Dernièrement, notre journaliste Marc Desgagné de MetalUniverse.net a réalisé une entrevue avec le jeune groupe de death metal mélodique de Vancouver, KAYAS. Ces derniers ont lancé leur premier album, intitulé By The Moon and the Stars, le 2 août 2024. On y retrouve des mélodies et un rythme parfois proches du blackened death metal, avec une atmosphère sombre rappelant Kalmah ou Insomnium. Nous discutons de cette nouvelle offrande, qui traite de nombreux sujets liés à la nature et aux ressources.

MU : Tout d’abord, une question simple, d’où vient le nom Kayas ?
Kayas : Le nom Kayas est inspiré du mot cri kayâs, qui signifie « il y a longtemps. » Il peut être utilisé au début d’une histoire, comme « il était une fois. » Pour nous, une grande partie de la musique consiste à raconter des histoires, donc cela a vraiment résonné avec nous.
MU : Votre nouvel album By the Moon and the Stars sort le 2 août. Que représente ce voyage pour vous avant sa sortie ?
Kayas : Ce voyage a été long et rempli d’obstacles, donc nous sommes vraiment excités de sortir enfin notre premier album. Nous avions prévu de commencer l’enregistrement au début de 2020, puis la pandémie est arrivée, et depuis, il semblait toujours y avoir autre chose qui nous retardait. Maintenant, nous avons hâte de partager cet album et de travailler sur de nouvelles musiques.
MU : Comment votre son a-t-il évolué depuis vos débuts jusqu’à ce premier album complet ?
Kayas : Nous ne pensons pas que cela ait beaucoup changé depuis le début. Toutes les 6 chansons de notre premier concert en 2018 sont sur l’album, ainsi que les 4 que nous avons écrites au cours des deux années suivantes, donc notre son est resté assez constant jusqu’à présent.
MU : Comment s’est passé le processus d’enregistrement de l’album ? Depuis combien de temps travaillez-vous sur ce matériel ?
Kayas : L’enregistrement a pris beaucoup de temps et a été assez fragmenté. Nous avons en fait commencé l’enregistrement en mai 2022 avec trois jours de batterie à Echoplant Studios à Port Coquitlam. C’était un défi pour Weston de finir 10 chansons, car c’était sa première expérience d’enregistrement d’album. Heureusement, David Ziehr a rendu le processus beaucoup plus facile – un grand merci à lui ! Nous avons enregistré toutes les guitares et la basse nous-mêmes à la maison et avons pu faire les voix au travail de Devan, où il y avait une cabine d’isolation sonore utilisée pour les tests de dispositifs. Nous avons ensuite tout envoyé à Victor Hugo Targino, qui a réamplifié les cordes et s’est occupé de tout le mixage et du mastering.
MU : Quelle chanson de By the Moon and the Stars a été la plus difficile à composer et pourquoi ?
Kayas : Terminus. C’était l’une des dernières chansons que nous avons écrites et c’est la plus différente. Elle est beaucoup plus atmosphérique et n’a pas vraiment de structure de chanson conventionnelle, donc assembler les morceaux a été un peu plus difficile.
MU : Concernant « Reflections in the Water, » vous avez mentionné être inspirés par la beauté sauvage du nord-ouest Pacifique. Dans quelle mesure cet aspect se reflète-t-il dans les paroles du groupe en général ?
Kayas : Plusieurs des paroles sont inspirées par l’émerveillement du nord-ouest Pacifique. « Reflections » capture la puissance que nous ressentons lorsque nous nous connectons à la nature. Debout au sommet d’une montagne, au bord d’un lac, au cœur des arbres ou en regardant les étoiles, il y a quelque chose de revigorant dans ces moments. « The Harvester » parle de la récolte de pommes de pin dans la pittoresque vallée de Skimikin, et « Tempest » exprime la puissance d’un orage.
MU : Quelle chanson représente le mieux l’esprit de l’album, selon vous ?
Kayas : Reflections in the Water. Elle inclut tous les aspects présents dans les autres chansons et se veut à la fois inspirante et puissante.
