Marc Desgagné de MetalUniverse.net a récemment réalisé une entrevue avec le groupe metalcore/hardcore/heavy metal Varials afin de discuter de leur nouvel album Where the Light Leaves, paru le 27 février 2026 via Fearless Records. Au cours de cette conversation, le groupe revient notamment sur la naissance du titre de l’album, la vision derrière la pièce d’ouverture, l’évolution sonore de la formation depuis ses débuts, ainsi que l’arrivée du nouveau chanteur Skyler Conder. Les membres abordent également les thèmes très personnels et intenses présents sur le disque, notamment le deuil, l’isolement et les émotions qui ont marqué le processus d’écriture.

MU: Votre nouvel album Where the Light Leaves, paru le 27 février 2026 via Fearless Records, donne l’impression d’une puissante réintroduction à Varials. À quel moment avez-vous réalisé que ce disque représenterait un nouveau chapitre pour le groupe ?
VARIALS: Je pense que c’est venu naturellement, dès que nous avons trouvé le titre. Je me souviens que nous étions dans un Airbnb, l’album était presque terminé et nous n’avions toujours aucune idée du nom que nous allions lui donner. Bien sûr, il y avait quelques idées qui circulaient, mais aucune ne nous parlait vraiment. Un soir, nous étions simplement en train de préparer le souper et de relaxer après une journée de travail au studio. Il y avait une ligne que j’avais écrite dans une autre chanson du disque, « Where the Light Leaves », et Mike l’a mentionnée. Immédiatement, il y a eu un moment particulier dans la pièce, une sorte d’évidence partagée par nous quatre. Nous avons su à ce moment précis que c’était le titre. Ça arrive rarement de découvrir un titre de cette façon. Habituellement, je sais comment je vais appeler un projet bien avant qu’il prenne vie, mais là, c’était vraiment un moment un peu magique entre nous quatre. C’était vraiment cool.
MU: La pièce titre ressemble à une véritable déclaration d’intention, autant musicalement qu’émotionnellement. Pourquoi Where the Light Leaves était-elle la bonne chanson pour introduire le concept global de l’album ?
VARIALS: Ça nous semblait simplement être la bonne décision. Structurer toutes ces chansons pour qu’elles s’enchaînent de façon cohérente a été un exercice très difficile où il fallait faire des choix. Mais au final, je pense que c’est exactement comme ça que ça devait être. Commencer l’album avec une chanson aussi intense que « Where the Light Leaves » était le bon move, et je ne pense pas qu’aucun de nous voudrait changer ça.
MU: Plusieurs pièces de l’album sont présentées entre crochets, comme [wouldyoufollowme] et [intothequiet]. Que représentent ces titres et comment s’intègrent-ils dans la structure globale du disque ?
VARIALS: Ce sont essentiellement des interludes, et nous avons utilisé les crochets pour les distinguer. Mais ils jouent aussi un rôle important pour maintenir la fluidité de l’album. C’est ce que nous aimions le plus à propos de ces moments, et c’est ce qui nous a convaincus de les garder.
MU: Voyez-vous Where the Light Leaves comme une seule narration ou un arc émotionnel qui doit être vécu du début à la fin, plutôt que comme une simple collection de chansons individuelles ?
VARIALS: Pour nous, et pour les auditeurs aussi, c’est clairement un album qui doit être écouté du début à la fin, comme la plupart des albums d’ailleurs. Mais on sait qu’il y aura rapidement des morceaux favoris chez les fans. Cela dit, il a vraiment été pensé comme une histoire complète, du début à la fin.
MU: Plus de dix ans après vos premières sorties, comment voyez-vous l’évolution du son de Varials aujourd’hui ? Est-ce là où vous imaginiez que le groupe finirait par se rendre ?
VARIALS: Le groupe continue d’intégrer des sons et des émotions qui vont au-delà du style initial avec lequel nous avons commencé. Repousser les limites est quelque chose que nous cherchons toujours à faire, et trouver une façon de fusionner ces nouvelles influences avec le côté agressif et direct de Varials peut être à la fois révélateur et parfois difficile. Mais nous sommes très reconnaissants d’être là où nous sommes aujourd’hui et excités de voir où tout cela va nous mener.
