25:11:17 – Omnium Gatherum / Aether Realm / Hinayana (Québec)

Pendant que l’hiver arrive tranquillement, nous avons la chance, en ce lundi soir, d’avoir de la grande visite de la Finlande avec Omnium Gatherum, qui ne sont probablement pas trop dépaysés côté température, disons que c’est pas mal similaire. Quelques jours seulement après la sortie de leur plus récent album May the Bridges We Burn Light the Way (7 novembre via Century Media), le groupe était de passage à la Source de la Martinière de Québec en compagnie de Aether Realm et Hinayana. Avec une foule très respectable pour un début de semaine, le lineup promettait et il a livré.

À 19h00, c’est le groupe texan Hinayana qui lance la soirée. Honnêtement, j’ai l’impression que ce fut une découverte pour plusieurs. De mon côté, je les ai découverts en 2023 lors de la sortie de leur second album Shatter and Fall via une simple recommandation YouTube. Ils avaient aussi retenu mon attention avec la participation de Tuomas Saukkonen (voix de Wolfheart) sur A Tide Unturning. Plus heavy en spectacle que sur album, leur death/doom mélodique gagne encore plus en profondeur en live. Les membres ont livré une performance très solide, avec une ambiance tantôt lourde, tantôt atmosphérique, propre à chacune de leurs pièces. Actifs depuis 12 ans, ils semblent maintenant prendre une belle vitesse. Ce sera clairement un nom à surveiller. Vous allez sans doute les revoir au Québec plus tôt que tard.

HINAYANA

L’attente est minime. Tout roule au quart de tour ce soir. Comme dirait un grand sage québécois : « pas l’temps d’niaiser ». Aether Realm, c’était une première pour moi en spectacle (oui, oui!). Ils sont déjà venus plusieurs fois au Québec, et les fans inconditionnels savent que le groupe de Caroline du Nord combine death mélodique, folk metal et une touche festive bien à eux. Musicalement, j’ai toujours trouvé qu’ils pigent un peu partout dans leurs influences, et ça fonctionne. Le frontman et guitariste Heinrich Arnold est excellent pour embarquer la foule et la garder active. Entre anecdotes de restaurants, quelques mots en français et son énergie contagieuse, il garde le public bien accroché. Quand il demande aux autres s’ils sont prêts à augmenter la vitesse et que les deux, de dos, sont occupés avec leur setup, il récupère ça avec un sourire : « de toute façon, ils m’écoutent pas ». Des tiny devilhorns, aux chansons plus émotionnelles jusqu’aux moments festifs, Aether Realm sait faire un show et ils l’ont encore prouvé.

AETHER REALM

Directement de Kotka en Finlande, les vétérans du death mélodique Omnium Gatherum étaient de retour en tête d’affiche à Québec. Nous avons d’ailleurs fait une entrevue récemment avec le chanteur Jukka Pelkonen, qui soulignait les similarités entre les Québécois et les Finlandais, notamment l’intensité en spectacle. Est-ce que Jukka a été déçu ce soir? Je ne crois pas. Il nous confiait également qu’il avait entre 30 et 40 chansons prêtes et qu’il improviserait selon le feeling. Mais il était évident que Omnium Gatherum allait se concentrer sur le nouvel album May the Bridges We Burn Light the Way, qui s’écoute d’ailleurs très bien. Nous avons eu droit, entre autres, à The Last Hero, My Pain, Ignite the Flame et l’excellente The Darkest City.

Vers la fin du set, ils ont dédié Nightwalkers (de Beyond, 2013) à un membre de leur équipe de merch qui venait de perdre un être cher. Une pièce épique de plus de huit minutes, traversant diverses émotions. Pour ceux qui se le demandent : oui, le guitariste Markus Vanhala fait encore toutes ses petites pauses signature. Une chose qu’on remarque : il est très fort dans le contact visuel. Ça peut sembler anodin, mais il te fait sentir partie intégrante du moment. Certains musiciens se contentent de jouer. Lui, c’est autre chose.

