Au cours des derniers jours, notre journaliste Marc Desgagné, MetalUniverse.net, a réalisé une entrevue avec le guitariste-fondateur Olaf Thörsen à propos de la sortie du neuvième album de la formation power metal progressif italienne VISION DIVINE. Intitulé Blood and Angels’ Tears, le disque contient 12 titres. Il s’agit du deuxième album avec le chanteur Ivan Giannini et du premier avec le batteur Matt Peruzzi. À l’origine, VISION DIVINE était le projet solo de Olaf Thörsen (Labÿrinth), puis il a évolué sous la forme actuelle. Nous discutons du nouvel album, de sa carrière et la longue histoire de Vision Divine. L’album Blood and Angels’ Tears est disponible via Scarlet Records depuis le 20 septembre 2024.

MU : Félicitations pour la sortie de votre 9e album, « Blood and Angels’ Tears » ! Pouvez-vous nous parler du concept derrière cet album et comment il s’intègre dans la saga épique que vous avez créée ?
Vision Divine : Merci ! BAAT est un concept basé sur un livre que j’ai écrit avant de commencer l’album. Pendant la guerre entre l’Archange Michel et Lucifer, trois anges n’ont pas pu choisir leur camp. En punition, ils ont été exilés sur une Terre ancienne, éloignée de toute civilisation. Rongés par la culpabilité, ils ont décidé de se séparer, jurant de ne plus jamais se revoir. Arhemann est allé à l’ouest, Kah-Kl-Han à l’extrême orient, et Asar, le protagoniste principal, est resté dans les terres centrales. Des millénaires ont passé, et les anges ont accordé l’immortalité à quelques humains pour avoir de la compagnie. Cependant, des événements mystérieux ont commencé à faire disparaître ces humains immortels. Réalisant le danger croissant, Asar a rompu l’ancien serment pour retrouver ses frères et affronter la menace, qui s’est révélée être Baal, l’un des princes les plus puissants de Lucifer, envoyé pour conquérir la Terre. L’histoire se termine avec la réunion des trois personnages, face à un choix crucial une fois de plus. La conclusion sera dévoilée dans le prochain album, prévu pour 2025.
MU : C’est le deuxième album avec Ivan Giannini au chant et le premier avec Matt Peruzzi à la batterie. Comment ces changements de formation ont-ils influencé la dynamique du groupe et le processus d’enregistrement de « Blood and Angels’ Tears » ?
Vision Divine : Tout s’est déroulé très facilement, et il n’y a pas eu besoin de changer quoi que ce soit dans la dynamique du groupe. Nous avons passé les 5 dernières années à jouer beaucoup avec Ivan, et Mattia est aussi un ami de longue date, donc tout était très clair dès le début de l’écriture des chansons.
MU : L’album raconte l’histoire de trois anges bannis du Ciel après une guerre cataclysmique. Qu’est-ce qui vous a inspiré à explorer ce thème particulier ?
Vision Divine : Je lisais L’Enfer de Dante, et je me suis arrêté sur le passage que nous utilisons également comme narration pour la dernière chanson de cet album. Il parle des « Ignavi », un mot italien qui décrit les gens indifférents, ceux qui n’ont jamais pu faire de choix dans leur vie. Il mentionne aussi certains anges, et je me suis dit : tous ces anges, avant cette guerre cataclysmique, étaient censés être des frères ; comment ont-ils tous pu prendre parti si facilement ? Et si certains n’y arrivaient pas aussi facilement ? Que se serait-il passé ? C’est ainsi que j’ai commencé à réfléchir à une histoire et j’ai ensuite écrit un livre à ce sujet.
MU : Vous avez mentionné que chaque album est comme un chapitre dans un grand film. Avez-vous déjà pensé à adapter cette histoire en un projet visuel, comme un court-métrage ou autre ?
Vision Divine : Nous n’avons tout simplement pas le budget, les contacts, ni les outils pour le réaliser, malheureusement, mais je pense que cela pourrait fonctionner. Pour l’instant, j’ai écrit un livre à ce sujet, et qui sait… peut-être un jour !
