Les chaînes du passé : La Corriveau sous un nouveau jour
Dans La Corriveau de Gabriel Thériault, la célèbre légende québécoise prend une tournure moderne et glaçante. Ce Conte Interdit nous plonge dans une intrigue où meurtres diffusés sur le Dark Web et hors de celui-ci, enquête policière et fascination macabre s’entrelacent. Il faut suivre, mais surtout s’accrocher! L’histoire s’articule autour de plusieurs personnages : un tueur insaisissable, un policier dépassé par l’horreur, une vidéaste troublante obsédée par les tortures du passé et une victime dont le supplice révèle une humanité pure et authentique. J’ai vécu une véritable montagne russe d’émotions, j’oscillais sans cesse entre dégoût, tristesse et colère. J’avais entendu dire que ce Conte Interdit faisait partie des plus éprouvants, je crois que c’est exactement pour cette raison : TOUTES les émotions y passent.
Parmi tous ces personnages, c’est Charles, le père de famille, qui m’a le plus touchée. Prisonnier d’un destin cruel et d’un passé tragique, il m’a inspiré une empathie profonde tout au long de ma lecture. Quant à Clio, cette femme énigmatique, fait naitre chez le lecteur des émotions pouvant être contradictoires, elle incarne merveilleusement le mystère entourant la véritable légende de la Corriveau. Victime? Bourreau? Complice? On ne sait plus quoi penser. Son intérêt pour l’histoire a aussi résonné avec l’enseignante en moi, ajoutant une couche supplémentaire à mon appréciation de cette œuvre.
Au fil des pages, Thériault brouille les frontières entre bourreau et martyr, nous forçant, en tant que lecteur, à s’interroger sur le lien entre cette violence contemporaine et la légende de La Corriveau. Cette réflexion se complexifie d’autant plus que l’on suit plusieurs personnages à la fois, y compris des victimes, dont les supplices sont décrits avec une brutalité qui met nos nerfs à rude épreuve dès le début du roman. Moi qui suis une passionnée de la légende originale, j’ai pris un malin plaisir à jouer à la détective en cherchant des parallèles entre le mythe et l’univers sombre imaginé par l’auteur. Arriverez-vous à les repérer aussi?
C’est une réécriture audacieuse qui, derrière l’effroi, explore les méandres de la nature humaine. Merci Gabriel Thériault!

In La Corriveau by Gabriel Thériault, the famous Québécois legend takes a modern and chilling turn. This Conte Interdit plunges us into a world where murders are broadcast on the Dark Web and beyond, intertwining a police investigation with a morbid fascination. You’ll have to keep up—and brace yourself! The story revolves around several characters: an elusive killer, a detective overwhelmed by horror, a disturbing videographer obsessed with past tortures, and a victim whose suffering reveals a raw and authentic humanity. Reading this felt like an emotional rollercoaster, constantly swinging between disgust, sorrow, and anger. I had heard that this Conte Interdit was one of the most harrowing, and now I understand why—it makes you feel everything.
Among all the characters, Charles, the devoted father, moved me the most. Trapped by a cruel fate and a tragic past, he evoked deep empathy in me throughout the book. As for Clio, this enigmatic woman stirs contradictory emotions in the reader, brilliantly embodying the mystery surrounding the true legend of La Corriveau. Victim? Executioner? Accomplice? You no longer know what to think. Her fascination with history also resonated with the teacher in me, adding yet another layer to my appreciation of this work.
As the pages turn, Thériault blurs the lines between tormentor and martyr, forcing us, as readers, to question the connection between this contemporary violence and the legend of La Corriveau. This reflection deepens as we follow multiple perspectives, including victims, whose suffering is described with brutal intensity from the very first chapters. As someone passionate about the original legend, I thoroughly enjoyed playing detective, searching for parallels between the myth and the dark universe crafted by the author.
