La tournée A Night of Stories & Music de Tom Morello s’arrête à Québec
Dans le cadre de sa tournée A Night of Stories & Music, Tom Morello s’est arrêté à l’Impérial Bell le dimanche 2 novembre. Retour sur cette soirée hors de l’ordinaire où tous les billets avaient trouvé preneurs.
Bien que j’aie eu la chance d’assister à moult spectacles à l’Impérial, c’était la première fois que j’assistais à une représentation où le parterre était entièrement recouvert de chaises. Cependant, le type de soirée s’y prêtait aisément. Comme le titre de la tournée l’indique, il s’agissait d’un mélange entre des histoires de Tom Morello et des morceaux principalement tirés de son répertoire acoustique The Nightwatchman.
C’est donc devant une scène épurée, avec simplement quatre guitares, une petite table, un pied de micro et une bonne quantité de pédales que Tom Morello s’est présenté un peu après 20 h. Après avoir joué Keep Going, il nous a livré un inspirant discours sur comment la musique peut changer le monde. Entre chaque chanson, nous suivions Tom dans son histoire biographique, débutant dès son jeune âge pour suivre son cheminement jusqu’à ce jour. Bien souvent, les dernières phrases de ses monologues étaient une mise en bouche pour la chanson suivante. À titre d’exemple, il a raconté comment, alors qu’il était membre d’Audioslave, le message texte reçu de Chris Cornell lui avait inspiré la chanson The Garden of Gethsemane (le message en question était : « If you swallow the coin from the wishing well, your dreams will come true in heaven or hell. »)
Évidemment, qui dit Tom Morello dit Rage Against the Machine. Nous avons donc eu droit à une savoureuse anecdote pendant le tournage de Sleep Now in the Fire pendant laquelle Michael Moore a été arrêté et la Bourse de New York avait été fermée à cause de Rage Against the Machine.
Si plusieurs des histoires ne sont pas nouvelles pour le public (une simple recherche sur Internet permet d’avoir plus de détails sur ces événements), il était très intéressant d’entendre le tout directement de Tom Morello.
Le mélange entre le récit biographique, les morceaux principalement acoustiques, et la finale avec Killing in the Name / Power to the People où la foule était levée et chantait en chœur ont fait en sorte que la soirée était mémorable.
À quelques occasions, j’avais eu la chance de voir des artistes dans des circonstances semblables (dont une soirée incroyable avec Bumblefoot à l’Anti il y a quelques années) et je vous recommande chaudement d’y aller si vous avez la chance de le faire.

As part of his A Night of Stories & Music tour, Tom Morello stopped at the Impérial Bell on Sunday, November 2. Here’s a look back at this one-of-a-kind evening, where all tickets had been snapped up.
Although I’ve had the chance to attend many shows at the Impérial, this was the first time I attended one where the floor was entirely covered with chairs. However, given the nature of the evening, it made perfect sense. As the tour title suggests, it was a mix of stories from Tom Morello and songs mainly drawn from his acoustic project The Nightwatchman.
In front of a stripped-down stage setup — just four guitars, a small table, a mic stand and plenty of pedals — Tom Morello walked on shortly after 8 p.m. After performing Keep Going, he shared an inspiring speech about how music can change the world. Between each song, we followed Tom through his personal story, starting from his childhood and progressing through his life journey to the present day. Very often, the final lines of his monologues served as a prelude to the next song. For example, he explained how, when he was a member of Audioslave, a text message from Chris Cornell inspired the song The Garden of Gethsemane (the message being: “If you swallow the coin from the wishing well, your dreams will come true in heaven or hell.”)
Naturally, when we talk about Tom Morello, we inevitably talk about Rage Against the Machine. We were treated to a great anecdote about the filming of Sleep Now in the Fire, during which Michael Moore was arrested and the New York Stock Exchange had to close because of Rage Against the Machine.
While many of these stories are not new to the public (a quick Internet search will provide more details about them), it was captivating to hear all of it directly from Tom Morello.
The combination of the biographical storytelling, the mostly acoustic songs, and the finale featuring Killing in the Name / Power to the People, where the crowd stood up and sang passionately, made the evening truly memorable.
On a few occasions, I’ve had the chance to see artists in similar intimate settings (including an incredible evening with Bumblefoot at l’Anti a few years ago), and I strongly recommend attending one if you ever get the chance.
