Nos songeurs compagnons finlandais, que sont Swallow the Sun, nous préparent à l’hiver imminent, avec la sortie de leur nouvel album Shining. Cependant, cette fois, produit par Dan Lancaster (reconnu pour, entre autres, Bring Me the Horizon, Blink 182 et Muse), ce qui apporte une nouvelle dynamique au son du quintet.
Tricotant toujours dans la mélancolie de la profondeur des tourments/existentialisme humains, mais avec un côté plus clair, plus brillant mélodiquement. La ligne directrice qui s’est dessinée à l’arrivée de leur EP, The Morning Never Came, en 2003, demeure, par contre, sensiblement la même.
Nous parcourons donc un momentum de 51 minutes, qui vacille étrangement dans la légèreté d’un mélange de doom metal et de death metal mélodique. Les rythmes et ambiances ne sont pas constants, ce qui apporte une complexité au projet. Certains pourraient penser que Shining est le croisement de Dark Tranquillity et de Katatonia. Beaucoup de chants clairs dans la majorité des pièces, quelques apparitions de voix rauques. À l’exception de la chanson Kold, qui intègre ces deux éléments et des « grim growls ».
Le titre évocateur de la pièce suivante, November Dust, parle de lui-même en annonçant profondeur et amertume appréciées. Petite surprise intéressante, les premiers instants de la piste Under the Moon & Sun nous plongent directement dans le côté ambiant de The First Snow du groupe Lustre, absolument plaisant. Somme toute, il ne s’agit pas d’un coup de cœur personnel, m’attendant à quelque chose d’un peu plus rythmé, mais cela demeure du bon travail.

Our reflective Finnish companions, Swallow the Sun, are preparing us for the coming winter with the release of their new album Shining. However, this time, it’s produced by Dan Lancaster (known for his work with Bring Me the Horizon, Blink 182, and Muse), which brings a new dynamic to the quintet’s sound.
Still weaving through the melancholy depths of human turmoil/existentialism, but with a clearer, brighter melodic tone. The guiding line that emerged with the release of their EP The Morning Never Came in 2003 remains, however, largely the same.
We embark on a 51-minute journey, which strangely oscillates between the lightness of a blend of doom metal and melodic death metal. The rhythms and atmospheres are not constant, adding complexity to the project. Some might think that Shining is a mix between Dark Tranquillity and Katatonia. There are plenty of clean vocals in most of the tracks, with a few appearances of harsh vocals. Except for the song Kold, which integrates both elements and some “grim growls.” The evocative title of the following track, November Dust, speaks for itself, offering the expected depth and bitterness. An interesting little surprise, the first moments of the track Under the Moon & Sun plunge us directly into the ambient side of Lustre’s The First Snow, which is absolutely delightful. All in all, it wasn’t a personal favorite, as I was expecting something a bit more rhythmic, but it’s still solid work.
