chaque côté de la scène, chaque morceau était un moment mémorable.

Une édition qui restera marquée dans le cœur des adeptes métalliques. Une ode au death metal extrême que chaque metalhead devrait vivre, au moins une fois dans sa vie. À suivre la tendance, je vous conseille de ne pas manquer les prochaines éditions du Decibel Tour. On se revoit dans le pit!

ENGLISH version

Another outstanding edition brought to us by Decibel Magazine. On the menu for this final night of the tour: extreme metal, camaraderie, and emotion were all present. There were several memorable moments involving the artists on the bill, and I’m about to tell you all about them.

Straight into Blood Monolith. An abrupt approach, you might say. But that’s exactly what happened. Open your ears, because their brand of metal is here to throw you headfirst into the aggression that follows. No greetings, no introductions, just straight to business. I was amazed by drummer Nadia Tydings-Lynch. I wasn’t prepared for her precision and intensity. Let me tell you, when a drummer isn’t locked into the beat, it changes everything. That definitely wasn’t the case here. By the second song, the first mosh pit had already erupted (oof, tomorrow is not going to be kind to me, I’m getting old). It wasn’t until the third song that they addressed the crowd. First time in Montreal, and they wanted to strip the floors clean. They certainly know how to open a concert.

End of the set: oh no. I’m already exhausted. Three more bands to go. A quick trip outside and then back in we go!

Unfortunately, Fulci couldn’t make it due to visa issues. They were replaced by Spirit Adrift. An incredible surprise because, before being asked to join the Decibel Tour, they had announced their breakup just seven days earlier. This essentially became their farewell tour, at least for the time being. After the first song, we understood why. The Texas-based singer and guitarist explained that he had left home for the tour while his wife was battling cancer. As soon as he shared the news, the crowd began chanting « Fuck cancer! » repeatedly. It was an emotional moment, and the musician handled it with remarkable composure. Despite their stylistic differences compared to the rest of the lineup, they captured the audience’s attention and energy. Oh, and despite everything, they announced a new album. Stay tuned!

Then it was time for Necrot. Never heard of this Californian extreme death metal band? Well, they seem to know you. Precision and merciless musical violence were on full display. Oof! I wasn’t ready for that level of brutality. The crowd was on fire, with pits opening up one after another. They delivered exactly the kind of set we hoped for: aggressive, powerful, and completely insane. The oven was more than hot enough. Time to serve the main course.

For Whom the Bell Tolls by Metallica gradually welcomed the musicians to the stage, ending with vocalist Matt McGachy (go check out our interview on MU). Homecoming time! Cryptopsy was closing out the Decibel Tour on home soil. The crowd was more than ready, and the band greeted everyone warmly with huge smiles. They addressed us cordially… If you’re familiar with the song Phobophile, you know that calm always comes before the storm. No, they didn’t open with that one. But! It was the 30th anniversary of None So Vile (1996). For the third song, God’s Replacement was introduced as a new composition. With the atmosphere already electrifying, they rolled through hit after hit. I’ll let you imagine what the audience looked like. We were all drenched in sweat and loving every second of it as we were treated to songs from None So Vile and selections from An Insatiable Violence. Enhanced by the screens on either side of the stage, every song felt like a memorable moment.

This edition will remain etched in the hearts of metal fans. A celebration of extreme death metal that every metalhead should experience at least once in their life. If the trend continues, I strongly recommend not missing future editions of the Decibel Tour. See you in the pit!