MU: En repensant à des albums comme Pain Again et In Darkness, qu’est-ce qui a le plus changé dans votre façon d’écrire et d’arranger les chansons ?
VARIALS: Avec l’arrivée de nouveaux membres, l’approche est totalement différente. C’est le premier album avec Skyler et le premier où moi, Shane, je compose et j’arrange les chansons. Mais aujourd’hui, je dirais que le « feeling » est encore plus important pour nous. Quand je présente des idées, je fais beaucoup attention à l’ambiance dans la pièce.
MU: Le processus d’enregistrement a clairement évolué au fil des années. Comparé à vos premières sorties, qu’est-ce qui a le plus changé en studio, que ce soit en termes de préparation, de production ou d’état d’esprit ?
VARIALS: Avant, c’était facile de trop analyser certains aspects de la musique. Au final, la plupart de ces détails sont insignifiants pour l’auditeur. Aujourd’hui, nous mettons davantage l’accent sur ce que la musique essaie réellement de « dire ».
MU: Cet album marque les débuts de Skyler Conder comme nouveau chanteur de Varials. Comment avez-vous d’abord connecté avec lui et qu’est-ce qui vous a convaincus qu’il était la bonne personne pour le groupe ?
VARIALS: Nous connaissons Skyler depuis longtemps. Vers 2016, nous avons rencontré un de ses anciens groupes qui jouait avec nous quelques fois en Oklahoma. Ce qui est drôle, c’est que nous avons failli le faire entrer dans le groupe en 2021 lorsque nous travaillions sur notre dernier album. Je crois qu’il avait enregistré environ 75 % des voix sur SFYTR, mais finalement nous avons décidé de ne pas aller dans cette direction à ce moment-là. Quand nous sommes revenus à une période un peu stagnante pour le groupe, nous savions que c’était lui qu’il nous fallait. Skyler est un chanteur et un frontman incroyable, et nous nous entendons tous très bien avec lui, donc nous savions que c’était le bon choix cette fois.
MU: Skyler apporte une intensité et une présence émotionnelle très marquées sur ce disque. Qu’est-ce que vous pensez qu’il apporte à Varials qui pousse le groupe vers de nouveaux territoires ?
VARIALS: Nous avons toujours respecté le fait que Sky vient du même milieu hardcore que nous, du même environnement et des mêmes racines musicales. Sa présence est incroyable et son énergie est extrêmement brute. Nous sommes vraiment heureux que tout se soit déroulé de cette façon.
MU: Sur le plan des paroles, Where the Light Leaves explore des thèmes comme l’isolement, un purgatoire mental et l’acceptation. Comment ces idées ont-elles pris forme durant le processus d’écriture ?
VARIALS: Pour moi personnellement, cet album a été un processus de deuil. J’avais perdu mon frère aîné dans un grave accident de moto et j’ai dû partir pour le studio seulement deux jours plus tard, donc je n’ai même pas eu le temps de réaliser ce qui venait de se passer. Je me souviens d’être arrivé à Philadelphie complètement vidé, en silence pendant quelques jours. Puis, quand nous sommes arrivés au Michigan et que je suis entré dans la cabine pour enregistrer les voix, toute cette colère, cette confusion et cette tristesse sont sorties d’un coup. Ça a vraiment donné vie à l’album. On peut l’entendre dans ma voix. La douleur est présente dans la performance. Je n’essayais pas d’avoir l’air dur ou quoi que ce soit. J’étais simplement en colère et j’avais beaucoup de choses à dire. Nous traversions tous des moments très difficiles, remplis de frustration et de trahison pendant l’écriture de ce disque, et je pense que ces émotions se ressentent dans toute la musique.
MU: Romance II se démarque immédiatement, surtout quand on pense à l’impact et au succès durable de Romance sur In Darkness en 2019. D’où est venue l’idée de créer une suite ? Est-ce une continuation directe au niveau des thèmes et de la charge émotionnelle ? Et qu’est-ce que les fans devraient s’attendre à ressentir en découvrant Romance II ?
