Pour la deuxième fois cette année, Québec a reçu la visite de The Damn Truth, mais sans première partie. Un show avec un seul groupe, c’est rare. Et c’est bien apprécié, l’équivalent d’un show privé, comme dans notre salon s’il y a peu de monde.
The Damn Truth c’est du rock classique mâtiné de blues des années 1970, qu’on appelle aujourd’hui du « revival rock », mais ça revient au même. Autre époque mais même look, mêmes riffs bruts, même feeling, même aura, bref. Lee-la à la voix et la guitare nous charme avec son sourire et sa voix rauque et puissante rappelant immanquablement celle de Janis, Tom aux guitares nous offre des solos époustouflants, jouant parfois les yeux fermés, PY à la basse, l’air cool et impassible derrière son toupet, et Dave à la batterie, faisant vibrer le tempo de la soirée sans trop sembler se fatiguer. L’interaction avec la foule est amicale et plaisante : on répond en chantant ou en tapant des mains, on libère notre stress en criant à la demande de PY, on danse autour de Tom et Lee-la qui viennent chacun faire un tour sur le parterre.
Le son est maîtrisé, les éclairages très colorés suivent le rythme de la musique, la scène vibre sous les bottes à bout pointu. Moment fort lorsque Lee-la nous présente « If I Don’t Make it Home » et nous parle du départ de son papa il y a tout juste trois semaines, de qui c’était la chanson préférée. J’ai versé une larme à ce moment, et j’ai des frissons juste à l’écrire. La soirée a semblé courte et longue à la fois, on a été transportés par l’esprit, la présence, la complicité, et la prestation électrique de la formation. The Damn Truth c’est un ensemble harmonieux d’inspiration et d’authenticité. Le groupe à voir et à écouter pour vivre ses émotions à fond.

For the second time this year, Québec City welcomed The Damn Truth, but this time without an opening act. A rare happening. And it’s much appreciated—it’s like a private show, as if we were in our own living room with just a small crowd.
The Damn Truth is a 1970s blues-inspired classic rock band —what we call “revival rock” these days, but it’s all the same. A different era but the same look, the same raw riffs, the same vibe, the same aura. Lee-la on vocals and guitar is charming with her smile and her husky, powerful voice, inevitably bringing Janis to mind; Tom on guitar is treating us to breathtaking solos, sometimes playing with his eyes closed; PY on bass, looking cool and unbothered behind his hair; and Dave on drums, driving the night’s tempo without seeming to tire much. The interaction with the crowd is friendly and enjoyable: we respond by singing along or clapping hands, we release stress by screaming at PY’s request, and we dance around Tom and Lee-la as they each come down to the floor. The sound is spot-on, the colorful lights follow the rhythm of the music, and the stage vibrates under the pointed-toe boots. There’s a touching moment when Lee-la introduces “If I Don’t Make It Home” and tells us about her dad’s passing just three weeks ago—it was his favorite song. I shed a tear at that moment, and I get chills just writing about it. The evening felt both short and long at the same time; we were swept away by the band’s spirit, presence, and electrifying performance. The Damn Truth is a package: harmony, inspiration and authenticity. They are a must-see and must-hear band for feeling our emotions to the fullest.