MU : Pouvez-vous parler des thèmes de la nature et de la fantaisie présents dans certaines chansons de l’album ? Y en a-t-il une en particulier qui a une signification spéciale ?
Kayas : Pour la fantaisie, The Grand Magus a été inspirée par Magic: The Gathering. Les décors sont géniaux et l’idée d’avoir différents plans et des êtres capables de voyager entre eux est vraiment cool. La chanson parle d’un planeswalker qui se rend dans différents plans et fait ce qu’il veut.
MU : Comment avez-vous équilibré les mouvements mélodiques triomphants avec les voix dures et écrasantes ? Est-il difficile de trouver le bon équilibre ?
Kayas : Pour nous, l’essentiel est la musique, et les voix sont plus une addition pour accentuer le tout et servir de vecteur pour les paroles. Pour les voix, nous adoptons une approche du « moins c’est plus. »

MU : Comment avez-vous travaillé les harmonies de guitare dans les chansons de l’album ? Des chansons comme « The Winter Curse » et « Lightless » commencent par des moments forts de guitare.
Kayas : Généralement, les mélodies commencent par essayer de transmettre un état d’esprit où nous choisissons quelques notes qui le capturent. Ensuite, il s’agit de remplir ce qui vient ensuite, de voir où vont les notes et ce qui crée plus de mouvement ou se résout fortement. Parfois, l’inspiration initiale vient d’autres choses que nous avons entendues, que nous reconstruisons pour qu’elles sonnent comme nous pensons qu’elles devraient se dérouler.
MU : Si « Lightless » a des éléments de black metal, « The Harvester » offre une touche de death metal mélodique suédois. Qu’est-ce qui distingue le plus votre son, selon vous ?
Kayas : Nous dirions que nous sommes plus du côté du death metal mélodique, mais nous avons définitivement beaucoup d’influences black metal. Un élément clé de notre son est de construire sur une ligne mélodique avec l’harmonie et d’autres variations (comme le downpicking, le trem picking, les lignes de lead). C’est un excellent moyen de garder les passages familiers et unifiés tout en développant la chanson.
MU : Vous parlez souvent de la nature, de la terre et des voyages. Comment voyez-vous la relation entre les humains et la nature dans 50 ans ?
Kayas : Nous espérons que les humains ne prendront pas la terre pour acquise et que nous ne continuerons pas à détruire notre environnement naturel. Pour l’instant, nous essayerons d’en profiter et de faire notre part pour le préserver.
MU : S’il y a une chose que vous aimeriez transmettre à vos fans et auditeurs à travers votre musique, quelle serait-elle ?
Kayas : Honnêtement, s’amuser, être soi-même et se sentir en puissance.
MU : Quels sont vos projets pour le reste de l’année ? Y a-t-il de nouvelles vidéos à attendre ?
Kayas : Nous ferons un concert de lancement d’album le 5 octobre à Vancouver et nous nous rendrons également à Edmonton et Calgary. Nous prévoyons également de travailler sur de nouvelles musiques.

Recently, our journalist Marc Desgagné from MetalUniverse.net conducted an interview with the young melodic death metal band from Vancouver, KAYAS. They released their debut album, By The Moon and the Stars, on August 2, 2024. The album features melodies and rhythms that sometimes lean towards blackened death metal, with a darker atmosphere reminiscent of Kalmah or Insomnium. We discuss this new offering, which covers numerous topics related to nature and resources.
MU: First of all, a simple question, where does the name Kayas come from?
Kayas: The name Kayas was inspired by the Cree word kayâs which means “a long time ago.” It can be used at the beginning of telling a story similar to “once upon a time.” For us a large part of music is telling stories so that really resonated with us.
MU: Your new album « By the Moon and the Stars » is coming out on August 2nd. What does this journey mean to you leading up to its release?
Kayas: This journey has been a long one with a lot of obstacles so we’re really excited to be finally releasing our debut album. We had planned to start recording at the beginning of 2020 and then the pandemic happened, and since then there always seemed to be something else coming up for us. Now, we look forward to sharing this album and working on new music.
