Forte de plus de 50 ans de carrière, la formation Journey visitait jeudi soir pour une dernière fois les amateurs de rock de la Vieille Capitale. La formule concert du Centre Vidéotron affichait pratiquement complet, alors que de nombreux amateurs se sont déplacés pour la tournée The Final Frontier. Étonnamment, une foule très, très hétérogène assiste au spectacle, de leurs fans de la première heure jusqu’aux adolescents modernes, plusieurs jeunes arborant d’ailleurs des t-shirts de heavy metal. Ça nous démontre à quel point Journey a transcendé les générations… voici le compte rendu détaillé de la soirée!

19h45, les lumières s’éteignent, le visuel est immense. Les premières notes de Be Good to Yourself se font entendre et tous se lèvent d’un bond à l’entrée des légendes du rock que nous avons devant nous. Mettons quelque chose au clair au départ: Steve Perry n’est plus le chanteur de Journey, et c’est bien triste. Par contre, depuis un peu plus d’une dizaine d’années, Arnel Pineda le remplace de main de maître, n’essayant même pas de mettre le groupe à sa couleur; au contraire, il honore Perry en chantant pratiquement exactement comme lui. Bien que sa voix accrochera à quelques occasions durant la soirée, il insuffle une énergie contagieuse au groupe et se débrouille à merveille! L’ambiance est au rendez-vous durant Stone in Love et la sublime Only The Young, entonnées à merveille par un Pineda en pleine possession de ses moyens; il se promène sur scène et anime la foule comme si c’était son dernier spectacle, de toute beauté! Après Just The Same Way et Suzanne, Lights suit, chantée par Deen Castronovo, tout comme Still They Ride par la suite. Coudonc, où est-ce que ces gars-là trouvent leur voix?! C’est fascinant de voir à quel point tout est facile autant aux instruments qu’aux voix pour les membres du groupe. Toujours durant Still They Ride, les agents de sécurité ont le mandat de lancer des dizaines de gilets du groupe dans la foule, au grand plaisir évidemment des amateurs au parterre et dans les loges. Un magnifique solo de piano de Jonathan Cain précède Who’s Crying Now, pour laquelle les amateurs se lèvent à nouveau. Wow! Wheels in the Sky est absolument hallucinante, les flammes jaillissant sur la scène et les images à l’écran étant magnifiques. Du bonbon, surtout considérant l’énergie incroyable que chaque membre du groupe transmet à la foule… si vous avez cette forme physique quand vous serez septuagénaire, faites-nous signe!! La superbe Faithfully est chantée à plein poumons par les amateurs, puis on sent qu’on embarque dans une succession de hits… mais ce n’est pas exactement le cas. En fait, derrière l’avalanche de succès se trouve une seule ombre au tableau: dans un setlist d’autour de 25 chansons, il y a parfois quelques « fillers », et Journey ne fait pas exception à la règle. Après un passage à vide de quelques pièces (que certains auront sans doute aimées, ce n’est qu’une opinion bien personnelle), on revient avec I’ll Be Alright Without You, chantée par Jason Derlatka, puis avec un de nos grands slows d’ado, Open Arms. Sincèrement, on se répète : Arnel Pineda a une voix absolument exceptionnelle et il est infiniment dommage qu’il vive dans l’ombre de Steve Perry. La Do Da est franchement impressionnante et fait lever les fans à nouveau, alors que Pineda s’offre même un bain de foule. Durant Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’, il anime brillamment le parterre avec son réservoir infini d’énergie, puis le plat de résistance est offert : Separate Ways résonne enfin dans les murs du Centre Vidéotron. Une des pièces les plus iconiques des années 80, interprétée à merveille, voilà qui ajoute encore plus à la magie d’une soirée déjà parfaite! Any Way You Want It poursuit dans la même veine, avant que se termine le concert avec l’inévitable classique Don’t Stop Believin, durant laquelle tombe une pluie de confettis pour agrémenter le tout. Les applaudissements sont nourris pour saluer la grandiose carrière des membres de Journey, qui nous en ont fait voir de toutes les couleurs.

