Entrevue avec Danny Drouin – Repelledeath
L’aube des jours clairs
C’est le 15 février 2024 que Repelledeath sortait son premier album éponyme de 8 chansons. Après les opinions divergentes sur le produit final, Danny Drouin, chanteur du band, s’entretient avec Evans Brouillette sur le sujet et sur l’avenir du groupe.
MU : Pour les personnes qui ne vous connaissent pas, peux-tu nous dire qui sont Repelledeath?
Danny Drouin : Repelledeath c’est un band de Québec qui a commencé en août 2023. Nous faisons du 80s thrash metal. C’est le seul style qui est resté fidèle et authentique. Il y a tellement de sous-genres maintenant, que c’est difficile de conserver un style en particulier. Si j’ai une suggestion à faire à ces personnes : « Écoute pas notre premier album, attends le deuxième. Écoute les lives. »
MU : Qu’est-ce qu’il s’est passé avec le premier album?
Danny Drouin : Le premier album est sorti trop rapidement. Nous n’avions pas l’équipement nécessaire. Pour te donner une idée, j’ai enregistré ma voix avec un micro de drum. Nous sommes déçus du résultat. Depuis, nous avons le matériel adéquat.
MU : Quelle est la ligne directrice musicale de Repelledeath?
Danny Drouin : Comme j’ai mentionné, définitivement le thrash metal des années 80. Je tiens à ce que ça reste ainsi. Mais tout en gardant cette direction, nous voulons ajouter des éléments de power metal, death metal et de black metal. J’ai une voix qui peut aller chercher plusieurs styles, les gars et moi voulons essayer de la rentabiliser au maximum.
MU : Est-ce que les membres présents sont aussi les membres fondateurs?
Danny Drouin : Nous en sommes à notre 5e bassiste, depuis le début du band (rires). Tous de bons musiciens. Donc, Marc, Marc-Antoine et moi sommes là depuis le commencement. D’une façon, Repelledeath, c’est une famille. Nous sommes quatre gars qui se connaissaient avant le début, amis et/ou collègues. La chimie passe très bien entre nous. Nous avons une bonne communication et tout est dans le respect mutuel.
MU : Quel est ton (votre) rêve pour le groupe?
Danny Drouin : Le désir de voyager outre-Atlantique pour faire des gros shows avec des grands noms du style, comme Annihilator, Exodus ou Kreator.
MU : Nous pouvons remarquer plusieurs clin d’œil au cinéma dans le titre de vos chansons et même sur votre drapeau sur scène. Quelle place l’art cinématographique prend-t-elle dans le groupe?
Danny Drouin : Nous nous identifions comme des représentants de la culture pop de la génération X. Nous sommes tous des fans de cinéma dans le band. Nous voulons mettre de l’avant des films qui ont marqué une génération. Justement, sur le prochain album, nous allons continuer dans la même lignée, comme pour la chanson An American Werewolf In London.
MU : Alors, il y a un autre album en route? Quand pensez-vous qu’il sera disponible?
Danny Drouin : (rires) C’est la troisième fois que nous le recommençons. Si tout va bien, il sortira en octobre 2025. Et il s’appellera Repelledeath 2, on ne se casse pas la tête pour chercher des titres à nos albums. Il commencera avec des passes power, puis death et terminera en black, tout en conservant le son thrash. L’écriture de Repelledeath 3 est déjà débutée aussi. Nous allons avoir une nouvelle affiche avec un Jean-Claude Van Damme cyborg aussi.
MU : Malgré tout, dirais-tu que les choses se passent bien pour Repelledeath?
Danny Drouin : Oui! Nous sommes vraiment contents. Nous avons plusieurs concerts de bookés déjà. Notre prochain show est au Café Rock Le Stage à Trois-Rivières, le 27 septembre 2025.
MU : Merci Danny pour ton temps! Tu as un mot de la fin pour conclure l’entrevue?

The Dawn of Clear Days
On February 15, 2024, Repelledeath released their self-titled debut album with 8 songs. After receiving mixed opinions on the final product, singer Danny Drouin sat down with Evans Brouillette to discuss the matter and the future of the band.
MU: For those who don’t know you, can you tell us who Repelledeath is?
Danny Drouin: Repelledeath is a band from Quebec City that started in August 2023. We play 80s thrash metal. It’s the only style that has remained faithful and authentic. There are so many subgenres now that it’s hard to stick to just one in particular. If I had one suggestion for people: “Don’t listen to our first album, wait for the second one. Listen to the live shows.”
MU: What happened with the first album?
Danny Drouin: The first album came out too quickly. We didn’t have the proper equipment. To give you an idea, I recorded my vocals with a drum mic. We were disappointed with the result. Since then, we’ve got the right gear.
MU: What’s Repelledeath’s musical direction?
Danny Drouin: Like I said, definitely 80s thrash metal. I want it to stay that way. But while keeping that direction, we also want to add elements of power metal, death metal, and black metal. I’ve got a voice that can reach different styles, so the guys and I want to make the most of it.
MU: Are the current members also the founding members?
Danny Drouin: We’re on our 5th bassist since the beginning of the band (laughs). All of them great musicians. So, Marc, Marc-Antoine, and I have been there since the start. In a way, Repelledeath is a family. We’re four guys who already knew each other, friends and/or colleagues. The chemistry flows really well between us. We have good communication and everything is built on mutual respect.
MU: What’s your dream for the band?
Danny Drouin: To travel across the Atlantic to play big shows with big names in the genre, like Annihilator, Exodus, or Kreator.
MU: We can notice several nods to cinema in your song titles and even on your stage banner. What place does cinema have in the band?
Danny Drouin: We identify ourselves as representatives of Gen X pop culture. We’re all movie fans in the band. We want to highlight films that marked a generation. On the next album, we’ll keep going in the same direction, like with the song An American Werewolf In London.
MU: So, there’s another album in the works? When do you think it will be out?
Danny Drouin: (laughs) This is the third time we’ve started it over. If all goes well, it will be out in October 2025. And it will be called Repelledeath 2. We don’t rack our brains looking for album titles. It’ll start with power metal parts, then death, and end in black, all while keeping the thrash sound. Writing for Repelledeath 3 has already started too. We’ll also have a new banner featuring a cyborg Jean-Claude Van Damme.
MU: Despite everything, would you say things are going well for Repelledeath?
Danny Drouin: Yes! We’re really happy. We’ve already booked several shows. Our next gig is at Café Rock Le Stage in Trois-Rivières on September 27, 2025.