MU : Les thèmes de la rédemption, de l’unité et de la résilience semblent être au cœur de cet album. Comment avez-vous incorporé ces thèmes dans la musique et les paroles ?
Vision Divine : Nous utilisons toujours la musique pour donner à nos paroles l’atmosphère appropriée. Pour chaque chapitre, nous réfléchissions à l’histoire que nous voulions raconter, puis nous commencions à travailler dans ce sens. Bien sûr, ce n’est pas un processus facile, et surtout ce n’est pas une méthode de composition très rapide : parfois, nous devions changer les paroles, et d’autres fois, nous devions ajuster la musique, mais au final, nous sommes absolument satisfaits du résultat final ; même si cela a été un défi !
MU : L’album comprend plusieurs invités spéciaux, dont Ray Alder, Alle Conti et AC Wild. Comment ces collaborations sont-elles nées et qu’ont-elles apporté à l’album ?
Vision Divine : Tout d’abord, bien sûr, ils ont apporté leur talent, enrichissant nos chansons et notre musique. Nous sommes très reconnaissants envers chacun d’eux. Leur participation n’était pas une simple « apparition en tant qu’invités », mais quelque chose de beaucoup plus lié à l’histoire, puisqu’ils incarnent chacun un personnage (sauf AC Wild, qui représente la conscience intérieure des anges, au moment où elle semble devenir irrémédiablement noire, lorsqu’ils choisissent de faire boire leur sang à certains humains pour les rendre immortels).
MU : Le son de « Blood and Angels’ Tears » a été mixé et masterisé par Simone Mularoni au Domination Studio. Qu’a-t-il apporté à ce projet et pourquoi avez-vous choisi de travailler avec lui ?
Vision Divine : Nous travaillons avec Simone depuis près de 15 ans maintenant ; il sait exactement ce dont nous avons besoin et le son que nous recherchons. De nos jours, il est presque un membre externe du groupe, absolument indispensable pour faire sonner notre musique comme il se doit et représenter l’histoire que nous voulons raconter.
MU : La pochette et les illustrations de l’album ont été créées par Augusto Silva. Pouvez-vous nous parler de la direction artistique de cet album et de la manière dont elle reflète son contenu musical et narratif ?
Vision Divine : Augusto voulait absolument faire cette pochette, il n’y avait aucun doute là-dessus ! Il a commencé à nous envoyer des échantillons dès le premier jour, nous demandant de lui en dire un peu plus sur le concept que nous allions écrire. Finalement, il est arrivé avec cette pochette que vous pouvez voir, représentant les trois anges juste après leur chute sur Terre, tous couverts de sang. C’était parfait, et nous l’avons aimée dès le premier instant où nous l’avons vue.

MU : Vous êtes souvent considéré comme le groupe qui a défini le son du power metal progressif italien. Comment pensez-vous que « Blood and Angels’ Tears » contribue à cette réputation ?
Vision Divine : Eh bien, je ne sais pas quoi dire à ce sujet parce que je n’aime pas vraiment parler de moi ou de mon groupe, mais disons-le de cette façon : nous avons définitivement tracé notre propre chemin au cours des 25 dernières années, jouant la musique que nous aimions et voulions, jusqu’à ce que les gens commencent à la reconnaître et à l’appeler « power metal progressif italien ». La chance, dans tout cela, c’est que nous n’avons pas eu besoin de copier qui que ce soit, ni de suivre une tendance. C’est ce que nous avons toujours été, ce qui signifie en même temps que nous avons toujours progressé et légèrement changé, album après album. Avec notre dernier album, BAAT, j’espère que nous avons réussi à donner aux gens un bon résumé de tout ce que nous avons fait au cours de notre carrière de 25 ans, en mélangeant nos anciennes chansons rapides avec un son plus moderne et des arrangements progressifs, tout en nous concentrant toujours sur les mélodies. Je pense que les gens qui nous appréciaient peuvent encore écouter cet album et reconnaître que c’est nous, tout en ayant l’impression que le tout sonne un peu plus moderne et donc encore intéressant à leurs oreilles.
MU : En tant que premier chapitre d’une saga en deux parties, comment avez-vous abordé la création de « Blood and Angels’ Tears » par rapport au deuxième album à venir ? Aviez-vous déjà le second album en tête lors de la création du premier ?
