À l’occasion de la sortie prochaine de Fire Upon Your Lands, prévue le 15 août 2025 via Napalm Records, Marc Desgagné de MetalUniverse.net s’est entretenu avec Johnny Hedlund, chanteur et bassiste d’Unleashed. Au fil de cette entrevue, il revient sur la trame épique qui traverse leurs derniers albums, le processus de création, l’importance des traditions vikings dans leur identité et leurs projets de tournée, avec l’espoir de revoir bientôt leurs fans québécois.

MU : Votre nouvel album Fire Upon Your Lands sortira le 15 août 2025 via Napalm Records. Qu’est-ce que les fans peuvent s’attendre à entendre, tant sur le plan sonore que thématique, dans ce 15e chapitre d’Unleashed ?
Johnny Hedlund : Ils peuvent s’attendre à un nouvel album d’Unleashed frais et dynamique, avec des chansons mémorables qui restent fidèles aux racines depuis 1989. Sur le plan thématique, nous suivons toujours les guerriers du Midgard dans leur quête et leur chasse au White Christ. C’est la même trame narrative que sur les six albums précédents.
MU : L’album poursuit l’histoire de No Sign Of Life. Quelle importance l’univers d’Odalheim a-t-il eu dans la construction de l’identité d’Unleashed au fil des ans ?
Johnny Hedlund : Je dirais que c’est l’inverse. Les paroles d’Unleashed sont ancrées dans le passé, le présent et le futur des traditions et valeurs vikings. Le monde d’Odalheim est une histoire futuriste sur les guerriers du Midgard et leur lutte contre White Christ. Beaucoup de choses racontées dans cette trame sont similaires aux paroles d’Unleashed au fil des ans, mais bien sûr, il faut maintenir une certaine cohérence dans le récit.
MU : Des titres comme To My Only Son et Hold Your Hammers High! semblent à la fois épiques et profondément chargés d’émotion. Était-il important pour vous de transmettre non seulement de la puissance, mais aussi de la vulnérabilité ?
Johnny Hedlund : Merci pour ces mots ! Je dirais qu’on ne peut pas avoir l’un sans l’autre. Si vous devez être fort et puissant, il faut se demander pourquoi et pour qui. Je doute que ce soit seulement pour vous-même ; c’est probablement pour votre famille, vos amis ou vos proches. C’est ce pour quoi les guerriers du Midgard se battent, ainsi que pour leur mode de vie. Mais bien sûr, la puissance et la force doivent surpasser le côté émotionnel si l’on veut vraiment l’emporter dans la bataille de la vie. C’est ce que j’essaie d’apporter à nos guerriers du monde. Ce sera à eux de juger si j’ai réussi.
MU : Fire Upon Your Lands allie agressivité brute et profondeur cinématographique. Comment avez-vous abordé la production pour capturer cette dualité ?
Johnny Hedlund : Merci encore. Fredrik m’envoie les chansons en version numérique, généralement 2 à 4 au départ. Je crée et teste les mélodies vocales, puis je vois quelles chansons s’intègrent le mieux dans la trame de l’album. Ensuite, j’écris les paroles. Notre objectif est de créer une bonne dynamique sur tout l’album, car le death metal est une musique très intense qui doit rester variée pour tenir l’auditeur en haleine. On veut éviter la monotonie. On essaie aussi d’apporter de la fraîcheur pour que ce ne soit pas exactement la même chose que l’album précédent. Mais bien sûr, il faut que l’on reconnaisse Unleashed dès la première chanson, sans dévier vers d’autres styles.
MU : Abordez-vous l’écriture différemment aujourd’hui par rapport à vos débuts ?
Johnny Hedlund : Non, je dirais que c’est resté assez similaire sur les 7 ou 8 derniers albums.
MU : Après toutes ces années et ces albums, comment gardez-vous la flamme créative ?
Johnny Hedlund : Il n’y a pas d’autre voie. Je me souviens à peine d’une époque où je ne pensais pas, dès le matin, à créer ou à travailler pour le groupe. Ça fait 37 ans… et ce n’est pas fini ! S’il existe une meilleure façon, dites-le-moi ! Haha. Il y a encore beaucoup à faire et nous ne sommes pas près de nous arrêter.
