La formation montréalaise SEUM vient de publier son troisième album, Parking Life, ce jeudi 23 avril 2026. Retour sur ce disque de Doom’N’Bass !
SEUM, qui veut dire « venin » en arabe ou encore « être dégoûté/frustré » en langage de rue en France, est un trio formé par trois musiciens originaires de Paris en France, mais qui vivent à Montréal. La particularité du projet est l’absence de guitare, c’est donc la basse qui fait office d’instrument à cordes principal. Le groupe est composé de : Piotr Ignatowicz à la basse, de Frédéric Lepoutre à la batterie et de Gaspard Carrey au chant.
Dans leur discographie, ils ont sorti Winterized en 2021 et Double Double en 2023.
Sur Parking Life, comparé aux deux disques précédents, il y a un chant clair et un côté mélodique plus travaillé. Cela rend le tout plus digeste et surtout plus accessible pour élargir le public de mélomanes fans de doom/sludge. Un invité connu dans la scène sludge montréalaise a prêté sa voix sur le titre 666 Problems : Vincent Houde de Dopethrone.
Leur univers musical est un sludge/doom avec des éléments de punk hardcore, et il pourrait plaire aux fans de Dopethrone, Weedeater, Clutch et Iron Monkey.
J’ai aimé l’album dans son ensemble, surtout le groove qu’ont les compositions, le côté sale/garage un peu thrash de leur son et l’intensité du chant. Si je devais choisir trois morceaux sur l’album, j’irais avec Employee Of The Month, Labrador et Always On My Mind (reprise de Willie Nelson).
Je suis un peu resté sur ma faim à cause de la durée de l’album : 26 minutes, qui est, si je prends la définition, plutôt un EP ! Mais ce n’est pas grave, le disque est très agréable et en plus c’est un groupe d’ici. The Montreal band SEUM has just released their third album, Parking Life, this Thursday, April 23. A look back at this Doom’N’Bass record!
SEUM, which means “venom” in Arabic or “being disgusted/frustrated” in French street slang, is a trio formed by three musicians originally from Paris, France, but now based in Montreal. The project’s distinctive feature is the absence of a guitar, with the bass taking on the role of the main string instrument. The band consists of Piotr Ignatowicz on bass, Frédéric Lepoutre on drums, and Gaspard Carrey on vocals.
In their discography, they released Winterized in 2021 and Double Double in 2023.
On Parking Life, compared to the two previous records, there is cleaner vocal work and a more developed melodic side. This makes the whole more digestible and especially more accessible, helping to reach a broader audience of doom/sludge fans. A well-known guest from the Montreal sludge scene lends his voice on the track 666 Problems: Vincent Houde from Dopethrone.
Their musical universe blends sludge/doom with elements of hardcore punk, and it could appeal to fans of Dopethrone, Weedeater, Clutch, and Iron Monkey.
I enjoyed the album overall, especially the groove in the compositions, the dirty/garage, slightly thrashy edge of their sound, and the intensity of the vocals. If I had to pick three tracks from the album, I’d go with Employee Of The Month, Labrador, and Always On My Mind (a cover of Willie Nelson).
I was left a bit wanting more due to the album’s length: 26 minutes, which, if I go by definition, is closer to an EP! But that’s not a big deal, the record is very enjoyable, and on top of that, it’s a local band.
