Entrevue avec BAEST
Notre rédacteur Marc Desgagné a eu l’occasion de s’entretenir avec le guitariste Svend Karlsson du groupe de death/heavy metal old school BAEST. Originaire du Danemark, BAEST s’est rapidement imposé comme une référence du genre avec ses riffs puissants, son groove irrésistible et son énergie brute sur scène. À l’approche de la sortie de leur quatrième album complet Colossal, prévue le 15 août 2025 via Century Media Records, Svend nous parle de l’évolution musicale du groupe, de leurs collaborations, de leur vision artistique et de leur passage récent en sol québécois.

MU: Colossal sortira le 15 août 2025 via Century Media Records. Après deux années de développement, comment vous sentez-vous à l’idée de finalement dévoiler ce quatrième album complet ?
Svend Karlsson: C’est génial de pouvoir enfin sortir cet album. Le son et le style ont tellement évolué au cours de ces deux années, mais nous avons l’impression de conserver notre groove et notre signature sonore. Cet album est frais et honnête, et nous avons hâte de voir la réaction du public !
MU: Vous décrivez Colossal comme une direction plus mélodique et honnête pour BAEST. À quel point a-t-il été difficile de trouver un équilibre entre vos racines old school death metal et cette nouvelle évolution musicale ?
Svend Karlsson: Ça a été un vrai défi de trouver cet équilibre, mais au final, nous avons suivi ce qui sonnait bien lors des répétitions. Nous avons présenté certaines chansons sur scène avant de les enregistrer et choisi les arrangements qui fonctionnaient le mieux en live. Nous avons tenté de capturer cette énergie sur l’album, en enregistrant la majeure partie du disque en conditions live également.
MU: Le morceau d’ouverture Stormbringer commence avec un groove presque digne de ZZ Top avant de plonger dans une lourde offensive. Ce contraste était-il intentionnel ?
Svend Karlsson: Ce feeling d’intro semblait presque “interdit”, mais le résultat était tellement amusant et révélateur du ton de Stormbringer. Et puis… qui ne rêve pas de jouer un riff à la AC/DC ou ZZ Top ?
MU: Colossus est massif, groovy et chargé de toute la crasse du death metal. Qu’est-ce qui a inspiré le ton et le rythme de ce titre ?
Svend Karlsson: Colossus est l’un des titres les plus lourds de l’album, et ce son fait toujours partie intégrante de BAEST. Nous avons pris autant de plaisir à l’écrire que pour les autres morceaux. Nous voulions intégrer une certaine mélodie dans cette lourdeur, en y ajoutant un clin d’œil dans la direction de Slayer (hail).
MU: King of the Sun met en vedette Jesper Binzer (D-A-D) au chant. Comment cette collaboration a-t-elle vu le jour et qu’a-t-il apporté au morceau ?
Svend Karlsson: C’est Simon qui a eu l’idée d’inviter Jesper. C’est une légende du rock au Danemark, donc on ne s’attendait pas à ce qu’il accepte — mais il l’a fait, et ce fut un moment “holy shit” pour nous tous ! King of the Sun plonge profondément dans les influences 80’s, donc c’était logique d’avoir un vrai rocker sur ce titre.
MU: Vous avez aussi invité ORM sur Misfortunate Son. Qu’est-ce qui en faisait le choix idéal pour cette chanson ?
Svend Karlsson: Misfortunate Son est restée inachevée pendant longtemps, jusqu’à ce que Lasse apporte ce riff black metal en répétition. Ça a tout débloqué et apporté un contraste intéressant. Nous voulions collaborer avec ORM depuis le début de BAEST. Ils nous ont inspirés à former le groupe. On a la chance de les compter parmi nos amis, et leur participation collait parfaitement au morceau.
MU: La production est à la fois lourde et claire. Comment s’est passée la collaboration avec Tue Madsen au Antfarm Studio ?