VARIALS: Pour être honnête, nous étions très partagés quant à savoir si cette chanson devait se retrouver sur l’album. C’est aussi une des dernières chansons dont les voix ont été enregistrées, justement parce qu’il s’agissait d’une suite à l’une de nos pièces les plus importantes. Mais une fois terminée et après l’avoir réécoutée, nous nous sommes dit : « OK, oui, c’est vraiment bon. » Sur le plan des paroles, la chanson parle simplement d’un cœur brisé et de l’impossibilité de vivre sans sa moitié. Je voulais montrer un côté plus émotionnel de moi comme chanteur, au-delà de l’agressivité constante d’un frontman. C’est clairement une de mes chansons préférées sur l’album.
MU: Ces dernières années, le metalcore connaît une forte résurgence, notamment avec un retour à une certaine brutalité, à l’attitude hardcore et à des émotions très brutes. Qu’est-ce que cela représente pour Varials de faire partie de ce mouvement ?
VARIALS: C’est extrêmement gratifiant pour nous, surtout quand on pense que nous jouons de la musique depuis plus d’une décennie. Voir la communauté metal grandir et devenir ce qu’elle est aujourd’hui est vraiment quelque chose de magnifique. Je pense sincèrement que ça ne fera que s’améliorer dans les cinq à dix prochaines années.

MU: Varials a toujours su équilibrer une lourdeur écrasante avec de l’atmosphère et du groove. Comment avez-vous travaillé ces textures sur cet album sans perdre les racines hardcore du groupe ?
VARIALS: Quand nous avons commencé à écrire cet album, tout est venu assez naturellement. Ce groupe a toujours su être lourd et direct, ce que beaucoup de gens apprécient. Mais avec cet album, nous voulions pousser cela encore plus loin, et je pense que nous avons réussi.
MU: En regardant toute votre carrière jusqu’à maintenant, quel spectacle reste le plus mémorable pour vous, que ce soit pour des raisons personnelles, l’ambiance ou un moment marquant pour le groupe ?
VARIALS: Je dirais dans le top 3 : la première fois que nous avons joué au Warped Tour, le Bloodaxe Fest au Japon et les festivals Danny Wimmer. Le tournage du vidéoclip de « Bleeding » aussi. Ce sont tous des moments assez irréels.
MU: Quand vous pensez à Varials dans cinq ans, quels éléments de Where the Light Leaves espérez-vous voir continuer à définir le groupe ?
VARIALS: Quand j’ai rejoint le groupe, c’était très stressant pour moi. Je devais prendre la place de quelqu’un et j’avais peur que les gens n’aiment pas ça. Mais dès le départ, je savais ce que je devais faire et quel était mon rôle. Je voulais rappeler aux gens pourquoi ils sont tombés amoureux de ce groupe il y a plus de dix ans, tout en apportant une nouvelle énergie. Je pense que nous avons réussi à le faire du mieux possible. J’espère que cet album restera aussi marquant que Pain Again et In Darkness. J’ai vraiment hâte de le partager avec le monde.
MU: Votre passage au Québec est encore assez récent avec votre spectacle en février 2025. Y a-t-il déjà des discussions ou des plans pour un retour en 2026 ?
VARIALS: Pour le moment, rien que nous pouvons annoncer, mais nous avons bien l’intention de revenir au Canada dès que possible.
MU: Avant de conclure, merci d’avoir pris le temps de discuter avec nous. Maintenant que Where the Light Leaves est disponible, quel message aimeriez-vous laisser aux fans de longue date et à ceux qui découvrent Varials pour la première fois ?
VARIALS: Nous espérons que cet album accomplira ce qu’il était censé accomplir, autant pour nos fans que pour nous-mêmes. Merci à tous ceux qui sont encore avec nous après toutes ces années. Marc Desgagné of MetalUniverse.net recently conducted an interview with the metalcore/hardcore/heavy metal band Varials to discuss their new album Where the Light Leaves, released on February 27, 2026 via Fearless Records. During the conversation, the band reflects on the origin of the album’s title, the vision behind the opening track, the evolution of the band’s sound over the years, and the arrival of new vocalist Skyler Conder. The members also discuss the deeply personal themes explored throughout the record, including grief, isolation, and the intense emotions that shaped the songwriting process.
