En cette fin d’année 2025, c’est le moment de dévoiler les différents tops des membres de l’équipe de MetalUniverse.net! Quels sont les albums et les spectacles qui ont le plus retenu leur attention cette année? Quels sont leurs souhaits et attentes pour l’année prochaine? Il y en aura pour tous les goûts!

LES MEILLEURS MOMENTS DE JULIE EN 2025
Ouff! Les palmarès (top) de l’année se suivent et ne se ressemblent pas. Pour 2025, je m’étais promis, après les trois années les plus éprouvantes de ma vie, d’assister au plus grand nombre de concerts et spectacles et événements possibles, suivant mes envies, bien sûr.
Pour 2025, je vais donc vous parler de mes expériences partagées, en quelque sorte, de mes meilleurs moments, souvent passés en très bonne compagnie. Assoyez-vous, j’en ai long à dire et j’aurais pu en dire encore plus long. C’est parti!
Du côté des festivals, il y a le PHOQUE OFF, un petit fest ayant lieu à Québec en février, à des heures indues et dans des lieux peu communs. Ça vaut l’effort et le détour, car on ne sort pas juste tard, on sort aussi de l’ordinaire et des sentiers battus. J’aurai ainsi connu MARIE CÉLESTE, XIA-3, POSTFUN, PEANUT BUTTER SUNDAY, TAXI GIRLS et CHOU. À votre tour de leur prêter l’oreille.
Ensuite il y a le RED BRIDGE FEST, en juin, que j’ai couvert pour la deuxième fois, et ce ne sera pas la dernière. J’y découvre chaque fois des groupes, la plupart du temps punk, d’ici et d’ailleurs, comme la Suède, qui sont nouvellement formés ou qui roulent depuis un bout. Comme PROPAGANDHI. Et je dois ici faire preuve d’une grande humilité car, oui, je connaissais le groupe de nom depuis plusieurs années, mais je n’avais jamais écouté leur matériel… Eh bien c’est chose faite!

Puis il y a ROCK LA CAUZE, en août, un festival que j’apprécie toujours plus d’année en année. Pour la programmation oui, mais aussi pour l’organisation, pour le personnel souvent bénévole, pour l’ambiance et pour les belles rencontres, que ce soit avec la foule ou les groupes. Cette année c’est SKINDRED qui a retenu mon attention, pour leur présence fantastique sur scène.

Enfin il y a toujours ENVOL & MACADAM, dont la réputation n’est vraiment plus à faire. J’en parle chaque année, je le couvre presque chaque année, si vous ne connaissez pas encore, vous manquez le train un peu beaucoup. Tous ces festivals, je les couvre en compagnie d’autres photographes d’autres médias qu’il me fait plaisir de revoir chaque fois.