Vision Divine : Absolument, dès le premier instant ! En fait, l’histoire était si longue qu’il était tout simplement impossible de tout inclure en 10 ou 11 chansons. C’est pourquoi nous avons immédiatement pensé à composer deux heures de musique et à diviser les chansons en deux albums consécutifs.
MU : Comment décririez-vous votre évolution sonore depuis vos débuts ?
Vision Divine : Quelle question difficile ! J’ai vécu chaque jour, mois, année, et honnêtement, je n’ai même pas remarqué tout ce temps passer. Je sais juste qu’avec chaque nouvel album, je voulais apporter quelque chose de nouveau, essayer quelque chose de différent, parce que la musique – pour moi – doit avant tout être amusante, elle doit être un défi ; j’ai besoin de sentir que j’essaie d’évoluer et d’apprendre quelque chose de nouveau. Quand j’écoute mon premier album, par exemple, aujourd’hui, je souris parfois et je pense que certaines choses, comme la production et même l’écriture des chansons, me paraissent un peu « étranges », mais en même temps, je sais encore que ces chansons sont « des enfants de leur époque », et sans elles, je ne serais pas devenu ce que je suis aujourd’hui.
MU : Que peuvent attendre les fans de Vision Divine dans le futur après la sortie de « Blood and Angels’ Tears » et la suite prévue de cette saga ? Y a-t-il des surprises ou des projets en cours que vous pouvez partager avec nous ?
Vision Divine : Ce concept va nous occuper pendant plus de deux ans d’affilée. Honnêtement, nous n’avons aucune idée de ce qui pourrait suivre après cela, mais notre principal objectif est de JOUER, JOUER, et JOUER autant de concerts que possible. Nous espérons vraiment que tout cet intérêt qui semble tourner autour de nous en ce moment nous aidera à organiser autant de concerts et visiter autant de pays que possible.
MU : À votre avis, qu’est-ce qui vous a permis de perdurer au fil du temps malgré les changements au sein du groupe et dans l’industrie musicale en général ?
Vision Divine : C’est une autre question à laquelle je ne peux pas répondre correctement, j’en ai bien peur. La raison est très simple : quand j’ai commencé cela, je n’avais aucune idée que je serais encore là, 25 ans plus tard. Je n’ai pas l’habitude de vivre dans le passé et en même temps, je n’aime pas trop penser à l’avenir, car personne ne sait ce qui va arriver le lendemain, imaginez un quart de siècle ! Je vis dans le présent et j’essaie de profiter de chaque jour, et lorsque je fais de la musique, j’applique la même règle : tenter de relever de nouveaux défis qui, chaque fois, me permettent de me sentir vivant et « heureux » de faire ce que je fais.
MU : Quel est, selon vous, votre plus grand accomplissement en tant que musicien ?
Vision Divine : D’être encore ici, d’avoir des fans dans tous les coins du monde, et, comme vous l’avez demandé un peu plus tôt, d’avoir survécu à tous les changements qui se sont produits au cours de ces 25 dernières années dans l’industrie musicale, tout en ayant encore beaucoup à dire. Ce qui a commencé à l’origine comme un « projet », que beaucoup pensaient ne pas durer plus de quelques années, est encore vivant et est aujourd’hui considéré comme l’un des moteurs de la scène italienne. Ce n’est pas quelque chose d’ordinaire, je dirais, et c’est plus que suffisant pour me rendre fier de tout cela.
MU : Avant de conclure, avez-vous un dernier mot pour nos lecteurs ?
Vision Divine : Merci beaucoup pour votre intérêt. Permettez-moi de conclure en disant que je suis déjà venu au Canada en tant que touriste, mais je n’ai jamais eu l’occasion d’y jouer avec mon groupe. J’espère vraiment que cela changera cette fois, donc j’espère avoir bientôt la chance d’y apporter ma musique ! Passez une excellente journée !