MU: Your new album Where the Light Leaves, released on February 27, 2026 via Fearless Records, feels like a powerful reintroduction to Varials. At what point did you realize this record would represent a new chapter for the band?
VARIALS: I think it came naturally to us, realizing this was the next era, as soon as we came up with the title. I remember us being in the Airbnb; it was almost finished, and we still had no clue what we were going to call it. Obviously, we had ideas in the air, but none that connected with any of us. But we were sitting there one night making dinner and just decompressing from the work day at the studio and there was a line I had written (which was WHERE THE LIGHT LEAVES) in a later track on the record and Mike brought it up and there was this immediate feeling in the room that struck all of us and we knew then and there what it was meant to be. It isn’t often you discover it like that. Normally, for me, I know what I’m going to call a project way ahead of it even being brought to life, but this was just a somewhat magical moment shared amongst us four. It was really cool.
MU: The title track feels like a mission statement, both musically and emotionally. Why was Where the Light Leaves the right song to introduce the overall concept of the album?
VARIALS: It just felt like the right thing to do. Structuring all of these songs to flow into each other cohesively was such a hard “pick and choose” moment for everyone, but I think, at the end of it all, it is exactly how it was meant to be. Kicking the album off with a track as intense as “Where the Light Leaves” was the correct move, and I don’t believe any of us would change that ever.
MU: Several tracks on the album are presented with brackets, like [wouldyoufollowme] and [intothequiet]. What do those titles represent, and how do they fit into the larger structure of the record?
VARIALS: These are more or less interlude tracks, and we used the brackets to help distinguish that, but they do help keep the album flow moving beautifully, which is what we liked most about them and what helped us decide to keep them.
MU: Do you see Where the Light Leaves as a single narrative or emotional arc meant to be experienced from start to finish, rather than just a collection of individual songs?
VARIALS: From us to the listeners, we all say it is an album that should be listened to from start to finish (as should most), but we know there’s going to be the fan favorites within the first bit of time it’s shared with the world. It was meant to be heard in that context. A story from the top to the end, to say the least.
MU: More than ten years after releasing your earliest material, how do you look at the evolution of Varials’ sound today, and is this where you imagined the band would eventually end up?
VARIALS: The band continues to incorporate sounds and feelings outside of the initial stylings that we started with. Pushing boundaries is something we strive for and finding a way to mesh that with the straightforward Varials aggressive sound has been eye-opening and sometimes difficult. We feel grateful for where we are and excited for where things can and will go.
MU: Looking back to albums like Pain Again and In Darkness, what do you feel has changed the most in the way you write and arrange songs?
VARIALS: With new personnel involved now, it’s a totally different approach. It’s the first record with Skyler and the first record where I (Shane) am composing and arranging the songs, although I think “feel” is more important to us these days. So as a songwriter, I pay attention to the general vibe of the room when presenting ideas.
MU: The recording process has clearly evolved over the years. Compared to your early releases, what has changed the most in the studio, whether in terms of preparation, production, or mindset?
VARIALS: In the past it was easy to overthink certain aspects of the music. Most of those things would be inconsequential to the end listener. More emphasis on what the piece of music is trying to “say”.
MU: This album marks the debut of Skyler Conder as Varials’ new vocalist. How did you first connect with him, and what made it clear he was the right fit for the band?
VARIALS: We’ve known Skyler for ages, back around 2016 or so we met a previous band of his who played with us a few times in Oklahoma. Funny enough, we almost had him join back in 2021 when we were working on our last record. I believe he tracked vocals on 75% or so of SFYTR although we decided against it at the time. But when coming back through the stagnant spot we were stuck in, we knew who it needed to be.
Skyler is an incredible vocalist and frontman and we all mesh very well so we knew he was the right choice this time around.
MU: Skyler brings a distinct intensity and emotional presence to the record. What do you feel he adds to Varials that pushes the band into new territory?
