Au début du mois de novembre 2021, la formation Bullet For My Valentine a fait paraitre son 7e album, sobrement intitulé Bullet For My Valentine. En marge de la sortie de l’album, notre journaliste Jonathan Gamache a eu la chance d’avoir le bassiste, Jamie Matthias, en entrevue.
MU : Tout d’abord, j’aimerais savoir pourquoi vous avez décidé d’appeler votre nouvel album Bullet For My Valentine?
JM : C’est une bonne question! Je crois que c’était le temps pour Bullet d’avoir un album qui porte le nom du groupe. C’est le 7e album du groupe et nous faisons une déclaration de ce que nous sommes avec cet album. Ça a donc beaucoup de sens de faire un album éponyme.
MU : Cet album est beaucoup plus proche des racines du groupe que les albums précédents. Pourquoi revenir aux racines?
JM : Nous ne nous sommes pas assis en nous disant « nous devons faire un album plus lourd que les précédents ». C’est simplement là où le groupe est rendu, tu comprends? Lorsque nous avons débuté la création de l’album éponyme, c’est ça qui a été créé. Avec cet album nous avons mis tout notre cœur et nous avons fait le plus lourd que nous le pouvions. C’est arrivé tout naturellement et nous sommes très heureux du résultat.
MU : Dans les premières minutes de la pièce Parasite, il y a plusieurs extraits provenant des pièces déjà parues du groupe. Comment est venue cette idée et comment avez-vous choisi les extraits?
JM : C’est une superbe idée qui a très bien fonctionné. C’était une façon originale de rappeler les plus gros succès du groupe. C’est également une belle introduction pour l’album et pour faire la transition entre les succès du passé et le nouvel album.
MU : Quel est le sentiment que vous voulez que les gens aient en écoutant le nouvel album?
JM : C’est au choix des personnes en fait. Évidemment, l’album est très lourd et j’imagine que si vous êtes de mauvaise humeur, ça permettra de faire sortir cette colère. Nous sommes conscients que les 2 dernières années, avec la COVID et tout ce qui en découle, a causé beaucoup de colère chez les gens et de frustration et je crois que cet album parlera à plusieurs.
MU : Quelles ont été les sources d’inspiration pour la création de cet album?
JM : Nous nous sommes simplement regroupés dans une pièce et nous avons commencé à improviser. Nos influences sont principalement ce que nous écoutions plus jeunes comme Machine Head, Metallica et Slayer. Évidemment, ces groupes seront nos influences et vous pourrez l’entendre dans nos chansons.
MU : Il y a eu 4 extraits qui ont été lancés avant la parution de l’album et les commentaires étaient que c’était possiblement le matériel le plus lourd de Bullet For My Valentine. Qu’est-ce que tu en penses?
JM : Je suis d’accord. Cet album est le plus lourd que nous avons enregistré à ce jour. Sans aucun doute! Je ne sais pas si nous irons plus lourd dans l’avenir, sans que nous ayons forcé les choses. Encore une fois, c’est venu naturellement.
MU : Quelle est ta chanson préférée sur cet album?
JM : J’en ai quelques-unes, honnêtement. Quand nous étions en tournée au Royaume-Uni, nous avons joué les quatre chansons et, à ce moment, ma préférée était Shatter. C’est une chanson qui est différente de ce dont les gens sont habitués de Bullet For My Valentine. Knives aussi est très bonne et les gens aiment beaucoup l’entendre en spectacle.
MU : Est-ce que vous planifiez jouer l’album dans son intégralité?
JM : Peut-être. Nous serions partant pour le faire et ça pourrait arriver pour une occasion spéciale. Ça serait une bonne idée.
MU : Quelle est l’importance du visuel lors de vos spectacles?
JM : C’est une partie importante pour nous. Pour notre tournée actuelle au Royaume-Uni, nous avons une grosse production avec des écrans entre autres. Notre objectif est de donner aux spectateurs le meilleur spectacle possible. Les gens payent pour venir nous voir en spectacle et nous voulons qu’ils repartent en se disant « Oh mon Dieu! C’était un spectacle incroyable! Je vais m’en souvenir toute ma vie! ». On veut donner à nos fans ce qu’ils veulent.
MU : Est-ce qu’il y a une chanson de Bullet For My Valentine que tu ne tolères plus?
JM : (Rires) Je ne pense pas. Quand nous sommes en tournée pendant 18 mois et que nous jouons les mêmes chansons soir après soir, il est possible que je sois tanné de certaines chansons. Cependant, comme nous n’avons pas fait de tournée pendant les 2 dernières années, il n’y en a pas. Je suis heureux de jouer toutes les pièces qui sont jouées en spectacle. C’est possible que ma réponse soit différente dans 18 mois par contre! (rires)
MU : Est-ce que la pandémie a eu un impact sur l’album?
JM : Oui. Évidemment, la création a été différente que pour les albums précédents. Avec toutes les règles qui changent selon les pays. Là où j’habite, les règles étaient différentes de celles où vivent Math [Matthew Tuck, chanteur] ou Jason [Jason Bolwd, batteur], ce qui limitait les endroits où nous pouvions nous rencontrer et le nombre des personnes qui pouvaient être présentes. C’était différent, mais c’était une bonne chose, car nous n’avions pas la pression du temps et l’échéance pour livrer l’album. Nous avons travaillé sur l’album quand nous pouvions et il a été prêt lorsqu’il l’était.
MU : Comme tu n’es pas un membre fondateur du groupe, quelle a été la chanson la plus difficile à apprendre et pourquoi?