Et que dire de Jukka Pelkonen, qui sait parfaitement interagir avec la foule. Encore en grande forme ce soir, et tu avais intérêt à suivre. Il a même pris la peine de nous dire un petit « Merci, kiitos! ». Le choix du setlist ne faisait peut-être pas l’affaire de tous, mais je ne suis pas surpris de voir autant de pièces du dernier album. Cette tournée en tête d’affiche est probablement leur meilleure occasion d’en jouer autant, tout en ayant le temps de bien les installer. Énergique, très bon son, éclairage efficace, ce fut une belle soirée. Quelques circle pits, rien de brutal, mais parfaits pour l’ambiance générale.

As winter slowly settles in, we had the chance this Monday evening to welcome a major visitor from Finland with Omnium Gatherum, who were probably not too out of their element with the temperature, since it felt pretty similar. Just a few days after releasing their newest album May the Bridges We Burn Light the Way (November 7 via Century Media), the band stopped at La Source de la Martinière in Québec City with Aether Realm and Hinayana. With a solid crowd for the start of the week, the lineup promised a lot and delivered even more.

At 7:00 p.m., Texas band Hinayana opened the evening. Honestly, I feel like they were a discovery for many people. I first heard them in 2023 when their second album Shatter and Fall came out, after a simple YouTube recommendation. They had also caught my attention thanks to the participation of Tuomas Saukkonen (voice of Wolfheart) on A Tide Unturning. Heavier live than on the album, their melodic death/doom gains even more depth on stage. The band delivered a very strong performance, with a mix of heavy and atmospheric moments that shaped a unique ambiance for each song. They have been active for 12 years and things seem to be moving forward quickly. They are definitely a name to keep an eye on and you will likely see them again in Québec sooner than later.

The wait between sets was short. Everything was running like clockwork tonight. As a wise Québec saying goes, “pas l’temps d’niaiser”. For Aether Realm, it was my first time seeing them live (yes, really!). They have already visited Québec several times, and diehard fans know the North Carolina group blends melodic death, folk metal and a festive touch all their own. Musically, I always felt like they draw inspiration from many places and it works. Frontman and guitarist Heinrich Arnold is excellent at bringing the crowd in and keeping them active. Between restaurant anecdotes, a few words in French and contagious energy, he kept everyone engaged. At one point, he asked his bandmates if they were ready to pick up the speed, but the two were turned around working on their setup. He recovered instantly with a smile: “anyway, they never listen to me”. From tiny devilhorns to emotional songs to upbeat moments, Aether Realm knows how to put on a show and they proved it again tonight.

Straight from Kotka, Finland, melodic death veterans Omnium Gatherum returned to headline in Québec City. We recently interviewed singer Jukka Pelkonen, who pointed out the similarities between Québécois and Finns, especially the intensity at shows. Was Jukka disappointed tonight? I doubt it. He also told us he had between 30 and 40 songs ready and would choose based on the evening’s vibe. Still, it was clear Omnium Gatherum would focus on the new album May the Bridges We Burn Light the Way, which is excellent by the way. We were treated to songs like The Last Hero, My Pain, Ignite the Flame and the excellent The Darkest City.

Near the end of the set, they dedicated Nightwalkers (from Beyond, 2013) to a member of their merch team who had just lost a loved one. The eight minute track carries a wide range of emotions and felt even more powerful tonight. For those wondering, yes, guitarist Markus Vanhala still does all his trademark pauses. One thing you notice is how strong he is with eye contact. It might seem minor, but it makes you feel included in the moment. Some musicians just play. Markus does more than that.

And of course, Jukka Pelkonen knows exactly how to interact with the crowd to keep the energy up. He was in great shape tonight and you had to keep up. He even gave us a little “Merci, kiitos!”. The setlist might not have pleased everyone, but I am not surprised they played so many songs from the latest album. This headlining tour is probably their best opportunity to showcase them properly. Energetic performance, great sound, effective lighting, it was a very enjoyable night. There were a few circle pits, nothing too intense, but perfectly in tune with the mood of the evening.
