Korn/Gojira/Loathe

Centre Vidéotron, Québec
Vendredi soir bien différent des autres hier, alors que le Centre Vidéotron se transformait en grande terre d’accueil du heavy métal; la formation nu-metal Korn était de passage dans la Vieille Capitale, flanquée de Loathe et de Gojira, rien de moins! Voici un compte-rendu de cette soirée franchement réussie!
Loathe
C’est la formation britannique Loathe qui est chargée d’animer la foule, déjà assez dense pour l’occasion. La bande européenne livre une performance efficace, visitant différents styles; derrière un nu metal assumé, on retrouve des pointes (petites, remarquez) de black metal, de thrash, de prog… ça fonctionne! Les membres du groupe bougent bien et les interactions avec la foule font flèche de tout bois. Les mélodies sont intenses, bien que clichées un brin, mais il n’en demeure pas moins que le groupe est très bien choisi pour réchauffer la foule, dans un style musical qui complémente à merveille les deux groupes suivants.
LOATHE
Gojira
À 19h50, Gojira embarque sur scène, devant un écran fort impressionnant qui ne cessera d’afficher des images et des vidéos futuristes, technologiques tout au long de leur prestation. Habituée à être l’underdog, la formation française ouvre avec Only Pain, flammes incluses sur la scène. Ceux qui ne connaissaient pas Gojira sont décoiffés au possible; en spectacle, c’est fou raide et cette fois-ci n’y fait pas exception. Au niveau technique, les Français sont au sommet de leur art (soyons francs, ils l’ont toujours été…), et la performance de chacun des membres ne peut qu’être saluée bien bas.
Flying Whales est un des moments forts de la prestation, de par sa sonorité unique; rien ne ressemble à Gojira, bibitte musicale hallucinante qui fait son propre chemin dans le monde du heavy metal. La foule réagit très positivement à la prestation des frères Duplantier et cie, si bien que durant The Cell, on se demande presque si Gojira est le band principal de la soirée. Bon, pour avoir vu le groupe à quelques reprises, ce n’est rien de surprenant. Le mosh pit est déjà bien en branle et les amateurs tournoient furieusement au parterre. Si on ajoute un visuel exceptionnel et des musiciens charismatiques à souhait, la recette est parfaite. Another World est incroyable, nous faisant voyager dans d’autres contrées galactiques, et on plonge ensuite vers Silvera, une (sinon la) meilleure pièce du groupe. La foule en demande et en redemande, définitivement conquise. Comme si ce n’était pas assez, Gojira y va d’une interprétation parfaite de sa performance mémorable aux Jeux olympiques: Mea Culpa (Ah! ça ira!), images en prime, détruit tout ce qu’il reste du Centre Vidéotron, avant que le groupe ne complète avec Amazonia, sous un tonnerre d’applaudissements. Je mets un vieux 2$ que la large majorité des amateurs en présence ne connaissaient pas Gojira et les ajouteront ce soir à leur playlist; les Français ont encore une fois conquis Québec, et brillamment mis la table pour le plat principal!
GOJIRA
Korn
Fort attendue, la formation californienne Korn foule enfin les planches du Centre Vidéotron, forte de plus de 30 ans de carrière. C’est un menu costaud qui est proposé aux Québécois, avec un total de près de 20 pièces tirées de la discographie du groupe. Dès les premières notes de Blind, entamée derrière un large rideau, la foule manifeste bruyamment sa présence, acclamant sans réserve Jonathan Davis et sa bande. Le son est moyen au départ et on perd un peu la voix de Davis, mais ça se placera durant le spectacle. Par contre, certaines pièces ont trop de basse et enterrent les autres musiciens, du moins de mon côté de la scène. Twist nous fait rapidement voir que Korn a encore la touche; pionnière du nu-metal, la bande américaine continue avec l’excellente Here to Stay, suivie de Got the Life, ma pièce préférée de Korn. Le parterre est en mouvance, le mosh pit prenant de l’ampleur. Les spectateurs dans les sièges ne sont pas en reste, bruyants et très réactifs aux moindres gestes du groupe. On se téléporte à Shoots and Ladders, moment fort du spectacle (et du bonbon pour les photographes) pendant lequel Jonathan Davis se présente seul sur scène, cornemuse à la bouche. Tout au long de la prestation, les lasers fusent de partout et le visuel est impressionnant. On sent la foule un peu moins présente en moitié de parcours, elle qui réagit cependant fortement aux snippets de One et de We Will Rock You proposées en intermède durant deux pièces. Durant A.D.I.D.A.S, les amateurs reprennent leurs esprits et recommencent à hurler furieusement, et ce sera le cas jusqu’à la fin de la performance de Korn. Le rappel est très, TRÈS solide avec 4U, Falling Away From Me, Divine et Freak on a Leash. Ouf! Grosse performance! Deux petits bémols : la voix de Jonathan Davis fonctionne à merveille dans les graves, mais il est un peu moins efficace que par le passé dans le clean vocal; aussi, on aurait pris davantage d’interactions avec le public, mais bon, il n’en demeure pas moins qu’on est là pour la musique!
