La formation mélodique danoise Withering Surface a choisi d’immortaliser une version captée en direct de ce classique, un titre qui a profondément marqué leur histoire. « Under A Serpent Sun » est une pièce que le groupe a souvent interprétée sur scène à la fin des années 90 et au début des années 2000, rendant cette relecture aussi naturelle que chargée de sens.
« À l’époque où nous avons formé Withering Surface, j’ai découvert At The Gates », raconte Allan Tvedebrink, membre fondateur, compositeur et guitariste du groupe. « Un an plus tard, ils sortaient Slaughter Of The Soul, qui demeure encore aujourd’hui dans mon top 3 de tous les temps. Les autres albums de cette liste changent parfois, mais Slaughter Of The Soul reste toujours. C’est un disque intemporel, parfait… tout comme l’héritage d’At The Gates. Leur influence sur moi, sur notre band et sur tout le genre est immense. Il était évident pour nous de reprendre Under A Serpent Sun lors de nos concerts dans les années 90, et tout aussi évident d’y retourner aujourd’hui pour en enregistrer une version live en hommage à Tomas Lindberg, qui nous a tragiquement quittés le mardi 16 octobre. Tompa va nous manquer pour toujours, lui et son énergie incroyable, mais nous garderons à jamais sa musique et son inspiration avec nous. »

We are pleased to present this song exclusively on MetalUniverse.net. Today, we unveil the brand new official video from Withering Surface for their live cover of « Under A Serpent Sun », a heartfelt tribute to Tomas « Tompa » Lindberg of the legendary At The Gates, who passed away on October 16.
The Danish melodic death metal band Withering Surface chose to immortalize a live rendition of this classic, a track that has played a significant role in their history. “Under A Serpent Sun” is a song the band frequently performed on stage in the late 90s and early 2000s, making this revisit both natural and deeply meaningful.
“When we formed Withering Surface, I discovered At The Gates,” says Allan Tvedebrink, founding member, composer and guitarist of the band. “One year later, they released Slaughter Of The Soul, which remains to this day in my top three albums of all time. The other records in that list may change from time to time, but Slaughter Of The Soul stays. It’s timeless, it’s perfect… just like the legacy of At The Gates. Their influence on me, on our band, and on the entire genre is immense. It was obvious for us to cover Under A Serpent Sun during our shows in the 90s, and just as obvious to revisit it now and record a live version as a tribute to Tomas Lindberg, who tragically left us on Tuesday, October 16. We will forever miss Tompa—his presence and his incredible energy—but we will always carry his music and inspiration with us going forward.”