Svend Karlsson: Tue est un maître dans son domaine. Son expérience et son savoir-faire nous ont beaucoup apporté. Quand nous doutions de l’équilibre à trouver dans l’écriture, Tue nous a rassurés et encouragés à suivre ce qui nous semblait juste. Ça nous a donné la confiance dont nous avions besoin.
MU: Light the Beacons est un instrumental, ce qui est plutôt rare dans le death metal. Pourquoi avoir décidé de l’inclure, et à cet endroit précis sur l’album ?
Svend Karlsson: Ce morceau a été écrit comme un “walk on” track, pour notre entrée sur scène. C’est épique, imposant (colossal) mais aussi un peu humoristique. Imaginez un pré dans le Seigneur des Anneaux, du rock et une bonne pinte — c’est l’idée.
MU: Colossus et Imp of the Perverse sont sortis presque un an avant l’album. Comment le fait de les jouer en live a-t-il influencé leurs versions finales ?
Svend Karlsson: Ce sont les premières chansons que nous avons terminées pour ce disque, et elles ont aidé à définir la direction de l’album. Nous avons beaucoup joué Colossus en concert avant de l’enregistrer, et c’était le genre de lourdeur nécessaire pour rassembler tous les styles présents dans notre écriture.
MU: Des titres comme Mouth of the River sonnent plus agressifs, frôlant le brutal death à la Suffocation. Était-ce volontaire ?
Svend Karlsson: Le brutal death metal reste une grosse influence pour BAEST. Des morceaux comme Womb to Waste de Dying Fetus font toujours partie de nos “party starters”. Nous ne laisserons jamais tomber ces inspirations. Mouth of the River contient aussi un gros clin d’œil à Carcass (Heartwork).
MU: L’artwork signé Solomacello est intense et mémorable. Quel concept vouliez-vous mettre en avant visuellement avec Colossal ?
Svend Karlsson: Nous voulions retrouver les vibes heavy metal classiques que nous avions en écrivant cet album — Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy (Chinatown) — tout en conservant notre imagerie bestiale. Solomacello a fait un travail exceptionnel !

MU: Vous avez récemment joué à Montréal. Avez-vous apprécié votre passage ? Peut-on espérer vous voir bientôt à Québec ?
Svend Karlsson: Montréal a été incroyable, avec l’une des plus grosses foules de la tournée ! Et oui, on travaille fort pour revenir en Amérique du Nord.
MU: Colossal est votre quatrième album avec la même formation — chose de plus en plus rare aujourd’hui. Comment expliquez-vous cette stabilité au sein de BAEST ?
Svend Karlsson: On se retrouve chaque lundi matin pour répéter, écrire, préparer le merch et gérer tout ce qui touche au groupe. C’est de la dédication totale. On est comme une famille maintenant, il n’y a pas de retour en arrière possible !
MU: Si Colossal devait être adapté en film, quel genre serait-ce et qui le réaliserait ?
Svend Karlsson: Définitivement de la fantasy à la Seigneur des Anneaux. Donjons et Dragons, batailles et bières.

Interview with BAEST
Our journalist Marc Desgagné had the chance to speak with guitarist Svend Karlsson from the old school death/heavy metal band BAEST. Hailing from Denmark, BAEST has quickly made a name for itself with crushing riffs, irresistible groove, and raw live energy. With the release of their fourth full-length album Colossal coming up on August 15, 2025 via Century Media Records, Svend talks about the band’s musical evolution, collaborations, artistic vision, and their recent time in Quebec.
MU: Colossal will be released on August 15, 2025 via Century Media Records. After two years in the making, how does it feel to finally unveil this fourth full-length album?
Svend Karlsson: It’s great to finally release this album. The sound and style have evolved so much over these two years, but we feel we’ve kept our groove and signature sound. This album is fresh and honest, and we can’t wait to see the crowd’s reaction!
MU: You describe Colossal as a more melodic and honest direction for BAEST. How difficult was it to find a balance between your old school death metal roots and this new musical evolution?