Du côté des shows, il y a RIVAL SONS et FILTER, qui étaient en première partie de BUSH en mai. Moi et deux collègues photographes on a fait un petit roadtrip à Montréal pour ça. J’avoue que même si je n’avais jamais espéré pouvoir voir FILTER en 30 ans, c’était bien plus RIVAL SONS qui m’intéressait que les autres. Et je n’ai pas été déçue, même s’ils n’ont pas joué ma pièce préférée. S’ils pouvaient venir au FEQ, ça ferait le bonheur de plusieurs, je pense.
Parlant du FEQ, il y a le show de DEF LEPPARD, mon groupe fétiche d’adolescente empotée. C’était en juillet, avec mon fils aîné, je les voyais pour la quatrième fois. Et là non plus je n’ai pas été déçue. Avec DEF LEPPARD, on oublie nos problèmes et on a juste du fun à chanter et à danser. J’en ai besoin, on en a tous besoin.
Aussi au FEQ, il y a HOZIER, un être de lumière généreux et talentueux, dont j’ai partagé l’esprit et la musique avec mon fils puîné, qui était plus en avant dans la foule.
Puis il y a VOLA, en septembre. Un groupe du Danemark que je ne pensais vraiment pas voir si vite à Québec! Et j’en suis bien heureuse, car c’était parfait. Une prestation sans faute, j’ai adoré.
Aussi OPAL IN SKY en septembre, ces fameux jumeaux Opalinsky s’étant fait connaître pour leurs petites folies sur Instagram et leurs steppettes sur scène; aussi LE CLAN DE LA SAVATE en novembre pour leur concept et leur prestation d’Halloween originale; le lendemain, c’était nul autre que TOM MORELLO, de RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE et AUDIOSLAVE, pour une soirée captivante d’histoires et de musique.
Entretemps il y a eu IAMX, fin octobre, avec ma nièce, un moment fort pour moi, car c’est mon artiste Spotify de l’année depuis trois ans. IAMX, c’est Chris Corner, un musicien polyvalent et talentueux, humble et authentique, qui est près de ses fans. Une prestation intime et sans faute ici aussi.
Mention spéciale à IRISH MOUTARDE pour ses partys sans fin de la Saint-Patrick et de Noël. Voir cette belle gang deux fois en un an, ça vous requinque l’humeur!
Je finis avec l’événement de l’année qui n’est pas rock ni metal, COLDPLAY à Toronto. Pourquoi direz-vous? Eh bien parce que ça aura pris plus de 10 ans avant que je puisse réaliser ce rêve de ma sœur de voir le groupe au Canada. Comme vous le savez, COLDPLAY limite ses tournées dans une optique environnementale et présente ses concerts en conséquence.
Donc quand le groupe est venu au pays en 2012, ma sœur a manqué la vente de billets en ligne parce que j’étais en visite chez elle. Vente qui, bien sûr, s’est soldée en environ 20 minutes.
Alors quand on a su que le groupe revenait, on n’a pas niaisé sur le piton comme on dit. Les deux seules dates ayant aussi été soldées en un temps record, le groupe a ajouté deux dates, toujours en juillet.
Ma sœur est donc dans la file d’attente en ligne en octobre 2024, elle réussit à réserver deux billets, mais problème avec la carte de crédit. Elle m’appelle alors que je suis dans une salle d’attente pour un rendez-vous, pour que je lui donne mon numéro de carte de crédit, quel suspense. Pouf, croyez-moi ou non, on réussit à avoir deux billets de parterre pour 336$. Incroyable.
Et ce n’est pas fini. Il a ensuite fallu réserver une chambre d’hôtel à Toronto, se demander comment se rendre en ville et au stade. Je stressais pour rien. Tout s’est parfaitement bien déroulé.
La veille du show, j’étais à celui de HOZIER, je suis revenue chez moi avec une vision d’orage assez incroyable sur Grande-Allée, j’ai préparé mon petit bagage pendant le déluge et j’ai ensuite filé jusque chez ma sœur, deux heures de route.
Le lendemain, on s’est levées tôt, on a pris la route, on est arrivées à temps à l’hôtel et à l’avance au show. Il y avait du monde, mais du monde. L’organisation et les installations se comparent à ce qu’on trouve au FEQ. COLDPLAY, c’est le FEQ à eux seuls.
Il y avait des camions de bouffe, des kiosques de marchandises et une grande roue. On passe une première entrée avec nos billets électroniques, on reçoit nos bracelets lumineux et des lunettes 3D, et on entre dans l’enceinte à ciel ouvert.
Le show est merveilleux. Le son est excellent, les musiciens sont heureux d’être là et ça paraît. L’interaction avec la foule est constante, l’animation est originale, confettis, feux d’artifice, bracelets synchronisés, la foule chante, c’est une vraie communion.
La pleine lune se lève derrière la scène pour illuminer ce tableau, cette tournée nommée Music of the Spheres, pour promouvoir l’album éponyme et celui intitulé Moon Music. Je n’invente rien.
Et je le dis sans hésitation, c’était le show d’une vie. Mais le plus important, c’est que j’ai partagé ce moment et ce roadtrip avec ma sœur. COLDPLAY, c’est son groupe. On n’a qu’une vie, profitons du moment.