VARIALS: We’ve always respected the fact that Sky comes from the same upbringing and stomping grounds in hardcore that we were all rooted in as well growing up. His presence is unmatched and his energy is as raw as it can get. We’re very happy it all worked out how it did.
MU: Lyrically, Where the Light Leaves explores themes of isolation, mental purgatory, and acceptance. How do those ideas take shape during the writing process?
VARIALS: For me personally, this album was a grieving process all around. I had just lost my older brother in a severe motorcycle accident and had to leave for the studio like two days after so I had zero time to even process what had happened. I remember flying into Philly and just being so out of it and just in silence for a few days and once we got to Michigan and I got in the booth to track, all that anger and confusion and sadness was released and it truly brought this record to life for us. You can hear it in my voice. The hurt was shown in the performance. Nowhere was I ever trying to be “tough” or whatever. I was pissed off and had a lot to say about it. We were all in heavy points of turmoil, frustration, and betrayal while writing this record and I feel as though those feelings translate in all aspects of the music.
MU: Romance II immediately stands out, especially given the impact and lasting success of Romance from In Darkness in 2019. Where did the idea of creating a follow-up come from? Is Romance II a direct continuation in terms of themes and emotional weight, and why did it feel important to revisit that song now? What should fans expect when they hear Romance II for the first time?
VARIALS: For us, we were so 50/50 on this song making the album. Realistically, this was one of the last songs that was even recorded vocally, just solely based on the fact of it being a follow up to one of our biggest tracks to date, but once we finished it up and had a chance to listen to it back, we were all like, “Okay, yeah. This is actually great.” Lyrically though, it’s just about heartbreak, and not being able to live without your other half. I wanted to show more of an emotional side to myself as a vocalist outside of being aggressive and in your face 24/7 as a frontman. Definitely one of my favorites on the album.
MU: In recent years, metalcore has experienced a strong resurgence, especially with a renewed focus on brutality, hardcore attitude, and raw emotion. What does it mean to Varials to be part of that movement?
VARIALS: It’s super rewarding for all of us considering we’ve been playing music for well over a decade, and just being able to see the metal community grow into what it is right now is such a beautiful and awesome thing to be able to witness. I truly think it’s only going to get better over the course of the next five to ten years without a doubt.
MU: Varials have always balanced crushing heaviness with atmosphere and groove. How did you approach expanding those textures on this album without losing the band’s hardcore roots?
VARIALS: I think going into writing this album it just came naturally. This band has always been able to hold up its end of the bargain in being heavy and straight to the point, which I feel most people can appreciate, but with this record we wanted to push it even further, which I feel like we did.
MU: Looking back over your entire career so far, what stands out as the most memorable show you’ve played, whether for personal reasons, the atmosphere, or a defining moment for the band?
VARIALS: Top three I would say are the first time we played Warped Tour, Bloodaxe Fest in Japan, and the Danny Wimmer festivals. Also the Bleeding music video shoot/show. All just very surreal moments.
MU: When you think about Varials five years from now, what parts of Where the Light Leaves do you hope will still define the band moving forward?
VARIALS: Coming into this band and joining it was a very stressful thing for me. I had to fill these shoes and I was nervous people wouldn’t like it, but I knew from the start what I needed to do and what my purpose was here. I wanted to remind people why they fell in love with this band ten plus years ago while introducing a fresh vibe at the same time, and I think we executed that as perfectly as we could. I hope with the release of the album it will live on just as Pain Again and In Darkness did. I’m looking forward to finally being able to unveil it to the world.
MU: We know your visit to Québec is still fairly recent, with your show there in February 2025, but are there already plans or discussions in place for a return in 2026?
VARIALS: Not currently that we can announce or talk about, but we plan to be back in Canada as soon as possible.
MU: Before we wrap up, thank you for taking the time to speak with us. As Where the Light Leaves is released into the world, what message would you like to leave with longtime fans and those discovering Varials for the first time?
VARIALS: We hope this album does what it was intended to do not only for our fans, but for ourselves as well. Thank you to everyone who has stuck around this far, and we cannot wait for what’s next to come. For all the newcomers, keep up, because we don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.
