Un petit vent de nouveauté souffle à nos volets. La formation danoise Baest dévoilera son quatrième long jeu Colossal, à la mi-août. Un album bien réfléchi, post-pandémial, qui saura égayer votre été autour de la piscine, d’un BBQ ou à la plage. Si vous êtes un fan des styles métalliques de la fin des 80s, je vous conseille de lire ce qui suivra.
Colossal tombe très bien, non pas sans tourner le couteau dans la plaie, puisque le band a de grandes influences tirées du défunt Prince des Ténèbres, le regretté Ozzy. Blague à part, les membres ont déjà dit en entrevue qu’ils font du « Ozzy death metal ». Nous retrouvons des sonorités similaires au heavy du temps de Randy Rhoads, Dokken et Iron Maiden. Oui mais Evans… ce sont des bands de heavy metal ça, il est où le death dans ça ? Je vais répondre par « Connaissez-vous le band Gorefest ? »
On commence l’écoute avec un petit riff très classique à la ZZ Top sur Stormbringer. Quand tu te dis que ça va être un morceau qu’on a déjà entendu, nous nous faisons jeter un rythme gras par-dessus. Ça ne fait pas 20 secondes que l’album est commencé et je headbang déjà… De beaux mid vocals bien maîtrisés, une lead guitare claire, une rythm grasse, une bass très présente et un batteur qui a sûrement brûlé sa cassette de 1984 de Van Halen à force de l’écouter.
On est parti.
Colossus… j’espère que tu n’as pas mangé trop gras ce midi. Ton foie ne pourra pas assimiler toute la matière graisseuse que tu es sur le point de consommer. Une chanson typiquement old school death metal, avec de beaux solos, une distorsion bien présente, bien lourde, bien plus lente que la précédente. Les chansons suivantes conservent les valeurs death n’ roll, toutes groovy, légères et donnant envie de bouger.
À Mouth of the River, nous revenons au OSDM avec plus d’agressivité, je dirais même qu’au tout début, nous pouvons retrouver un peu de Suffocation. Pièce pleine de fougue et contagieuse d’énergie.
Pour Light the Beacons, je n’ai pas trop compris l’intérêt de mettre une piste instrumentale en avant-dernière partie de l’album. Légère, rappelant Rush. Ce qui vient un peu défaire l’impact que la chanson de conclusion aurait pu avoir. Un peu plus technique et plutôt facile d’approche pour les auditeurs qui débutent dans le style metal. De façon générale, il s’agit d’un bel opus, agréable à écouter et assez accessible.

A fresh breeze of novelty is blowing through our shutters. The Danish band Baest will be releasing their fourth full-length album Colossal in mid-August. A well-thought-out, post-pandemial album that’s sure to brighten your summer by the pool, at a BBQ, or on the beach. If you’re a fan of the metallic styles of the late ’80s, I suggest you read on.
Colossal comes at just the right time, though not without twisting the knife a little, as the band draws strong influences from the late Prince of Darkness, the much-missed Ozzy. Joking aside, the members have already said in interviews that they play “Ozzy death metal.” You can hear sounds reminiscent of the heavy era of Randy Rhoads, Dokken, and Iron Maiden. Yes, but Evans… those are heavy metal bands, so where’s the death in that? I’ll answer with, “Do you know the band Gorefest?”
The listening starts with a small, very classic ZZ Top–style riff on Stormbringer. Just when you think it’s going to be a song you’ve already heard before, a fat groove gets thrown on top. Not even 20 seconds into the album and I’m already headbanging… Great mid vocals well controlled, a clear lead guitar, a thick rhythm, a very present bass, and a drummer who probably wore out his 1984 Van Halen cassette from listening to it so much.

Colossus… I hope you didn’t eat anything too greasy for lunch. Your liver won’t be able to handle all the fat you’re about to consume. A typically old-school death metal track, with great solos, a heavy, thick distortion, and much slower than the previous song. The following tracks keep the death ’n’ roll spirit — all groovy, light, and guaranteed to make you move.
On Mouth of the River, we return to OSDM with more aggression — I’d even say that at the very start, you can hear a hint of Suffocation. A track full of fire and contagious energy.
With Light the Beacons, I didn’t quite understand the point of putting an instrumental track in the second-to-last spot on the album. It’s light, reminiscent of Rush, but it somewhat weakens the impact the closing song could have had. A bit more technical and quite easy to approach for listeners new to the metal style. Overall, it’s a fine record, enjoyable to listen to, and fairly accessible.
