Issu de la dynamique scène musicale de Vancouver, DOWN THE LEES a débuté initialement en tant que projet solo dirigé par Laura Lee Schultz, reconnue pour sa participation dans des groupes tels que Queazy, Skinjobs et New Years Resolution. Au fil du temps, le projet s’est transformé en un groupe à part entière, vantant une discographie étendue comprenant trois albums, un EP et de nombreux singles explorant une gamme variée de genres incluant le post-rock, le shoegaze, le hardcore, le slowcore et le no-wave. Leur dernier EP, « Dirt », produit par Jesse Gander de Raincity Recorders, a suscité une anticipation considérable, enrichissant davantage leur portfolio déjà impressionnant.
Dès la chanson « Dirt », on ressent rapidement que le groupe nous fera réellement vivre une expérience. Lourd et planant, mélodique et intense, la multitude d’influences se font entendre très ce premier titre. Ensuite, « Douse » continue sur cette voie, mais l’atmosphère prend une autre tournure avec ces airs plus accessibles et accrocheurs. DOWN THE LEES exploite bien le tout et tente de ne pas tomber dans la surcharge inutile.
D’ailleurs, DOWN THE LEES n’est pas le genre de groupe qui va exploser à tout moment. Il y a de la distorsion, de nombreux changements de rythme, mais la voix posée de Laura Lee Schultz sur la majorité de l’album nous guide. Si la majorité des titres ont des passages heavy – comme c’est le cas au milieu de « Dissolve », on peut tomber aussi dans le mélodique plus calme avec « Deafening ». Pour terminer le EP, « Since La Vie En Rose » offre un petit peu de tout, même une fin aux sonorités tourmentées.
Enregistrée et mixée par Jesse Gander à Raincity Recorders et masterisée par Blake Bickel à Dynamic Sound Service, leur musique encapsule une fusion d’intensité brute et d’art raffiné. Avec des racines profondes dans le paysage musical éclectique de Vancouver, DOWN THE LEES nous invite à les rejoindre dans ce long périple musical naviguant entre les émotions fortes et une délicatesse parfois troublante.

Hailing from Vancouver’s vibrant music scene, DOWN THE LEES initially began as a solo project led by Laura Lee Schultz, renowned for her participation in bands such as Queazy, Skinjobs and New Years Resolution. Their latest EP, « Dirt », produced by Jesse Gander of Raincity Recorders, has generated considerable anticipation, further enriching their already impressive portfolio.
Right from the song « Dirt », you quickly get the sense that the band are really going to give you an experience. Heavy and soaring, melodic and intense, the multitude of influences can be heard very clearly on this first track. Next, « Douse » continues in this vein, but the atmosphere takes a different turn with its more accessible, catchy tunes. DOWN THE LEES makes the most of everything and tries not to overdo it.
Besides, DOWN THE LEES is not the kind of band that’s going to explode at any moment. There’s some distortion, plenty of rhythm changes, but Laura Lee Schultz’s calm voice guides us through most of the album. While the majority of tracks have heavy passages – as is the case in the middle of « Dissolve » – we can also fall into the calmer melodic with « Deafening ». To round off the EP, « Since La Vie En Rose » offers a little bit of everything, even a tormented-sounding ending.
