Je sais à quoi m’attendre quand je vais à un show de hardcore/metalcore. Mais on dirait que je suis surprise à chaque fois, puisque chaque show est différent. Vendredi passé c’était une soirée propice au pugilat, avec un alignement de groupes tous bien nommés à cette occasion. Quatre groupes avec chacun leur style particulier, quatre groupes qui ont sérieusement fait brasser la cabane et les fans sur le parterre glissant de bière de la Source.
Dans le coin droit, c’était Drop Out Cold, groupe de Québec tout juste sorti de son local de pratique qui nous en a mis plein les oreilles et qui a dès le début fait exploser la fureur parmi les gens arrivés plus tôt. Troisième fois que j’ai l’occasion de les entendre, et c’est toujours de mieux en mieux.

Dans l’autre coin droit, c’était Blank, groupe tout aussi puissant en termes d’incitation et de volume sonore. Ils ont joué un peu plus longtemps, des pièces punchées qui ont quand même filé rapidement. Pas trop le temps de souffler. Le seul répit étant les interludes reggae…
BLANK
Dans le coin gauche, c’était Thorns, en direct de l’Ontario et pour une première fois à Québec. Ouff c’était brutal – mais bien apprécié de la petite foule qui s’est défoulée (haha) à grands moulins de bras et de coups de pieds.
THORNS
Enfin, dans l’autre coin gauche, c’était la tête d’affiche Peer Pressure, groupe bien connu et établi dans l’Est du pays. À quatre, avec des pistes de basse, ça sonnait tellement que je craignais de nouveau que le plafond nous tombe dessus. Mené par Victoria, au regard déterminé, le groupe n’a rien à prouver : le public était déjà conquis et n’avait pas besoin d’être motivé à se laisser aller. Comme dans le cas des trois autres groupes, une pièce n’attendait pas l’autre, c’était une rafale bien dosée de titres issus de tous les albums de Peer Pressure et pour ma part, c’est « Do a Number on Me » qui a eu le plus d’effet.
Les moments forts de cette soirée ont été les « features », que ce soit Victoria de Peer Pressure avec Louis de Blank ou Matt de Thorns, Guillaume de Drop Out Cold ou Simon de Hopeful Sixteen, ou bien lorsqu’une jeune dame à l’air bien sage, nommée Sophie, a exprimé et partagé sa hargne au micro avec Victoria, encore une fois, pendant « Steal Your Crown ». L’esprit de la communauté était bien tangible ce soir-là, participant à une ambiance…. je voudrais dire festive mais non, c’est plutôt un sentiment de pouvoir collectif cathartique et revigorant que j’ai perçu.
Enfin, pour dire franchement, ne pas avoir eu à mon appareil photo et mon sac sur moi, je me serais peut-être jetée dans le pit aussi pour me défouler tellement les prestations étaient dynamiques et pleines d’humeur. Mais je vais pratiquer le two-step dans mon sous-sol avant…

I know what to expect when I go to a hardcore/metalcore show. But it seems like I’m surprised every time, since every show is different. Last Friday was a night ripe for a brawl, with a lineup of bands all aptly named for the occasion. Four bands, each with their own unique style, four bands that really shook the house and got the fans going on the beer-slicked floor at La Source.
In the right corner was Drop Out Cold, a band from Quebec City fresh out of their rehearsal space, who really blew us away and had the early crowd going wild right from the start. Third time I’ve had the chance to hear them, and they just keep getting better and better. In the other right corner was Blank, a band just as powerful in terms of incentive and volume. They played a bit longer, delivering punchy tracks that still flew by quickly. Not much time to catch your breath. The only respite came during the reggae interludes…
In the left corner, straight outta Ontario, was Thorns, for a first time in Quebec City. Phew, it was quite brutal—but well-received by the small crowd, who let loose with wild arm-waving and kicking. Finally, in the other left corner was the headliner Peer Pressure, a well-known and established band in this part of Canada. With four members and bass tracks, the sound was so intense I was worried the ceiling might come crashing down on us. Led by Victoria, with her determined gaze, the band has nothing to prove: the audience was already won over and didn’t need any encouragement to let loose. As with the other three bands, one song didn’t wait for the next; it was a well-paced barrage of tracks from all of Peer Pressure’s albums, and for me, it was “Do a Number on Me” that had the biggest impact.
The highlights of the evening were the features, whether it was Victoria from Peer Pressure with Louis from Blank, Matt from Thorns, Guillaume from Drop Out Cold, or Simon from Hopeful Sixteen, or when a young lady who looked quite demure, named Sophie, expressed and shared her anger on the mic with Victoria, once again, during « Steal Your Crown ». The community spirit was very tangible that night, contributing to an ambience… I’d say festive, but no, it was more of a cathartic and invigorating sense of collective power that I felt.
Honestly, if I hadn’t had my camera and bag with me, I might have thrown myself into the pit too just to let loose, the performances being so dynamic and full of feeling. But I’m going to practice the two-step move in my basement first…