Svend Karlsson: It was definitely a challenge to find that balance, but in the end, we went with what felt good during rehearsals. We played some of the songs live before recording them and chose the arrangements that worked best on stage. We tried to capture that live energy on the album, recording most of it live as well.
MU: The opening track Stormbringer starts with a groove almost reminiscent of ZZ Top before plunging into a heavy onslaught. Was that contrast intentional?
Svend Karlsson: That intro almost felt “forbidden,” but the result was so much fun and really set the tone for Stormbringer. And who doesn’t dream of playing an AC/DC or ZZ Top riff?
MU: Colossus is massive, groovy, and dripping with death metal grit. What inspired the tone and pacing of this track?
Svend Karlsson: Colossus is one of the heaviest songs on the record, and that sound is still a big part of BAEST. We had as much fun writing it as any other song. We wanted to incorporate some melody into the heaviness, with a nod in Slayer’s direction (hail).
MU: King of the Sun features Jesper Binzer (D-A-D) on vocals. How did that collaboration come about, and what did he bring to the track?
Svend Karlsson: Simon had the idea to invite Jesper. He’s a rock legend in Denmark, so we didn’t expect him to say yes — but he did, and it was a total “holy shit” moment for all of us! King of the Sun dives deep into those ’80s influences, so it felt perfect to have a true rocker on that track.
MU: You also brought in ORM for Misfortunate Son. What made them the right choice for this song?
Svend Karlsson: Misfortunate Son stayed unfinished for a long time until Lasse brought that black metal riff to rehearsal. It unlocked the song and added a great contrast. We’ve wanted to work with ORM since the beginning of BAEST. They inspired us to even start the band. We’re lucky to call them friends, and their contribution fit perfectly.
MU: The production has both heaviness and clarity. What was it like working with Tue Madsen at Antfarm Studio again?
Svend Karlsson: Tue is a master at what he does. His experience and skill brought us a lot. When we were struggling with finding that balance in songwriting, Tue was a huge support, reassuring us that our direction was right and that we should follow what felt good. It gave us the confidence boost we needed.
MU: Light the Beacons is an instrumental — something rare in death metal. Why did you decide to include it, and why place it in that particular spot on the album?
Svend Karlsson: This track was written as a “walk on” song for when we enter the stage. It’s epic, big (colossal), but also tongue-in-cheek and fun. Picture a grassy meadow, Lord of the Rings, rocking out with a proper pint — that’s the vibe.
MU: Colossus and Imp of the Perverse were released almost a year before the album. How did playing them live help shape their final versions?
Svend Karlsson: These were the first songs finished for the record and helped define the album’s direction. We played Colossus live a lot before recording, and it was the kind of heaviness we needed to bring all the styles in the songwriting together.
MU: Tracks like Mouth of the River sound more aggressive, bordering on brutal death à la Suffocation. Was that intentional?
Svend Karlsson: Brutal death metal is still a big influence for BAEST. A party starter for us has always been Dying Fetus’ Womb to Waste, and we’ll never let go of those inspirations. Mouth of the River also gives a big nod to Carcass’ Heartwork.
MU: The artwork by Solomacello is intense and memorable. What visual concept did you want to bring out with Colossal?
Svend Karlsson: We wanted to capture those classic heavy metal vibes we felt while writing this album — Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy (Chinatown) — while still keeping the beast imagery alive. Solomacello nailed it!
MU: You recently played in Montreal. Did you enjoy your time there? And can we hope to see you in Quebec City soon?
Svend Karlsson: Montreal was amazing, with one of the biggest crowds of the tour! And yes, we’re working hard to get back to North America.
MU: Colossal marks your fourth album with the same lineup — something rare these days. What do you think has kept BAEST so stable over the years?
Svend Karlsson: We meet up every Monday morning to rehearse, write, ship merch, and handle all the band’s business. It’s total dedication. We’re basically family now — there’s no turning back!
MU: If Colossal were turned into a film, what genre would it be, and who would direct it?
Svend Karlsson: Definitely fantasy in the style of Lord of the Rings. Dungeons & Dragons, battles, and beers.