MU: How has your sound evolved from your beginnings to this first full-length album?
Kayas: We don’t feel it’s really changed much from the beginning. All 6 of the songs from our first show in 2018 are on the album along with the 4 we wrote over the next 2 years so our sound’s stayed pretty consistent so far.
MU: How was the recording process for the album? How long have you been working on this material?
Kayas: Recording took us a long time and was pretty broken up. We actually started recording all the way back in May 2022 when we did 3 days of drums at Echoplant Studios in Port Coquitlam. It was a challenge for Weston to get 10 songs done since it was his first album recording experience. Thankfully, David Ziehr made the process a lot easier – big props to him! We recorded all the guitars and bass ourselves at home, and were able to do the vocals at Devan’s work as they had a sound isolation booth used for device testing. Then we sent everything over to Victor Hugo Targino who reamped the strings and did all the mixing and mastering.
MU: Which song on « By the Moon and the Stars » was the most difficult to compose and why?
Kayas: Terminus. That one was one of the last songs we wrote and is the most different. It’s a lot more atmospheric and doesn’t really have a conventional song structure so fitting things together was a bit more challenging.
MU: Regarding « Reflections in the Water, » you mentioned being inspired by the wild beauty of the Pacific Northwest. How much does this aspect reflect in the band’s lyrics in general?
Kayas: Quite a few of the lyrics are inspired by the wonder of the Pacific Northwest. Reflections captures the power we experience when connecting with nature. Standing on the top of a mountain, at the edge of a lake, being deep in the trees, or gazing up at the stars. There’s just something invigorating about those moments. The Harvester is about picking pine cones in the scenic Skimikin Valley, and Tempest conveys the power of a thunderstorm.
MU: Which song best represents the spirit of the album, in your opinion?
Kayas: Reflections in the Water. It includes all the aspects that are present in the other songs and aims to be uplifting and powerful.
MU: Can you talk about the themes of nature and fantasy present in some of the album’s songs? Is there one in particular that holds special significance?
Kayas: For fantasy, The Grand Magus was inspired by Magic the Gathering. The settings are great and the idea of having different planes and beings that are able to travel between them is really cool. The song is about a planeswalker going to different planes and doing as they will.
MU: How did you balance the triumphant melodic movements with crushing harsh vocals? Is it difficult to find the right balance?
Kayas: For us, most of the focus is on the music and the vocals are more of an addition to accent everything and act as a vessel for the lyrics. With vocals, we take a “less is more” approach.
MU: How did you work on the guitar harmonies in the album’s songs? Songs like « The Winter Curse » and « Lightless » start with strong guitar moments.
Kayas: Usually the melodies start from trying to convey a frame of mind where we pick a few notes that capture it. Then it becomes a task of trying to fill in what comes next, seeing where the notes go, and what creates more movement or resolves strongly. Sometimes the initial inspiration comes from other things we’ve heard where we’ll reconstruct them to sound the way we think they should flow.
MU: If « Lightless » has some black metal elements, « The Harvester » offers a touch of Swedish melodic death metal. What do you think distinguishes your sound the most?
Kayas: We would say we are more on the melodic death metal side, but we’ve definitely got a lot of black metal influences. A key thing for our sound is building upon a melody line with the harmony and other variations (like downpicking, trem picking, lead lines). It’s a great way to keep passages familiar and unified while developing the song.
MU: You often talk about nature, the earth, and travel. How do you see the relationship between humans and nature 50 years from now?
Kayas: We hope that humans won’t take the earth for granted, and that we won’t keep destroying our natural environment. For now, we’ll try to enjoy it and do our part to preserve it.
MU: If there is one thing you would like to convey to your fans and listeners through your music, what would it be?
Kayas: Honestly, having fun, being yourself, and feeling empowered.
MU: What are your plans for the rest of the year? Any new videos to expect?
Kayas: We’ll be doing an album release show on October 5th in Vancouver and are making it over to Edmonton and Calgary as well. We also plan to work on some new music.