Mention toute spéciale en terminant : avec deux spectacles au Centre Vidéotron en deux soirs pour le constater, je me permets de saluer la gentillesse, le professionnalisme et la bonne humeur de tous ceux qui nous accueillent; le service pour les médias est hors pair et sachez que c’est très apprécié!
C’est toute une soirée que nous a offerte Journey. C’est malheureux de voir les carrières s’achever, mais ça fait partie de la vie; en attendant, le souvenir laissé jeudi soir est impérissable!

With more than 50 years of career behind them, the band Journey visited the rock fans of the Vieille Capitale one last time on Thursday night. The concert configuration at the Centre Vidéotron was practically sold out, as many fans came out for The Final Frontier tour. Surprisingly, a very, very heterogeneous crowd attended the show, from longtime fans to modern teenagers, many young people even wearing heavy metal t-shirts. It shows just how much Journey has transcended generations… here is the detailed recap of the evening!

7:45 p.m., the lights go out and the visuals are massive. The first notes of Be Good to Yourself are heard and everyone jumps to their feet as the rock legends step onto the stage before us. Let’s make something clear right from the start: Steve Perry is no longer Journey’s singer, and that is indeed sad. However, for a little more than a decade now, Arnel Pineda has replaced him masterfully, not even trying to reshape the band in his own image; on the contrary, he honors Perry by singing almost exactly like him. Although his voice falters a few times during the evening, he injects contagious energy into the band and performs wonderfully! The atmosphere is already electric during Stone in Love and the sublime Only The Young, beautifully delivered by a Pineda in full command of his abilities; he moves around the stage and energizes the crowd as if it were his last show, absolutely stunning! After Just The Same Way and Suzanne, Lights follows, sung by Deen Castronovo, just like Still They Ride shortly afterward. Seriously, where do these guys find their voices?! It’s fascinating to see how everything seems so easy for the band members, both instrumentally and vocally. During Still They Ride, security staff were tasked with throwing dozens of band shirts into the crowd, much to the delight of fans on the floor and in the suites. A magnificent piano solo by Jonathan Cain precedes Who’s Crying Now, which gets the crowd back on its feet once again. Wow! Wheels in the Sky is absolutely phenomenal, with flames erupting on stage and stunning images on the screens. Pure candy, especially considering the incredible energy each member of the band delivers to the audience… if you have that kind of physical shape when you reach your seventies, let us know!! The superb Faithfully is sung at the top of the fans’ lungs, and then it feels like we’re entering a succession of hits… but that’s not exactly the case. In fact, behind the avalanche of classics there is one small downside: in a setlist of around 25 songs, there are sometimes a few “fillers,” and Journey is no exception to the rule. After a slight lull with a few songs (which some people surely enjoyed, this is only a very personal opinion), the band returns with I’ll Be Alright Without You, sung by Jason Derlatka, followed by one of our great teenage slow songs, Open Arms. Honestly, it bears repeating: Arnel Pineda has an absolutely exceptional voice and it is infinitely unfortunate that he lives in the shadow of Steve Perry. La Do Da is truly impressive and gets the fans standing once again, as Pineda even takes a moment to step into the crowd. During Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’, he brilliantly animates the floor with his seemingly endless reservoir of energy, before the main course arrives: Separate Ways finally echoes through the walls of the Centre Vidéotron. One of the most iconic songs of the 1980s, performed to perfection, adding even more magic to an already perfect evening! Any Way You Want It continues in the same vein before the concert ends with the inevitable classic Don’t Stop Believin’, during which a rain of confetti falls from the ceiling. The applause is thunderous as fans salute the grand career of Journey’s members, who gave us quite a spectacle.

A very special mention in closing: after witnessing two shows at the Centre Vidéotron in two nights, I would like to salute the kindness, professionalism and good spirits of everyone who welcomes us there; the service provided to the media is outstanding and it is greatly appreciated!

It was quite an evening offered by Journey. It’s unfortunate to see careers coming to an end, but that is part of life; in the meantime, the memory left on Thursday night is unforgettable.
