Ça faisait un bout que j’étais sortie à L’Anti pour un show. Et comme d’habitude, ça m’a fait du bien d’y revenir. La musique, surtout partagée, est vraiment une thérapie. Ce soir, je me déplace pour quatre groupes aux styles particuliers et pas si semblables, mais qui vont quand même bien ensemble. Bref retour sur la soirée.
Greylotus est le premier groupe au programme, lui qui se trouvait au festival Progstorm peut de jours auparavant, à Montréal, avec Exist et Anciients, justement. J’aime les festivals, mais j’aime aussi avoir la chance de voir des groupes dans un autre cadre. On dirait que la proximité me permet de mieux les apprécier. D’emblée, je pense que comme moi, les spectacteurs n’étaient pas prêts pour Greylotus, je pense qu’ils sont surpris, car ils ne sont ni enthousiastes, ni désintéressés, ils sont plutôt attentifs. J’essaie de définir le style du groupe, mais je n’y arrive pas – les influences, les sonorités proviennent de toutes parts.C’est limite décousu, mais ça fait aussi penser à un patchwork musical. Et, comme si c’était dan l’ordre des choses, la pièce « Permission to Exist » fait figure d’introduction à ce qui suivra.
GREYLOTUS
C’est-à-dire le groupe Exist, de Baltimore (que j’ai eu l’occasion de voir en 2019 (sept ans déjà!), dont j’ai gardé un souvenir plutôt flou. La formation vient de sortir un tout petit EP de trois pièces, « Beyond Purpose ». Je dois être honnête, juste au moment où je commencais à apprécier leur death metal progressif, Exist devra malheureusement couper court à sa prestation, faute de temps.
EXIST
L’entité nommée Unreqvited est la troisième à occuper l’espace et le temps. Une musique surtout instrumentale, atmosphérique, à la limite transcendentale, avec des cris d’âme perdue ici et là. Les pièces sont longues, mais en fait c’est qu’elles s’enchaînent de façon conceptuelle. C’est introspectif et contemplatif; un fan a déjà dit de leur musique, d’ailleurs, que c’était « froid et réconfortant ». Ça me plaît. Pour les intéressés, si vous êtes dans le coin (!), Unreqvited sera en Asie (surtout en Chine) en septembre.

Enfin, quatrième et dernier groupe au programme, Anciients. C’est fascinant de voir à quel point ils sont dans leur bulle – et leurs cheveux –, à projeter un mur de son quasi palpable, sans trop nous donner le temps de respirer. Je suis soufflée par un heavy metal en bonne et due forme, avec des touches de prog, interprété par des (presque) vétérans du genre. Anciients et compagnie m’ont rappelé que je suis privilégiée de pouvoir découvrir ces groupes sur scène, qu’ils soient nouveaux ou pas, et que j’aime vraiment élargir mes horizons musicaux.

It’s been a while since went out to L’Anti for a gig. And as usual, it feels good to be back there. Music, especially when shared with others, really is therapeutic. Tonight, I’m heading out to see four bands with distinctive styles that aren’t all that similar, but which still go well together. Here’s a quick recap of the evening.
Greylotus are the first band on the lineup; they were at the Progstorm festival just a few days earlier in Montreal, alongside Exist and Anciients. I love fests, but I also love having the chance to see bands in a different setting. It feels as though being up close allows me to appreciate them more. Right from the start, I have to say that, like me, the audience was not quite ready for Greylotus; I think they’re taken by surprise, because they’re neither enthusiastic nor disinterested – they’re actually quite attentive. I try to define the band’s genre, but I can’t quite pin it down – the influences and sounds come from all over the place. It’s almost disjointed, but it also brings to mind a musical patchwork. And, as if it were meant to be, the track ‘Permission to Exist’ serves as an introduction to what’s to follow.
Which is, the band Exist, also from Baltimore, which I had the chance to see in 2019 – seven years ago already! – though my memory of the gig is rather vague. The band have just released a very short three-track EP, ‘Beyond Purpose’. I have to be honest, just as I was starting to get into their progressive death metal, Exist unfortunately had to cut their set short due to time constraints.
The entity known as Unreqvited is the third to occupy space and time. Their music is predominantly instrumental and atmospheric, verging on transcendental, with the occasional cries of a lost soul. The songs are long, but this is actually because they flow into one another in a conceptual manner. It’s introspective and contemplative; one fan has, in fact, described their music as ‘cold yet comforting’. I like that. For those interested, if you’re in the area (!), Unreqvited will be touring in Asia (mainly China) in September.
Finally, the fourth and last band on the lineup: Anciients. It’s fascinating to see just how much they’re in their own world—and their own hair—as they unleash a wall of sound that’s almost tangible, without giving us much time to catch our breath. I’m blown away by this true to form heavy metal, with hints of prog, performed by (almost) veterans of the genre. In conclusion, Anciients and their tour companions reminded me that I’m privileged to be able to discover these bands live, whether they’re new or not, and that I really enjoy broadening my musical horizons.