MU : La stabilité de votre formation depuis le milieu des années 90 est notable. À quel point est-ce crucial pour le groupe ?
Johnny Hedlund : C’est très important à mon avis. Rien qu’au niveau créatif, on sait ce que les membres aiment, donc on se concentre sur ce qui est pertinent sans perdre des heures sur des idées qui seraient rejetées rapidement. Et quand tout le monde s’implique dans les affaires du groupe, c’est un atout pour son avenir. C’est plus facile à maintenir avec une formation stable, et ça ne devient jamais un one-man show.
MU : Que pouvez-vous nous dire sur le titre Midjardarhaf ? Son nom se démarque.
Johnny Hedlund : Midjardarhaf est le mot islandais pour désigner la mer Méditerranée. Dans l’histoire, les guerriers du Midgard sont récupérés au port de Haïfa après des années de guerre et une longue campagne. Ils reprennent la mer pour rentrer à Svithiod, sur les rivages de Birka.
MU : Les pochettes et les titres reflètent toujours une forte identité nordique. Quelle importance cela a-t-il pour vous personnellement ?
Johnny Hedlund : C’est un mode de vie, et je n’en voudrais pas un autre. Mes paroles reflètent mes pensées et ma vision du monde, profondément ancrées dans les traditions et valeurs vikings.

MU : Après tant d’années, comment voyez-vous l’évolution du death metal et la place d’Unleashed dans cette scène ?
Johnny Hedlund : J’espère que nous avons contribué à cette évolution, et aussi à l’avenir de la scène. Peut-être avons-nous aidé à faire évoluer des thèmes liés aux traditions et valeurs vikings d’une manière qui parle aux gens. C’est en tout cas notre objectif depuis longtemps.
MU : Qu’est-ce qui a inspiré le titre Fire Upon Your Lands ?
Johnny Hedlund : Le titre est bien sûr tiré de l’histoire et des événements qui s’y déroulent. Mais on peut aussi le voir comme une métaphore de la vie quotidienne : si vous vous attaquez aux guerriers du Midgard, il y aura des conséquences. Il y aura le feu sur vos terres ! Tôt ou tard.
MU : La chanson War Comes Again est féroce. Pouvez-vous en dire plus sur ses thèmes ?
Johnny Hedlund : Dans l’histoire, les guerriers du Midgard s’attendent à une autre bataille, juste après la précédente. Mais c’est comme ça que la vie fonctionne : les épreuves et les difficultés reviennent constamment. Il faut s’y préparer, affronter l’ennemi de face, sans retenue. La guerre reviendra toujours ; tout est question de préparation et de courage.
MU : Ça fait un moment que vous n’êtes pas venus à Québec, depuis 2018. Y a-t-il une chance de vous revoir bientôt ?
Johnny Hedlund : Exact, nous devrions être au Canada DÈS DEMAIN ! C’est dommage que ça ne se soit pas produit plus souvent. J’espère que nous aurons bientôt une offre raisonnable pour y revenir.

On the occasion of the upcoming release of Fire Upon Your Lands, scheduled for August 15, 2025 via Napalm Records, Marc Desgagné from MetalUniverse.net sat down with Johnny Hedlund, vocalist and bassist of Unleashed. In this interview, he talks about the epic storyline running through their latest albums, the creative process, the importance of Viking traditions to their identity, and their touring plans — with hopes of seeing their Québec fans again soon.
MU: Your new album Fire Upon Your Lands is set for release on August 15, 2025 via Napalm Records. What can fans expect sonically and thematically from this 15th chapter of Unleashed?
Johnny Hedlund: They can expect a fresh and dynamic new Unleashed album with memorable songs that still keep to the roots since 1989. Thematically we are still with the Midgard Warriors on their journey and hunt for White Christ. The same storyline as on the previous six albums.
MU: The album continues the story of No Sign Of Life. How important is the Odalheim universe in shaping Unleashed’s identity over the years?
Johnny Hedlund: I would say it is the other way around. Unleashed lyrics are rooted in the past, present and future of Viking traditions and values. The World of Odalheim is a future story about the Midgard Warriors and their struggle against White Christ. Much of what is said in the storyline is really the same as Unleashed lyrics over the years although of course this is a storyline that needs to be kept on track so to speak.