JULIE’S BEST OF 2025
Phew! Yearly top lists follow one another and are all different. For 2025, I promised myself, after the three most trying years of my life, to attend as many concerts, shows, and events as possible, following my desires, of course.
So for 2025, I’m going to tell you about my shared experiences, in a way, my best moments, often spent in very good company. Sit down, it’s a long ride, and I could have said even more. So here we go!
As for festivals, there’s PHOQUE OFF, a small fest that takes place in Quebec City in February, at odd hours and in unusual venues. It’s worth the effort and the detour, because you’re not just going out of your ways, you’re also getting away from the ordinary and off the beaten track. That’s how I got to know about MARIE CÉLESTE, XIA-3, POSTFUN, PEANUT BUTTER SUNDAY, TAXI GIRLS, and CHOU. Now it’s your turn to give them a listen.
Then there’s RED BRIDGE FEST in June, which I covered for the second time, and it won’t be the last. Each time, I discover local and foreign bands, mostly punk, that are newly formed or have been around for a while. Like PROPAGANDHI. And I must admit my ignorance here because, yes, I had known the band by name for several years, but I had never listened to their material. Well, now I have!
Then there’s ROCK LA CAUZE in August, a fest that I enjoy more and more every year. Not only for the lineups, but also for the organization, the staff, often volunteers, the ambience, and the wonderful encounters, whether with the crowd or the bands. This year, SKINDRED caught my attention with their fantastic stage presence.
Finally, there’s always ENVOL & MACADAM, whose reputation is well established. I talk about it every year, I cover it almost every year, and if you don’t know it yet, you’re missing out big time. I cover all of these fests with other photographers from other media outlets, whom I’m always happy to see again in the photopit.
As for shows, there’s RIVAL SONS and FILTER, openers for BUSH in May. Two fellow photographers and I took a little road trip to Montreal just for that. I must admit that, even though I never expected to see FILTER in 30 years, I was much more interested in RIVAL SONS than the others. And I wasn’t disappointed, even though they didn’t play my favorite song. If they could come to the FEQ, I think it would make a lot of people happy.
Speaking of the FEQ, there was the DEF LEPPARD show, my favorite band from my awkward teenage years. It was in July, with my eldest son, and I was seeing them for the fourth time. And again, I wasn’t disappointed. DEF LEPPARD makes you forget about your problems and you just have fun singing and dancing. I need that, we all do.
Also at the FEQ was HOZIER, a generous and talented luminous being, whose spirit and music I shared with my other son, who was further forward in the crowd.
Then there was VOLA in September. A band from Denmark that I never thought I’d see so soon in Quebec City! And I’m really glad, because it was perfect. A flawless performance, I loved it.
Also OPAL IN SKY in September, the famous Opalinsky twins who made a name for themselves with their comical antics on Instagram and their tap dancing on stage; also LE CLAN DE LA SAVATE in November for their original conceptual Halloween performance; the next day, it was none other than TOM MORELLO, from RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE and AUDIOSLAVE, for a captivating evening of stories and music.
In between, there was IAMX at the end of October, with my niece, which was a highlight for me, as he’s been my Spotify artist of the year for the past three years. IAMX is Chris Corner, a versatile and talented musician who is humble, authentic, and close to his fans. Another intimate and flawless performance.
Honorable mention to IRISH MOUTARDE for their endless St. Patrick’s Day and Christmas parties. Seeing this funny bunch twice in one year really lifted my spirits!
I’ll finish with the event of the year that isn’t rock or metal, COLDPLAY in Toronto. Why, you ask? Well, because it took more than 10 years to fulfill my sister’s dream of seeing the band in Canada. As you know, COLDPLAY strives to have carbon-neutral tours for environmental reasons and holds concerts accordingly.
So when the band came to Canada in 2012, my sister missed the online ticket sale because I was visiting her. The tickets, of course, sold out in about 20 minutes.
So when we heard that the band was coming back, we didn’t waste time. The only two dates sold out in record time, so the band added two more dates, also in July.
My sister was waiting in line online in October 2024, and she managed to get a hold on two tickets, but there was a problem with her credit card. She called me while I was in a waiting room for an appointment, to give her my credit card number, stressful. Believe it or not, we managed to get two floor tickets for $336. Unbelievable.
Then we had to book a hotel room in Toronto. Would there be any left? And how were we going to get into the city, with the constant traffic, and to the stadium, in the middle of nowhere? I was stressing out for nothing. Everything went well.
The night before the show, I was at HOZIER‘s concert, I came home to an incredible incoming rainstorm over Grande-Allée, packed my small bag during the downpour, and then drove for two hours to my sister’s house.
The next day we got up early, hit the road, and arrived at the hotel on time, ahead of the show. There were lots of people heading toward the venue. It was impressive. The organization and facilities were comparable to what you find at the FEQ. COLDPLAY is the FEQ all by themselves.
There were food trucks, merchandise booths, and a ferris wheel. We passed through the first entrance with our electronic tickets, were given our glow bracelets and 3D glasses, and entered the open-air venue.
The show is wonderful. The sound is excellent, the musicians are happy to be there and it shows, the interaction with the crowd is constant, the entertainment is novel, there is confetti, fireworks, the bracelets are synchronized with the music, the crowd sings along, it’s a real communion.
The full moon rises behind the stage to illuminate this tableau, this tour called Music of the Spheres, promoting the album of the same name and the one called Moon Music. I’m not making this up.
And I can say without hesitation that it was the show of a lifetime. But the most important thing is that I shared this moment and this road trip with my sister. COLDPLAY is her band. We only have one life, so let’s enjoy the moment.
