Allegaeon, groupe du Colorado formé en 2008, nous dévoile leur septième long jeu, The Ossuary Lens. Un album qui saura faire frémir les fans du band, puisqu’il s’agit du premier album depuis le retour d’Ezra Haynes au chant. Remémorons qu’il avait quitté la formation en 2015, pour revenir 8 ans plus tard. Cela étant dit, sa fougue demeure la même, si ce n’est améliorée.
Allegaeon révèle que chacun des titres est lié au thème de la mort, à sa façon. Par le fait même, les côtés philosophiques et scientifiques (contradictoires, quand même) du groupe demeurent très présents et se transposent harmoniquement avec les compositions. Un attrait spécialement intéressant demeure dans l’insertion de passes de guitare acoustique, même dans les morceaux les plus groovy. Comme il est notamment le cas sur l’introduction Refraction, seulement instrumentale, jouée en crescendo, avec une superbe liaison violente sur la piste suivante.
Une petite touche de fraîcheur mélodique est ajoutée au technical death metal, que nous connaissons bien du band. Des éléments ambiants sont intégrés, donnant l’opportunité aux auditeurs de se recentrer sur eux-mêmes, tout en ne perdant pas le focus durant l’écoute de The Ossuary Lens. Certains moments de chants clairs sont audibles dans Wake Circling Above, une chanson qui a tout pour plaire : technicalité impeccable, changement d’ambiance supporté par la connexion instrumentale, mélancolie et puissance. Une pièce qui tire du tourment onirique, littéralement. Dark Matter Dynamics débute aussi sur une note acoustique et développe sur un air technical melodeath incroyable.
L’aspect technique des partitions est toujours au rendez-vous, avec la quintessence digne d’une lame japonaise. Une progression musicale marquée du groupe est ressentie, un projet mûr et bien tissé.

Allegaeon, a band from Colorado formed in 2008, unveils their seventh full-length album, The Ossuary Lens. An album that will thrill the band’s fans, as it marks the first release since the return of Ezra Haynes on vocals. Let us recall that he left the band in 2015, only to return eight years later. That said, his energy remains the same—if not even better.
Allegaeon reveals that each track is connected to the theme of death, in its own way. In doing so, the philosophical and scientific sides of the band (contradictory, still) remain very present and harmoniously transpose into the compositions. A particularly interesting appeal lies in the inclusion of acoustic guitar passages, even in the grooviest songs. This is notably the case with the instrumental introduction Refraction, played in a crescendo, which flows beautifully into the next track with a violent transition.
A small touch of melodic freshness is added to the technical death metal we know from the band. Ambient elements are incorporated, giving listeners a chance to refocus on themselves without losing concentration while listening to The Ossuary Lens. Some moments of clean vocals can be heard in Wake Circling Above, a song that has everything to please: flawless technicality, shifts in atmosphere supported by instrumental cohesion, melancholy, and power. A track that draws from dreamlike torment—literally. Dark Matter Dynamics also begins with an acoustic note and evolves into an incredible technical melodeath sound.
The technical aspect of the arrangements is still there, with a finesse worthy of a Japanese blade. A marked musical progression is felt from the band—a mature and well-woven project.