C’est un concert stellaire, sans grande faille qui a été donné par Korn, Gojira et Loathe vendredi soir. Le métal a clairement toujours sa place dans la Vieille Capitale!

Friday night was unlike any other yesterday, as the Centre Vidéotron turned into a massive home for heavy metal; the nu-metal band Korn stopped by Québec City, flanked by Loathe and Gojira, nothing less! Here’s a recap of this highly successful evening!
Loathe
It was the British band Loathe who had the task of firing up the crowd, already quite dense for the occasion. The European outfit delivered an effective performance, touching on different styles; behind an unapologetic nu-metal backbone, there were hints (small ones, mind you) of black metal, thrash, prog… it worked! The band members moved around a lot and their interactions with the crowd hit the mark. The melodies were intense, albeit a bit cliché, but the fact remains that the band was a very good choice to warm up the audience, with a musical style that complemented the following two acts perfectly.
Gojira
At 7:50 p.m., Gojira hit the stage, in front of an impressive screen that kept flashing futuristic and technological images and videos throughout their set. Used to being the underdog, the French formation opened with Only Pain, flames included on stage. Those unfamiliar with Gojira were blown away; live, they’re insanely powerful, and this night was no exception. On a technical level, the French are at the top of their game (let’s be honest, they always have been…), and the performance of each member can only be applauded with respect.
Flying Whales was one of the highlights of the set, thanks to its unique sound; nothing sounds like Gojira, a mind-blowing musical creature carving its own path in the heavy metal world. The crowd responded very positively to the Duplantier brothers and co., so much so that during The Cell, you almost wondered if Gojira was the headliner. Having seen them before, it was no surprise. The mosh pit was already in full swing, and fans spun furiously on the floor. Add to that an exceptional visual production and musicians brimming with charisma, and the recipe was perfect. Another World was incredible, taking us on a journey to other galactic realms, followed by Silvera, one of (if not the) best tracks from the band. The crowd demanded more and more, completely won over. As if that wasn’t enough, Gojira delivered a flawless rendition of their memorable Olympic performance: Mea Culpa (Ah! ça ira!), with visuals included, tearing down what was left of the Centre Vidéotron before closing with Amazonia, under a thunder of applause. I’d bet an old $2 coin that the vast majority of fans present who didn’t know Gojira will be adding them to their playlist tonight; once again, the French band conquered Québec, brilliantly setting the stage for the main course!
Korn
Highly anticipated, the Californian band Korn finally took the stage at the Centre Vidéotron, backed by more than 30 years of career. A hefty menu was offered to Quebecers, with nearly 20 songs pulled from the band’s discography. From the very first notes of Blind, played behind a giant curtain, the crowd roared loudly, cheering Jonathan Davis and his crew without restraint. The sound was average at the start, with Davis’s vocals somewhat lost, but it improved as the show went on. However, some songs had too much bass, drowning out the other musicians—at least from where I was standing. Twist quickly showed that Korn still has the touch; pioneers of nu-metal, the Americans carried on with the excellent Here to Stay, followed by Got the Life, my personal favorite. The pit was alive, growing wilder as the set progressed. The seated crowd wasn’t left out, equally loud and reactive to every gesture from the band. We were then transported to Shoots and Ladders, a highlight of the night (and candy for photographers), with Jonathan Davis appearing alone on stage, bagpipes in hand. Throughout the show, lasers fired everywhere and the visuals were stunning. The crowd dipped a little mid-set, but roared back during snippets of One and We Will Rock You woven into two songs. During A.D.I.D.A.S, fans regained their energy and screamed furiously once again, and it stayed that way until the end of Korn’s performance. The encore was very, VERY solid with 4U, Falling Away From Me, Divine, and Freak on a Leash. Wow! What a huge performance! Two small drawbacks: Jonathan Davis’s voice worked perfectly in the lows but wasn’t as strong as before in clean vocals; also, we would have liked more interaction with the audience. But hey, in the end, we were there for the music!
It was a stellar concert, nearly flawless, delivered by Korn, Gojira, and Loathe Friday night. Metal clearly still has its place in Québec City!