In recent days, our journalist Marc Desgagné from MetalUniverse.net conducted an interview with guitarist/founder Olaf Thörsen regarding the release of the ninth album by the Italian progressive power metal band VISION DIVINE. Titled Blood and Angels’ Tears, the album contains 12 tracks. This is the second album featuring singer Ivan Giannini and the first with drummer Matt Peruzzi. Originally, VISION DIVINE was Olaf Thörsen‘s solo project (Labÿrinth), which then evolved into its current form. We discuss the new album, his career, and the long history of Vision Divine. The album Blood and Angels’ Tears has been available via Scarlet Records since September 20, 2024.
MU : Congratulations on the release of your 9th album, « Blood and Angels’ Tears »! Can you tell us about the concept behind this album and how it fits into the epic saga you’ve created?
Vision Divine : Thank you! BAAT is a concept based on a book I wrote before starting the album. During the war between the Archangel Michael and Lucifer, three angels were unable to choose a side. As punishment, they were exiled to an ancient Earth, far removed from any sort of ancient civilizations. Consumed by guilt, they decided to separate, vowing never to meet again. Arhemann went to the west, Kah-Kl-Han to the Far East, and Asar, the main protagonist, stayed in the central lands. Millennia passed, with the angels granting a few humans immortality for companionship. However, mysterious events began to cause these immortal humans to vanish. Realizing the growing danger, Asar broke the ancient vow to reunite with his brothers and confront the threat, which soon revealed itself as Baal, one of Lucifer’s most powerful princes, sent to conquer Earth. The story ends with the three characters reuniting, faced with a critical choice once again. The conclusion will be released in the next album, expected in 2025.
MU : This is the second album with Ivan Giannini as the singer and the first with Matt Peruzzi on drums. How have these lineup changes influenced the group dynamics and the recording process for « Blood and Angels’ Tears »?
Vision Divine : It all went very smooth and there wasn’t any special need to change dynamics nor anything else. We’ve been spending the last 5 years playing quite a lot with Ivan and Mattia also is a long time friend of ours, so things were pretty easy and clear since the very start of the songwriting.
MU : The album tells the story of three angels banished from Heaven after a cataclysmic war. What inspired you to explore this particular theme?
Vision Divine : I was reading Dante’s Inferno, and I stopped on the paragraph which we also use as narration for the last song of this album. It talks about the “Ignavi,” an Italian word to describe indifferent people, those who couldn’t ever make a choice in their lives. He also mentions some angels, and I thought: all these angels, before this cataclysmic war, were supposedly brothers; how could they all take a side so easily? What if someone didn’t make it so easily? What would have happened, in case? That’s how I started to think about a story and then wrote a book about it.
MU : You mentioned that each album is like a chapter in a grand film. Have you ever thought about adapting this story into a visual project, like a short film or something like that?
Vision Divine : We simply don’t have the budget, the contacts, and the tools to make it happen, unfortunately, but I guess it would work. So far, I wrote a book about it anyway, and who knows… maybe someday!
MU : Themes of redemption, unity, and resilience seem to be at the core of this album. How did you incorporate these themes into the music and lyrics?
Vision Divine : We always use music to make our lyrics get the proper atmosphere, so for every chapter we were thinking about which point of the story we were going to tell, and then we started working in that direction. Of course, it’s not an easy process, and most of all it’s not a very quick way of composing: sometimes we had to change the lyrics and other times we had to change or adapt the music, but in the end, we’re absolutely satisfied with the final result; it’s been a challenge though!
MU : The album features several special guests, including Ray Alder, Alle Conti, and AC Wild. How did these collaborations come about, and what did they bring to the album?
Vision Divine : First of all, of course, they brought their talent, enriching our songs and our music. We’re so grateful to each one of them. Of course, their participation hasn’t been a mere “guest appearance,” but something much more connected to the story, since each one of them is playing the part of a character (except AC Wild, who’s representing the angels’ inner conscience, at the moment it seems to turn irremediably black, the moment they chose to have some humans drink their blood and become immortal).
MU : The sound of « Blood and Angels’ Tears » was mixed and mastered by Simone Mularoni at Domination Studio. What did Simone bring to this project, and why did you choose to work with him?
Vision Divine : We’ve been working with Simone for almost 15 years now; he knows exactly what we need and the sound we’re looking for, and nowadays he’s nothing less but an external member of the band, absolutely needed in order to make everything sound the way we need and to represent the music and the story we’re going to tell.
