Death To All – Symbolic Healing Tour s’arrête à Montréal!

Oh, mais parfait line-up! Trois bands death metal dribblant dans la même direction. Tous réunis au MTelus, pour la brutalité exquise du Symbolic Healing Tour. Ça fait plaisir à l’âme, justement on parle de la tournée 35e anniversaire de l’album Spiritual Healing ici.

À 19h, on ouvre les hostilités avec Phobophilic, un band du Dakota du Nord. Personnellement, je ne connaissais pas ce groupe avant ladite prestation. Ayant un EP et un LP en carrière, il s’intègre sans problème aux deux autres parties, avec ses thèmes philosophiques et existentialistes. Le quatuor démarre donc avec leur première pièce The Illusion of Self. Il y a un ajustement sonore durant l’ensemble, plus les chansons s’enchaînaient, plus la basse devenait proéminente. Nous tailladant de plus en plus profondément les entrailles. Leur présence semblait simplement naturelle, appréciait leur moment et n’était avare de le démontrer. Très belle découverte 2025, pour ma part.

PHOBOPHILIC

On poursuit la soirée de façonnage mental avec Gorguts. Je ne crois pas avoir besoin d’introduire le légendaire groupe québécois. Petit cadeau pour débuter, une nouvelle chanson! Vous avez compris, un nouvel album bien chaud est en route. Juste au moment d’annoncer le morceau suivant, Luc Lemay s’adresse à la foule. Dévoilant son enthousiasme d’être ENFIN en concert à Montréal, il nous confie qu’il attendait avec impatience le moment de dire son premier blasphème de la tournée. Un « Tabarnak! » bien ressenti précéda donc An Ocean of Wisdom. La foule demanda l’appel d’un wall of death pour la chanson suivante. N’ayant pas eu de réponse immédiate, les spectateurs impatients de démontrer leur amour avec vigueur décidèrent de s’offrir ce beau mur, malgré tout. Gorguts conclut avec Bodily Corrupted.

GORGUTS

Le clou du spectacle, la cérémonie ultime pour rendre hommage à Chuck Schuldiner. Death To All n’ont pas laissé de côté l’anniversaire de décès de leur frère d’armes (13 décembre 2001). En chœur, la foule et le groupe clamèrent haut et fort des « Chuck! Chuck! Chuck! » durant le spectacle. Comme énoncé plus haut, la tournée Symbolic Healing partage le 35e anniversaire de Spiritual Healing, ainsi que le 30e de Symbolic. Ce n’est sans surprise que le groupe interpréta l’intégralité des deux albums. Tout en mélangeant l’ordre des chansons, il donna la satisfaction aux auditeurs de rafraîchir leur passion pour les succès. Si vous n’avez pas encore eu la chance de voir le band, il s’agit de Death avec Max Phelps en remplacement de Schuldiner. Pssst! Ça sonne pareil. En addition aux 17 chansons, ils terminèrent avec Spirit Crusher, suivi de Pull the Plug. Une prestation intense en émotions et nostalgique pour les fans. RIP Chuck!

Oh, but what a perfect line-up! Three death metal bands dribbling in the same direction. All gathered at the MTelus for the exquisite brutality of the Symbolic Healing Tour. It warms the soul — after all, we’re talking about the 35th anniversary tour of the Spiritual Healing album here.

At 7 p.m., the hostilities opened with Phobophilic, a band from North Dakota. Personally, I didn’t know this group before said performance. With one EP and one LP in their career, they fit right in with the other two acts, thanks to their philosophical and existentialist themes. The quartet kicked things off with their first track, The Illusion of Self. There was a sound adjustment throughout the set; as the songs went on, the bass became more and more prominent, slicing deeper and deeper into our guts. Their presence felt natural, they enjoyed their moment, and didn’t hesitate to show it. A great 2025 discovery for me.

We continue the evening of mental shaping with Gorguts. I don’t think I need to introduce the legendary Quebec band. A little gift to start: a brand-new song! You got it — a fresh new album is on the way. Just as he was about to announce the next track, Luc Lemay addressed the crowd. Revealing his excitement about FINALLY playing a show in Montreal, he confided that he had been eagerly waiting for the moment to say his first blasphemy of the tour. A well-felt “Tabarnak!” preceded An Ocean of Wisdom. The crowd called for a wall of death for the next song. Without getting an immediate answer, the spectators, eager to show their love with vigor, decided to form the wall anyway. Gorguts concluded with Bodily Corrupted.

The highlight of the night: the ultimate ceremony to honor Chuck Schuldiner. Death To All did not overlook the anniversary of their brother-in-arms’ passing (December 13, 2001). In unison, the crowd and the band shouted “Chuck! Chuck! Chuck!” throughout the show. As mentioned earlier, the Symbolic Healing tour celebrates both the 35th anniversary of Spiritual Healing and the 30th of Symbolic. Unsurprisingly, the band performed both albums in full. While mixing up the track order, they gave listeners the satisfaction of rekindling their passion for those classics. If you haven’t yet seen the band, it’s essentially Death with Max Phelps replacing Schuldiner. Pssst — it sounds the same. In addition to the 17 songs, they closed with Spirit Crusher, followed by Pull the Plug. An emotionally intense and nostalgic performance for the fans. RIP Chuck!