MU: Songs like To My Only Son and Hold Your Hammers High! sound deeply emotional as well as epic. Was it important for you to convey not just power, but also vulnerability?
Johnny Hedlund: Thank you for those words! I’d say you can’t have one without the other. If you need to be powerful and strong, then you have to ask yourself the questions why? And for whom? I doubt the answer is that you need to be strong only for yourself but likely for family, friends or kin or all of them. This is what the Midgard Warriors are fighting for as well as their way of life that is on the line here. But of course, the power and strength need to be stronger than the emotional side if we are to actually prevail in the battle of life. That is what I try to bring to our warriors of the world. They will be the judge if I actually succeeded or not.
MU: Fire Upon Your Lands features both raw aggression and cinematic depth. How did you approach the production process to capture this duality?
Johnny Hedlund: Thank you once again. Fredrik sends the songs to me digitally, normally 2-4 songs at first. I create and test vocal melodies and see which songs fit to what place on the album storyline-wise so to speak. After that is done, I do the lyrics. Our aim is to create a good dynamic all the way through the album since death metal really is very intense music and needs to be a bit dynamic to get through well in our opinion. You want to be able to listen to the whole album and not sort of stop listening because it gets too much the same beat all the time etc. We also try to bring some new freshness to it to keep it new and not the exact same as the previous album. But of course, we still want to sound Unleashed from the first song and on… not to stray away to other styles etc.
MU: Do you approach the songwriting process differently now than in your early days?
Johnny Hedlund: No, I’d say it has been pretty much the same on the past 7-8 albums really.
MU: After so many years and albums, how do you keep the creative flame burning?
Johnny Hedlund: There is no other way. I hardly recall how life was waking up in the morning and not thinking about things to create and do with the band. I mean… some 37 years now… and counting. If there is a better way… let me know! Haha. There is much to do yet and we ain’t stopping anytime near soon.
MU: One thing that stands out with Unleashed is the lineup stability since the mid-90s. How crucial has that consistency been for the band?
Johnny Hedlund: It has been very important in my estimation. Just looking at the creative process, we know what the members like and therefore you can concentrate on what is real and not spend hours that will be rejected in seconds. Also when everyone in the band helps out with all matters that concern the band it is very helpful to the future of the band. This is easier to keep up when you have a steady lineup. It never becomes a one-man show.
MU: What can you tell us about the track Midjardarhaf? Its title stands out.
Johnny Hedlund: Midjardarhaf is the Mediterranean Sea in Icelandic. In the storyline, the Midgard Warriors get picked up at the Haifa Pier after years of war and a long campaign. They head out once again into the open sea and head home to Svithiod and the Birka shores.
MU: The artwork and titles always reflect a strong Norse identity. How important is this cultural anchor for you personally?
Johnny Hedlund: It is a way of life. And there isn’t another one I’d ever prefer so it is important of course. My lyrics reflect my thoughts and views of the world. And they are rooted in the Viking traditions and values.
MU: After so many years in the scene, how do you view the evolution of death metal and Unleashed’s place within it?
Johnny Hedlund: I hope we have contributed to it and also to the future of the scene. Perhaps we’ve done some good for things to evolve around the Viking traditions and values in a way that makes sense to people. At least that has been the aim for many years.
MU: What inspired the title Fire Upon Your Lands?
Johnny Hedlund: The title is of course taken from the storyline and the events that occur there. But you can also see it (just like many of the lyrics) as a translation to your everyday life. If you mess around with the Midgard Warriors, there will be consequences. There will be fire upon your lands! Sooner or later.
MU: The song War Comes Again is ferocious. Can you tell us more about its themes?
Johnny Hedlund: In the storyline the Midgard Warriors expect just another battle just as the previous one ended. But this is how life really is. All kinds of hardships and trouble will in fact come your way. All the time. You need to be prepared for it. And face the enemy head on. No holding back. War will always come again, it is just a matter of preparations and to stand up straight and fight back. There is no other way.
MU: It’s been a while since your last visit to Québec City in 2018. Any chance we’ll see Unleashed return soon?
Johnny Hedlund: Correct, we should be in Canada like TOMORROW! It is a shame it didn’t happen more. I hope we can get a reasonable offer very soon!