MU : The cover and artwork for the album were created by Augusto Silva. Can you tell us about the artistic direction of this album and how it reflects its musical and narrative content?
Vision Divine : Augusto wanted to make this cover, no doubt about it! He started sending us samples since day 1, asking to know a bit of the concept we were going to write. In the end, he came up with this cover you can see, representing the three Angels right after their fall on Earth, all covered in blood. It was just perfect, and we loved it since the very first moment we saw it.
MU : You are often considered the band that defined the Italian progressive power metal sound. How do you think « Blood and Angels’ Tears » contributes to this reputation?
Vision Divine : Well, I don’t know what to say about it because I don’t ever like talking about myself or my band, but let’s put it this way: we definitely walked our own path along these last 25 years, playing the music we liked and we wanted, until somehow people started to recognize it and call it “Italian progressive power.” The luck, in all this, is that we didn’t have to copy anyone, nor did we have to follow a trend. That’s what we’ve always been, which at the same time always meant to progress and slightly change, album after album. With our latest one, BAAT, I hope we made it to give people a nice resume of everything we’ve done along our 25-year-long career, by mixing our “old style” fast songs with a more modern sound and some progressive arrangements, while still focusing on the melodies. I think people who liked us can still listen to this album and recognize it’s us, while at the same time, it all sounds a bit more modern and thus still interesting to their ears.
MU : As the first chapter of a two-part saga, how did you approach the creation of « Blood and Angels’ Tears » compared to the upcoming second album? Did you have the second album in mind while working on the first?
Vision Divine : Absolutely, since the very first moment! The fact is that the story was so long that it resulted simply impossible to have it all done in 10, 11 songs. That’s why we immediately thought about composing 2 hours of music and splitting the songs into 2 consecutive albums.
MU : How would you describe your sonic evolution since your beginnings?
Vision Divine : What a difficult question to answer! I lived every single day, month, year, and I honestly didn’t even notice all this time passing by. I just know that with every new album, I wanted to bring something new, to try something different, because music – to me – MUST first of all be fun, it must be challenging; I need to feel like I’m trying to evolve and learn something new. When I listen to my first album, for example, nowadays I sometimes smile and think some things like the production and even the songwriting seem to be a bit “weird” to my ears, but at the same time, I still know those songs are “sons of their times,” and without those, I wouldn’t have become what I am today.
MU : What can Vision Divine fans expect in the future after the release of « Blood and Angels’ Tears » and the planned follow-up to this saga? Are there any surprises or projects in the works that you can share with us?
Vision Divine : This concept is going to keep us busy for more than 2 years in a row. Honestly, we have no idea of what could come after this, but for sure our main target is to PLAY, PLAY, and PLAY as many live shows as we can. We really hope all this interest which is clearly swirling around us at this moment will help us to book as many shows and visit as many countries as we can.
MU : In your opinion, what has allowed you to endure over time despite the changes in the band and the music industry in general?
Vision Divine : This is another question I cannot answer properly, I’m afraid. The reason is very simple: when I started this, I had no idea I would still have been here, 25 years later. I am not used to live in the past and at the same time I don’t like to think too much about the future, since nobody knows what’s going to happen they day after, imagine a quarter of century! I live the present and try to enjoy every single day, when I make music I use the same rule, trying to start new challenges which every time can make me feel alive and “happy” to be doing what I’m doing.
MU: What do you consider your greatest achievement as a musician?
Vision Divine: To be still here, to have fans in every corner of the World, and, as you asked shortly before, to have survived all the changes happened in these last 25 years in this music industry, while still having much to say. What originally started as a “project”, which many believed wouldn’t have lasted more than a couple of years, is still alive and nowadays considered to be one of the prime movers of the Italian scene. That’s not something ordinary, I would say, and that’s more than enough to make me feel proud of it all.
MU: Before we wrap up, do you have any final words for our readers?
Vision Divine : Thank you so much for your interest, let me close this with saying that I’ve been visiting Canada as a tourist, but I’ve never had the chance of playing there with my band. I truly hope things may change this time, so I’m hoping someday soon to have a chance to bring my music over there! Have a great day!