JM : J’y réfléchis… Je dirais Pretty On The Outside, qui est sur Fever. Ce n’est pas que c’est une chanson complexe, mais plutôt le chant et la musique au niveau du refrain qui ne fait pas de sens. C’est difficile en spectacle de faire synchroniser la voix et la guitare, c’est plutôt ardu. Et sur cet album, je disais Parasite. Elle est difficile et c’est la chanson la plus rapide que nous avons rédigée.
MU : Est-ce qu’il y a une chanson, de n’importe quel artiste, que tu aurais aimé créer ou participer à la création de cette chanson?
JM : Wow! C’est une bonne question! Je ne sais pas… Probablement n’importe quelle chanson de Metallica. Enter Sandman était un très gros succès, alors ce ne serait pas mal comme choix. (rires)
MU : Est-ce que tu veux dire quelques mots aux fans de Bullet For My Valentine de la province de Québec?
JM : Merci pour votre support depuis toutes ces années! Nous avons hâte de retourner en tournée et à un certain moment l’an prochain nous allons traverser pour venir jouer pour vous.

In early November 2021, Bullet For My Valentine released their 7th album, simply titled Bullet For My Valentine. Around the time of the release, our journalist Jonathan Gamache had the chance to interview bassist Jamie Matthias.
MU: First of all, I’d like to know why you decided to name your new album Bullet For My Valentine?
JM: That’s a good question! I think it was time for Bullet to have a self-titled album. It’s the band’s seventh record, and with this album, we’re making a statement about who we are. So, it makes a lot of sense to go with an eponymous album.
MU: This album is much closer to the band’s roots compared to the previous ones. Why go back to your roots?
JM: We didn’t sit down and say, “We need to make a heavier album than the previous ones.” That’s just where the band is at right now, you know? When we started creating the self-titled album, that’s what came out. We poured our hearts into it and made it as heavy as we could. It came naturally, and we’re really happy with the result.
MU: In the first few minutes of Parasite, there are several samples from previously released songs by the band. Where did that idea come from and how did you choose which clips to include?
JM: It was a brilliant idea, and it worked really well. It’s an original way to call back to the band’s biggest hits. It also serves as a great introduction to the album and creates a transition from our past hits to the new record.
MU: What feeling do you want people to have when listening to the new album?
JM: That’s really up to the listeners. Obviously, the album is very heavy, and I imagine if you’re in a bad mood, it’ll help you release that anger. We’re aware that the past two years — with COVID and everything that came with it — caused a lot of anger and frustration, and I think this album will speak to a lot of people.
MU: What were your sources of inspiration while creating this album?
JM: We just got together in a room and started jamming. Our influences mainly come from what we listened to when we were younger — bands like Machine Head, Metallica, and Slayer. Those bands will always influence us, and you can hear it in our songs.
MU: Four singles were released before the album dropped, and many said it might be the heaviest material Bullet For My Valentine has ever done. What’s your take on that?
JM: I agree. This is the heaviest album we’ve recorded to date — no doubt! I don’t know if we’ll go even heavier in the future, but we didn’t force anything this time. Again, it all came naturally.
MU: What’s your favorite song on the album?
JM: I’ve got a few, honestly. When we were touring the UK, we played the four singles and at that point, Shatter was my favorite. It’s a song that’s different from what people are used to from Bullet For My Valentine. Knives is also very good and fans really enjoy hearing it live.
MU: Are you planning on playing the album in its entirety?
JM: Maybe. We’d be up for it, and it could happen for a special occasion. That would be a cool idea.
MU: How important is the visual aspect of your live shows?
JM: It’s really important for us. For our current UK tour, we’ve got a big production setup with screens and everything. Our goal is to give the audience the best show possible. People pay to come see us live, and we want them to leave saying, “Oh my God! That was an amazing show! I’ll remember that for the rest of my life!” We want to give fans what they want.
MU: Is there a Bullet For My Valentine song that you can’t stand anymore?
JM: (Laughs) I don’t think so. When we tour for 18 months and play the same songs night after night, I might get tired of some of them. But since we haven’t toured for the last two years, there aren’t any right now. I’m happy to play all the songs we include in the setlist. That might change in 18 months though! (laughs)
MU: Did the pandemic impact the album?
JM: Yes. Of course, the creative process was different than for previous albums. The rules were changing from country to country. Where I live, the rules were different from where Math [Matthew Tuck, vocalist] or Jason [Jason Bowld, drummer] live, which limited the places we could meet and the number of people allowed in a room. It was different, but in a good way, because there wasn’t any pressure or deadlines to finish the album. We worked on it whenever we could, and it was ready when it was ready.
MU: Since you’re not a founding member of the band, what was the hardest song to learn and why?
JM: Hmm… I’d say Pretty On The Outside, from Fever. It’s not a complex song, but the vocals and the music in the chorus don’t really line up. It’s hard to sync the vocals with the guitar live — kind of tricky. And on this new album, I’d say Parasite. It’s tough and it’s the fastest song we’ve ever written.
MU: Is there a song, from any artist, that you wish you had written or been a part of?
JM: Wow! That’s a great question! I don’t know… Probably any Metallica song. Enter Sandman was such a massive hit, so that wouldn’t be a bad choice. (laughs)
MU: Do you have a few words for the Bullet For My Valentine fans in the province of Quebec?
JM: Thank you for your support over all these years! We can’t wait to get back on tour and we’ll definitely be coming your way sometime next year.
